Oct 25, 2017 - Memphis and area/Marion, Arkansas

Yesterday was a travel day from Nashville Shores to the Memphis KOA that is located in Marion, Arkansas. We are mainly travelling along highway I-40 West and we made a few stops. The first was Buffalo where we drove on Loretta Lynn Parkway. Next was Brownsville where the information centre is one big museum. We got a lesson on the cotton industry and the many musicians that come from the area. The school house that Tina Turner went to was moved to the property. There is all kinds of memorabilia including a TV screen with one of her...

May 10, 2013 - Memphis. TN

Last night in camp we met Neal who had 4 cockatoo parrots. He and his wife were driving from their second home in AZ to Fire Island, NY. We had breakfast with Neal at the Camp Café and learned a lot more about cockatoos and Fire Island. Did not know that cockatoos can live for 60 years which promotes tight knit rescue organizations in which most owners are active participants. The birds were very personable. Fire Island, population 491, is adjacent to the south shore of Long Island and a National Seashore. The island is made up of quiet...

May 9, 2013 - St. Louis to Marion, AK

Today was a travel day and we have travelled in 4 states. We camped in IL last night, drove around St. Louis on the Illinois side back into MO (Hwy 55) to avoid East St. Louis which Bob says is horrific based on his basketball days experience, south through AK and into TN. We are actually camped in Marion, AK for the next two days which is about 14 miles from Memphis. We were in/out of rain all day but heavy wind was with us all day. Bob is a pro driving in it but I still gasp periodically. We stopped in Cape Girardeau ( a BIG town in...

Oct 17, 2012 - Day 110

This morning we said our good-bye's to Marge and Branson. Marge is staying in Branson for a few more days before heading back to Pennsylvania. We, on the other hand, headed south out of Branson into Arkansas to Conway, AR and then proceeded east to the Memphis KOA in Marion, AR. The weather was overcast for the better part of the day. We arrived around 6 pm and got the coach set up. About 8 pm, the campground personnel knocked on the door to inform us that we were in a tornado warning and to proceed to the office rest room areas for...

Aug 16, 2012 - On the road again

Before leaving Hot Springs, we went for dinner at Fisherman’s Wharf which overlooks Lake Catherine. We sat on the deck as the weather has cooled down a little. I haven’t eaten catfish for more than 30 years because the last time I had it (Minnesota) it tasted like dirt. I figured it was time to try it again since we are in catfish country so I ordered blackened catfish. Glad it was blackened because it still tastes like dirt. It may be another 30 years before I order it again. We hit the road this morning and are headed for Kentucky. We...

Feb 5, 2012 - I'm looking at the world through a windshield...

Feb 5, 2012 I'm looking at the world through a windshield... Marion, Arkansas, United States One of my favorite songs by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. I can really relate to that song after 2 days and 900 some miles. Left Elk River on Sat (2/5) about 9:00 am. That's very early for us! We were worried about the big snow storm that dumped 22" on Denver. Sis=in=law even called and asked if we really wanted to traverse Iowa in a snowstorm. I'm impatient so we went anyway. We used all of our high-tech gadgets to plot our way. Went...

Oct 22, 2010 - Spell Fantastic Dinner With A Capital "B"

First stop for the day was "Cliff's Auto & Tractor Parts" in Marion, Arkansas, to pick up the stuff I needed to complete the repairs to the trailer. if you have seen any of these places on TV you can imagine what it was like, six or seven good ole boys sitting around in rockers, chewing tabaki and drinking coffee, solving all the problems of the world, darn near felt like pullin' me up a chair! Anyway the had all the items I needed and within an hour I was back at the trailer with the job hopefully done, at least until we get home and i can...

Oct 21, 2010 - Made it To Memphis

We said goodbye to Nashville around 10:00 AM and hit I-40 headed southwest for Memphis, roughly 380 KM's and around 4 hours. The drive over was all freeway and therefore went very smoothly with no hangups or wrong turns at all. Being that the Memphis KOA is actually in Marion, Arkansas, we drove across the Mississippi River for the very first time ever. Another first on the trip over was seeing cotton growing in the fields. We arrived at the camp right around 2:00 and after unhooking we headed over to grab some groceries. returning to camp...

Apr 26, 2010 - Our next stop

Made a 240 mile trip to Marion, AR where we stayed at the KOA for two days April 26 & 27. Weather was much better but there were some stretches of road that were rough. For the most part, roads in the south have been pretty good but there are stretches of concrete roads that were pretty rough. I did notice that there were a number of signs indicating that the highways had either been renewed or planned for updating through funds from the Stimulus. These projects surely created jobs directly as well as indirectly to those supplying supplies...

Apr 22, 2010 - Marion, AR

*Thursday April 22, 2010* We stayed at Rend Lake due to the wonderful weather, leaving today and making a stop at Marion, AR just west of Memphis. *Saturday April 24, 2010* We have had thunderstorms and tornado watches here at Marion, AR. We were lucky and got three nights for the price of two, so we are staying through Saturday night. With the bad weather forecast, we did not get a chance to go into Memphis to see Elvis, the local weather stations here said to stay put, so we did. We are planning to move on to Sallisaw, OK tomorrow for at...
