May 4, 2007 - Roaring Camp Railroad

Friday, May 4, 2007, we drove to the west coast of California near Santa Cruz. We drove over one mountain range but it was not too high or too steep. Then nearer to Santa Cruz we went through many vegetable fields, leaf lettuce and tomatoes were the ones we could identify as we drove along. The Cotillion Gardens RV Park where we had reservations was near the little town of Felton, which is just north of Santa Cruz. The GPS system, that I have relied a great deal, led me up a very narrow, windy and hilly road on the way to Felton. This road...

Oct 29, 2006 - Morgan Hill Campground

We are now in Morgan Hill Thousand Trails Preserve located in the heart of Paradise Valley, surrounded by the Santa Cruz Mountains. The road leading to the campground has wineries one after another, and real estate here is very expensive. The manager here at the campground told me that a house being built close by that the lot alone cost $1 millon dallars. The campground it's self is very beautiful with 320 sites water and electric only. Other amenities include adult lodge, tennis court, shuffleboard, horseshoes, and olympic size swimming...

Sep 25, 2006 - Day 1 - Morgan Hill to Anderson, CA

Well the day finally arrived! We pulled out of the driveway about 9:00 AM on Monday, September 25, 2006 - the first day of the second part of our lives. Had to make an immediate stop at the tire store as Rich had tweaked a valve stem when checking the tire pressure (2nd time that's happened) and we needed to get it replaced, then fuel in Gilroy, and a stop a Costco and by 10:30 we were heading over Pacheco Pass. Monday and Tuesday were to be true "travel" days on our way to Winchester Bay, OR. We really don't plan on having too many of...

Jul 20, 2006 - Moss Landing

Moss Landing is a small fishing village, with harbor, fresh fish market/restaurant and many antique shops. Prices in these shops were not bad and some "finds" will find their way back to AZ. The Moss Landing RV park is the cleanest and nicest we found so far--it has concrete pads, nice grass, landscaping between the pads, and nice picnic tables. Their wifi was down, so we are not getting our web site updated in a timely fashion. Will hopefully do better tomorrow!!

Jul 12, 2006 - Downtown Gilroy, Hwy 152 West to Mt. Madonna, and a fire in Patterson

Today we explored Gilroy's Highway 152 West which leads over the coastal Mountains to Watsonville and the ocean. We didn't go all the way to Watsonville, but did get up to Mount Madonna Inn which is no longer open. We used to love to eat up there, as the view from the back dining room was spectacular. It looked as though the fog was right up to the land, as you couldn't see the ocean. The view was still great though. We stopped on the way back at Bonfanti Gardens. It's a beautiful place. Here's a little about it. You've no doubt experienced...

Jul 1, 2006 - Going South a little ways

Just wanted to let you know that we're getting ready to move a little South of where we are now for the next couple of months. We'll be a little closer to major shopping and in a smaller park. We're prepping for a family get together next weekend, with lots of fun and maybe some photo's. Come back then and we should have some photo's.

Jun 26, 2006 - Santa Cruz

Not one to stay put for very long, I headed south to Santa Cruz and surrounding area. Marguerite told me about a place called "The Mystery Spot" and since it was just east of the city, I went there first. Off the interstate, I traveled a hilly, winding road full of redwoods. It was a nice diversion from desert and heat. Nature is playing around with our heads at this spot on the earth. It is an area about 150 feet in diameter in the redwood forest outside of Santa Cruz. Birds and animals don't come into that area but stand on the outskirts...

Jun 3, 2006 - We are in Morgan Hill

The drive into Morgan Hill from Paso Robles was pretty and quick. We were surprised to see so many vineyards almost continually growing down the coastal valley. They are harvesting lettuce, and planting lettuce, and are planting broccoli, which is a cool weather crop, so the coastal fog must help. We see the Cherry Stands are open, and will hit those now that we've dropped the trailer. We are looking forward to hitting one of our favorite Mexican places now that we're here for dinner tonight. After that I need to do some serious grocery...

May 14, 2006 - Heading for San Francisco

I hope all the women reading this had a very nice Mother's Day! Even though I wasn't with my children and grandchildren, I know that I had a good Mother's Day. Chet started off by giving me flowers yesterday (I forgot a vase so I used a cup to put them in), and then he took me to a Mexican restaurant tonight called Las Palmas where I was serenaded by some Mexican guitarists and received a rose from them. And I heard from all my children and grandchildren except Steve and Joshua (I heard Joshua in the background). Andrew, Nathan, Benjamin,...

Apr 24, 2006 - At Home in Sunnyvale!

Home at last. The flight was about 11 hours but I was able to sleep for quite a while (Business Class!) so it really wasn't too bad. Marie and Mom picked me up and my brother Bob and Jennifer, Stephanie and Christopher were waiting at home for me. It was good to get back. My old cat Oscar gave me the cold shoulder but Midnight came right up and started purring. I look forward to talking to everyone! Thanks for reading my journal!

Mar 29, 2006 - Our First Excursion Ends - Back to Scotts Valley for now

Well our travels have come to an end for now. Teresa and I are back home and enjoying a solid night sleep in our own bed. Dave's last day in Sydney was a profitable one netting him several hundred Aussie dollars playing poker at the Star City Casino. Now our focus will be in getting the house up for sale and moving to Las Vegas, finding an RV and planning the next edition of Trails and Tales, so stay tuned. We hope you enjoyed following along on our adventures. So until the next time: (Lyrics by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans) Happy trails to...

Mar 4, 2006 - Costanoa Lodge (just North of Santa Cruz)

Hello from the Coastanoa Resort, about 25 miles north of Santa Cruz, CA along Highway 1. We have just arrived and are thawing ourselves in the lodge. California has been a few degrees colder than the balmy summer of the Southern Hemisphere - especially in a tent... We left Los Angeles on Thursday. Sunny skies and a wonderful spring day greeted us in Ventura - a brief stop to change our vehicle (the first one didn't quite work out, so we upgraded at the first AVIS facility) and grab an "In'n-out-burger". We had our lunch near the Ventura...
