Sep 9, 2017 - Riding the Rails

Sept 9, 2017 (Saturday) (Double click on picture to enlarge it) I had reservations on the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad for their scenic ride from Van Buren to Winslow and back. It was a nice trip however if I had taken the ride when the leaves had started changing it would have been better. There are a lot of trees along the route. I bet it is pretty with the leaves changing. There were a lot of pretty yellow flowers along the train tracks. They were covered with the monarch butterflies. I couldn’t get a picture of all the butterflies.

Sep 8, 2017 - Spending time in the cemetery

Sept 8, 2017 (Friday) (Double click on the pictures to enlarge them) I had several things lined up I wanted to see in Van Buren and Ft. Smith but got side tracked and didn’t do any of them. I love having the freedom to go with the flow and change plans. I started out by riding the trolley in downtown Van Buren. It was the only thing I did that I had planned to do. I was the only person on the trolley so the lady driving it went off the route and showed me areas she normally does not go too. She was giving me a history lesson all along the...

Just Tripping Along

Jul 9, 2016 - Park Ridge - Van Buren, AR

This morning, I pulled a tick off my ear and did battle with a 4' snake before leaving Tom Sawyer. After that, the rest of the day had to be easy. We drove from West Memphis, AR to Van Buren, AR. It was about 270 easy miles. We pulled into Park Ridge and had some dinner. Tomorrow we are off to Yukon, OK.

Dec 23, 2013 - Van Buren (Ft. Smith), AR

Got up at 5:15 a.m. this morning to say goodbye to Mike and Denise before they went to work. Said goodbye to the grand kids last night so they wouldn't have to get up so early. We got on the road at 6:00 a.m. and missed the morning rush. We saw several deer on the side of the road that had been hit by vehicles so we kept our speed down. We also saw a wolf crossing the road right in front of us and later saw another one that didn't make it. I didn't know they had wolves in Tennessee but these were way too big and furry to be coyotes or...

Oct 24, 2013 - Van Buren and Fort Smith

Day trip to Van Buren's old down town, started at their old train depot converted to Visitors center. The single street has a lot of vacant store fronts, but most retain their original architecture. Dropped into an artist gallery, what a surprise. Pottery from the Mayan era and Remington brass originals. We met the owner, Ralph Irwin, who has developed an interesting technique using rubber, cork, sand, and paint. He has large murals in hospitals, large banks, and capital buildings. The back of his card "If we meet and you forget me, you...

Oct 20, 2013 - Van Buren, AR - Overland RV Park

Well our trip from Newcastle, OK to Van Buren, AR didn't quite work out as planned. After putting in the slides and raising the jacks, the Mothership refused to start! After a couple of hours of calling the Freightliner trouble center and trying fix after fix, we wound up requiring a tow to the local Oklahoma City Freightliner center. So after about three hours of the tow truck operators working on the Mothership to get her ready and a 23 mile tow, they went to work on it but hadn't found the problem by closing time at 5:00 p.m., so we...

Away we go 2013

Sep 22, 2012 - Memphis and Beyond

Saturday, September 22, 2012 We are now in Ft. Smith, AR and about to enter Oklahoma on tomorrow, one of the few states we have not spent a night, but will do so tomorrow. (This is also because we can now put the Oklahoma state on our map). We have traveled a little over 2,000 miles since leaving Maine and still have another 1,000 to go. Friday started rainy, but cleared as we headed to down town Memphis. Our first stop was Sun Records Studio, Elvis’s first recording studio, and other notables, like Ike Turner, BB King, Johnny Cash, Carl...

Apr 30, 2010 - Van Buren, AR

Friday, we're at the Comfort in, it's 9:45 and we just got a call from the repair shop - the problem seems to be with the fuel pump which they have to order fom the Cummings home office with possible delivery tomorrow but more likely on Monday. So we'll leave the RV here and head up to Springdale in the Saturn and hang out until Monday. Yesterday, in between visits with the patient, we walked around Van Buren's Historic Downtown area which was booming in the 1900's era. Paddlewheel boats plied the Arkansas River and this was one of their...

Apr 29, 2010 - Whoops!

After a night at the CB (Cracker Barrel) campground in Russellville, AR we ate a light breakfast and got back on I-40W. About halfway (35 mies) to our turn off on I-540N we developed a little skip in the engine which would go away and then do it again. It got a little worse each time and finally the "check engine" warning light would go on and off. I got out the Cumming engine handbook and Susan called the 800 number. She described the symptoms and our location and whoever she talked to was very sympathetic. He connected us with the...

May 12, 2009 - Revisiting Arkansas

We took a backway from Tunica, up 49, hoping to find a better road than 40 but failed. We were curious about our old neighborhood, from '96-98; some may remember that the home inspector for a potential buyer for the house we owned said it might fall down the hilltop. We didn't stop to check if the address had changed. Decided to spend the night here in Van Buren, near Ft. Smith at the Arkansas border.
