Feb 4, 2016 - Many Happy Hours

February 3, 2016 Many Happy Hours Another sunny day here in Borrego, perfect for being outside. The first picture shows my view of Indian Head. Can you see him? (Hint: he's laying down). At 9:00 I played in the Don's Day event for an hour, then played a regular match with Susan, Margo and Julie. We played a couple of hours, had a lot of good points and it was really fun, but it was almost 1:00 pm when I got home and took an Ibuprofen. This old bod doesn't really like playing tennis two days in a row so Thursday will be a day off. Tonight...

Feb 3, 2016 - In the Swing of Things

February 2, 2016 In the Swing of Things My first full day here at Anza Borrego Tennis Center was a busy one. “Sheldon's Day” is every Tuesday and what that means is, a bunch of people show up to play doubles and Sheldon is the guy who is charge of saying who plays and who sits out. He manages to keep all four courts going and still play tennis himself. “Borrego” tennis means you play until one team wins six games and to make it faster, it's “no ad” scoring, which means if you tie the game at 40-40, the next point determines the winner. I...

Feb 2, 2016 - California!

February 2, 2016 California It's a cold morning here in the desert. My phone says 29 degrees, and that is pretty damn cold when you have to walk to the ladies room at 5:30 am. But I am happy to be here in Borrego Springs with the sun coming up and the coyotes howling and a cup of french press by my side. Life is good! The drive over from Yuma, AZ yesterday was a slow, white knuckle kind of deal. The weather apps all predicted the wind would subside as the day went on so to kill a couple of hours I drove into downtown Yuma to check it out. I...

Nov 27, 2015 - Catchup

This year I am going to try to keep up with my travels. LOL. I am in New Mexico at the moment, but could not start this year without showing you an amazing place that I visited at Thanksgiving last year. The town is Borrego Springs, and it is just west of the Salton Sea in the southern part of California. The WINS, my traveling group, celebrate Thanksgiving there every year, and I was able to bring my parents with me also. Now...Borrego Springs is not exactly a thriving metropolis (3500 pop.), but it has something that no other town in the...

Feb 8, 2015 - The Springs at Borrego

The Springs at Borrego is a very nice RV park, a bit pricey though. We paid $85 a night for pull through delux spot, 808. The spots in front of us had a view of the golf course. Cel signal was good, power was good and high water pressure. Lots of room between spaces. They do have weekly and monthly rates. Pool is nice, but kinda small for so many sites. Weather was warm, high about 86. Lots of nice people staying here. Got mail from post office and my badge and a check delivered by GSO. There is a small grocery store in town and a lot of...

Feb 5, 2015 - Arrived at Borrego Springs

We arrived at Clark Dry Lake boondocking area. We got a nice spot with a great view of the mountains. Motorhome was facing just right direction to give us morning sun and afternoon shade. The high was about 84 degrees and low about 54 degrees. We stayed 3 nights, water and black tanks held up. Gen ran about 2 hours a day. Verizon worked ok sometimes, but AT&T did not work at all. Closer to the main road, cel coverage was better, but more RVs around. We drove up Coyote Canyon, Rock House Canyon and then to Fonts Point. Fonts point was an...

Feb 21, 2014 - Anza Borrego Desert St. Pk., neat place

Friday, February 21, 2014 We’ve been keeping busy sitting in the desert in Anza Borrego Desert St. Pk. about 25 miles east of the Salton Sea. When we left Desert Hot Springs we moved about 65 miles to a boondocking spot (or as some people say “boondoggling”) in the center of the park near the town of Borrego Springs, CA. I had read some blogs describing the location and it wasn’t hard to find. We drove down the west side of the Salton Sea, which we had never driven down, about half way and hung a right. The road was ridiculously rough,...

Jan 29, 2014 - Back to birding!

So we must be feeling better. Yesterday we did 18 holes of golf, with a minimum of frustration and great enthusiasm, and this morning we were back to Hal's weekly birding outing, where right off the bat we saw a Common Snipe and an American Pipit, both unusual. Let the good times roll!

Jan 28, 2014 - Time Flies When ...

... you're having fun, right? In this case, the lack of recent blog entries has less to do with too much fun and more to do with getting hit with foot poisoning -- and it's taken us a week to recover. Yuck! Not sure how we got it -- perhaps fresh spinach from the market that was a little old by the time we used it. However, all happening under blue skies and 70°-plus weather, so the evil effects were minimized somewhat. And before that, the lack of blog entries was simply because we haven't had much to report. (Especially since the state of...

Jan 28, 2014 - Odds and sods photos

Just discovered a few never-before-dowloaded photos on my camera, and then a few others, so thought I'd post them. A mixed bag. A couple of weeks ago, before we got stricken, Ron and I were the only one on the weekly birdwalk with Hal. We didn't see a lot of birds that day, but we did see three American pipit on the golf course, which we'd never seen before. The last four photos are from that day.

Jan 13, 2014 - More birding

End of the first week in Borrego and what do we have to show for it? Well, we're getting into relax mode finally, so that's something. I'm sad to report the Golf Game is in a sorry state and no amount of whacking away on the driving range seems to be helping. So today we're going to just go ahead and play on the course. It's all about FUN, right! And exercise! And taking a nice walk! Whatever. We had a lovely walk yesterday morning at the Tamarisk Grove campground (part of the state park, just a few miles out of town) looking for birds,...
