Aug 9, 2012 - Monterey, CA

Today we are heading back to Monterey with our bikes. After lunch we took a nice bike ride along Monterey Bay. We stopped to watch the seals and sea otters playing in the Bay. It is hard to tell the sea otters from the seaweed because they are similar in color, then you see their heads bobbing and diving. Part of the trail goes through a grove of eucalyptus trees, the smell is overwhelming. After the ride we went to the Cannery, another shopping area in Monterey. It used to actually be where the fish was canned back in the early 1900’s, but...

Aug 8, 2012 - Big Sur, CA

Today we are driving down Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway. This highway skirts the Santa Lucia Mountains and is narrow and winding in many spots, but always the view of the Pacific Ocean. There are spots where it is so foggy you can’t see too much and then in a few miles it is completely clear. As the sun gets higher more of the fog burns off – the scenery is spectacular. There are a lot of turn-outs, but most are high above the ocean so there is really no beach access, just enjoying the vistas. Of course, there is the ever present...

Jun 14, 2012 - Waiting for the Jack

The See Ya jack problem has been a roller coaster. On Monday we were told that delivery from Elkhart could not happen for at least two weeks. I offered to pay for expedited delivery and Albert, from Bay Area RV, said that they would check into it. When I had not heard from them by Wednesday afternoon, I thought that we would not be able to get the repair done here and that meant probably not until December. But, on Wednesday afternoon Albert called and said that they had found a source and that the jack would be here THIS Thursday!...

Oct 19, 2011 - Big Sur

What a day!!! We arose to gray fog in Monterey this morning; but after breakfast in the hotel, packing the car, and a quick swing through Carmel, the sun came out in full force. And it remained out all day. So 5 miles outside of Carmel, we pulled off to the side of the road, repacked the trunk, and put the top down. In my judgment, there is no better way to experience Big Sur than in a convertible. We made the most of it. If there is anyone who doesn't know, Big Sur is a section of Highway #1 than runs for 109 miles down the rugged...

Aug 22, 2011 - Big Sur - and the elephant seals!

Well - on Monday we had to stop for the mundane - the car needed regular maintenance... It was actually a lovely pause - the day to day tends to be... We had checked out of the campground so we dropped the trailer in the dealership parking lot and gave them the car... We went back to the trailer with the dogs and read and napped and ate lunch and had a VERY nice time... All auto repair times should be so awesome:-) Then we hightailed it down the coast working to get to the Big Sur State Park for the night. We enjoyed the beautiful coast and...

Jul 7, 2011 - West Coast

Starting the day with sunrise near Malibu and Malibu beach, which is nice at this early morning time ;-) I hit the road to head up north, exploring the Californian West Coast during a long car trip on American highways and coast roads. This may seem exhausting, but driving here is surprisingly relaxing. First of all maximal speed limits are 65 mph (about 110 kmh), and nobody drives much faster (driving 5 to 10 miles above the speed limits is "constitutional";-), meaning all the traffic nearly goes the same speed (also the big trucks, and...

May 17, 2011 - Big Sur

We left Morro Bay and headed north on the 101. We were not able to take highway 1 as planned because of a major landslide. The road will be closed for a long time. We decided to take the 101 to G18 west. Because of this detour we had an opportunity to see a very remote mission. Mission San Antonio. This mission was the third in the chain, is really large and is well preserved and the church still in use to about 30 families. We learned that the state is requiring them to retrofit the old building or it will be closed. The need to raise...
