Dec 3, 2013 - A visit to Lincoln, CA

A visit to Lincoln, CA 12-3-13 We got up fairly early today because of a fitful night of sleep. We were going to juice then go on a long walk but then said, “To hell with that, let’s get breakfast!” We went to a place in Auburn called the “Edelweiss House of Omelettes” (Home of the Super Omelette). This is an old style café with good food, a friendly server, and we left…….stuffed. We got back in time to get a shower and be ready when Val arrived at noon to whisk us off to our next adventure. HR had her car, so she had to use Spence’s Toyota...

Dec 2, 2013 - Tours of Nevada City and Grass Valley, CA

Tours of Nevada City and Grass Valley, CA 12-2-13 The day got started at 11:00AM when Val, HR, and Phyl arrived in our campground. HR has to go into work so Val is taking Phyl, Julie and I for a tour of the old 1849 mining towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley. Val has lived in the area for years so she knows it well. First stop was Nevada City, a town established during the 1849 California Gold Rush. The older part of town has many of the older buildings nicely preserved. There are historic plaques and mining artifacts everywhere and those...

Dec 1, 2013 - Into the hills north of Lincoln, CA

Into the hills north of Lincoln, CA 12-1-13 Today was a juiceless day so we headed over to a place called “Sweetpeas Breakfast and Lunch” in Auburn, CA. We had breakfast and it was good, but not as good as Julie’s juice. After breakfast, we got coffee then went back to the RV to drink in the coffee and sunshine. Val came by at 11:30 to escort us up to the home of HR and Phyl in the hills near Camp Far West Reservoir north of Lincoln, CA. The drive is along very pretty backcountry lanes. These roads are also confusing and I wondered how in...

Nov 30, 2013 - Fresno to Auburn, CA

Fresno to Auburn, CA 11-30-13 Today was a 200 mile day so we didn’t need to leave super early. We had time to juice, get the RV ready to roll and on the road by 10:15AM. Weather was perfect with a bit of haze early in the day. We stopped once for gas and coffee in Livingston, CA and were back on the road by 12:30PM. We drove through Sacramento and into the hills to the town of Auburn arriving at 2:45PM. There were no problems at all. We found the campground which is called the Auburn Gold Country. The roads into the campground are a tight...

Aug 17, 2013 - Road Trip Bracket... Post Trip Reflections

This blog entry is being written by Phil Hermanson. I will be using first person instead of 3rd person writing style. I have received some indirect feedback that some people wished I had written in first person and shared more reflections and personal observations of our journey. I chose the 3rd person writing style for the blog as a way to make it a shared blog for both Murray and I. By the end of the trip, there were 135 e-mail notifications going out when I completed a blog entry.. and certainly many of those were Murray's friends and...

Jun 10, 2013 - 1 Week to go- Brewing Beer

Brewed my first batch of home brew beer. I received the equipment as a retirement gift from my family. I wonder where they got the idea that I might enjoy beer. My golf buddies took a day to travel to Nakahoma golf resort near Graeagle, Calif. About a 2.5 hour drive into the Sierras from home. We found a perfect day on a Thursday afternoon. We only saw 1 other foursome all day. So we were able to take our time, take photos, enjoy the scenery and relax. I bought my first car while in high school (1972).. a 1968 bug. I drove while in college,...

Sep 27, 2012 - Day 22 - 24

Winnemucca, NV - Auburn, CA Days 22 - 24 Today was another very nice day. We have been so blessed with great weather. Travel between Winnemucca and Reno is very desolate and boring. It is a mining stretch through Nevada. Lots of highway work between Reno and California. Last blog until Sunday night.

Jul 19, 2012 - Auburn, CA

It was time to leave Napa and continue heading east on I-80. We passed through Sacramento and about 30 miles later we were at our destination for one night in Auburn, CA. Auburn is at the base of gold rush country and has a HUGE statue of a miner panning for gold at the edge of Old Town. The shop buildings are very quaint and definitely look like they’ve been around for some time. We had a fun time window shopping and comparing things to the last time we were here. Auburn has definitely grown but the Old Town area looks the same. After...

Jun 16, 2012 - Family, friends & enemies

We've been enjoying the RV park's pool and Jacuzzi, visiting the Elks lodge for dinner, visiting a cousin & old friend, and battling an Oriole. There was a pesky yellow Oriole that constantly pecked at our back and side windows, and I mean constantly. From sunrise to sunset. We tied plastic grocery bags to the ladder and the window to flutter in the breeze and scare him away. It didn't work. He attracted another one that was orange, but he was more mellow, just stood on the ladder and admired his reflection. The yellow one however was a...

Apr 19, 2012 - Back Into California

This morning, we got to participate in something we rarely see: commute traffic. We left the Sparks Marina RV Park and headed west towards California. For the first five miles or so, the traffic was bumper to bumper but after we got through the interchange and past all of the downtown exits, it was smooth sailing. -- Our travels today took us over the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range on Interstate 80, aka Donner Pass. There was quite a bit of snow on the top of the pass but it kind of looked like melting vanilla ice cream. The contrast between...

Pretty Damn Nice!

May 14, 2011 - Auburn's Confluence: Training Hill and Forest Bridge Hill Hike

It was expected to rain/snow/hail in Northern California by the 14th midnight. A week before that, I posted a hike via NorCal Peak Hiker's group ( http://www.meetup.com/norcalpeakhikers ) to bag Castle Peak. The weather was iffy but as of this writing, the weather up the Tahoe region turned out to be nice. Auburn is the closest area where hikers can do the hike with modest elevation gain. This time I invited Liani and her husband. Liani's other half was not feeling well so it was just me and Liani. I had breakfast at Liani's El Dorado Hills...

Apr 27, 2010 - Pretty Gross You May Not Want to Read This

We are almost finished with our long list of things to do. Some we have just decided to postpone at this point. Time sure does seem to fly by. We have finished a few repairs on the trailer but we have one remaining issue to find a solution to: The Toilet. It continues to get plugged up. We were using our regular toilet paper (septic approved) but since there was an issue we spent the big bucks and bought Marina/RV toilet paper. We didn’t see a change. For those of you that have an RV I am sure you are shaking your head in agreement when I...
