Mar 2, 2019 - Loud Friday and slow Saturday

I slept in until about 7:00 on Friday. I am beginning to be able to stay in bed later that the 5:30 I was accustomed to for all those years. But it was only 10 minutes premature to what would have been my wake up call. The Marine Corps Air Station went into full gear about 7:10. I heard jet engines for jets of all sizes roaring until just after 7:25. Now is the time for all of you readers to remember that the MCAS is 4 miles away from our resort. The jets were loud...damn loud. So now that I was wide awake I decided to have breakfast prior...

Mar 1, 2019 - Date Farm Tour

Took a tour of a working Date Farm with my Montana friends Chuck & Patti Renevier. WOW, what a learning experience. The process of raising, caring & harvesting Dates is very LABOR intensive. End of the tour was topped of with a Date Shake, YES, as in milk shake. Highly recommend this habit forming desert. Martha’s Gardens Medjool Date Farm was founded in 1990 by Nels Rogers and his wife Martha. The farm originated on a parcel of desert land on the Yuma Mesa overlooking Yuma’s beautiful Gila Valley, located 10 miles east of downtown...

Feb 28, 2019 - End of February and the Arizona weather has arrived ! !

The end of February and I was told yesterday the locals say this has been the coldest winter in 20 years. BUT...cold is relative. Back home they have had snow and freezing rain and so much rain they are growing webbed feet. Some of our neighbors are talking with their families (mostly in Canada) and are talking temperatures in the minus 40 range. So our cold days of upper 50's is not too bad. But starting on Monday of this week, Arizona weather has arrived and the forecast is great. Wednesday was to have been a trip with our friends from...

Feb 26, 2019 - The weather is better

Sunday was a pretty day and warmer still. The winds were down from the last few days. We visited here in the park with a few folks and drove and walked around to look at possible sites for us to return next winter. We have really enjoyed our time here and are sure this is where we would like to spend at least another winter here in Yuma. We then went late to the Yuma Swap Meet. I have included a few pictures of the thoroughfares and how crowded they were and some of the variety of items. It is something we will have to go to again and...

Feb 25, 2019 - We did it !! Telegraph Pass Trail

Telegraph Pass Trail is a 5.3 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Yuma, Arizona that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. Elevation gain 1404 ft We said we would be back and today we did it.It took us 2 hours to reach the top.It was a very tough steep climb but we were rewarded with beautiful views to the west viewing Yuma and beyond, and to the East towards Welton and Casa Grande. The return trip took us a bit longer because we choose the wrong fork coming down adding about another 1/2 hour. Tired and...

Feb 23, 2019 - Mexico and then sunshine

Friday started early for us. We were up and going around 6:30 a.m. (for Bub) Our goal was to leave for Los Algodones by 8:00. We got around quickly. I left with Ziva a little after 7:30. This is a little earlier than most days and as I had expected, no other dogs were in the Dog Park. After about 10 wasted minutes another dog came through. Kiza is about a 100 lb Rottweiler. As friendly as can be and almost ignores the other dogs. She was in and out in three minutes with all her business finished. Ziva took that as a hint to go take care of...

Feb 21, 2019 - Not much going on...

Well, if I had to describe the weather the past several days is Yuk! ! Whether it has been wind, cool or rain, it can best be described as Yuk. Sunday was windy and cool so we just settled in and watched the PGA golf tournament in Los Angeles. We started with the early morning coverage and stayed to the very end. It was most interesting to see the pros play like amateurs in the late going, be it weather or fatigue but they played less than their best. Monday was a golf day in Wellton and I was gone from 10:00 until about 4:30. Sue took...

Feb 19, 2019 - USS Midway

USS Midway (CVB/CVA/CV-41) aircraft carrier was commissioned a week after the end of World War II. Named after the climatic Battle of Midway of June 1942, Midway was built in only 17 months. Midway was the largest ship in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. She operated for 47 years, during which time she saw action in the Vietnam War and served as the Persian Gulf flagship in 1991's Operation Desert Storm. USS Midway was the United States' second longest-serving aircraft...

Feb 18, 2019 - Yuma AZ, An update from the desert

Here we are in the middle(ish) of February already, seems hard to believe that a month has passed since our last journal entry. ** We made it over to the Howling at The Moon gathering in the foothills back on January 20th. There was quite a large gathering of people and the live band that played was excellent. The weather did not cooperate as it was cloudy, and we only caught a short glimpse of the moon as it came up over the mountains. However, the next morning, the sky was clear and we had a good view of the full moon as it was setting in...

Feb 16, 2019 - Three good days...

Thursday it was raining. Not like back home but rain none the less. I think the forecast was for us to get less than 1/2 inch. But, it took it all day to do so. It started clearing about 4:30 or so. When I took Ziva to the Dog Park Thursday morning even the dogs did not want to get out from under the tree. All four dogs stayed under the tree with all of us parents instead of getting out and running around like they do normally. So Thursday was a stay in the Bus and watch a little television. I even managed to get Ziva off the sofa and I...
