Oct 22, 2012 - Day 2 at Devil's Den

Today we hiked the Yellow Rock trail at Devil's Den. This trail was a bit more strenuous, with a fair bit of elevation change. The topography had some similarities to the trail from yesterday, but was quite different. There were a couple of "destinations" on this hike. One was a neat little observation building, built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in 1934. The CCC was set up to create work at the end of the Depression. Projects such as the waterfall in Devil's Den were created by the US government so that people would have work....

Oct 21, 2012 - Welcome to Arkansas

We drove south from the Branson area into Arkansas, and traveled a scenic smaller road to Devil's Den State Park, in north-western Arkansas. A sign suggested that we follow the northern-most of the two exits, even though it was much longer on the side road. Turns out that other route had eight very sharp switchbacks...not sure we could have made it. Devil's Den is somewhat "famous" for its man-made lake and waterfall...but the water levels are so low this year that there was no water in the waterfall. It was a very nice park though, we had...

Apr 30, 2010 - Riding the Rails

We had stayed at the campsite an extra day so that we could take a train ride, which only ran on Fridays and Saturdays this time of the year. There were several school bus loads of students at the station, so we bought first-class tickets so that we weren't with the classes. We ended up in a nice parlour car with little tables and chairs, a free box lunch, and complimentary photos included in the higher price.
