Sep 18, 2012 - Potpourri

It's our last day at Glen Canyon and Wahweap. We decided to leave the cameras in their cases and just enjoy the beautiful weather. So even though we don't have any pictures we'd like to share a few thoughts on this area. There are around 120 campsites here at Wahweap (it's full, too) and nearly half are occupied by rental class "C" motorhomes from the Big Four: CruiseAmerica, Camping World, El Monte and RoadBearRV. And most of them are rented by Europeans on holiday here in the American Southwest. We can tell where they're from by the...

Sep 16, 2012 - Dam tour

After a morning of doing nothing, and enjoying every minute of it, we jaunted down to the visitor center at Glen Canyon dam and signed up for a tour of the "bowels" of this monumental concrete dike. Once past the same rigorous security inspection as an airport we were escorted to an elevator and sent down about 100 ft to the top of the dam. There we were shown exhibits pertaining to the construction of the dam and associated hydroelectric generators, including this recently removed turbine wheel. Glen Canyon was not constructed to...

Sep 15, 2012 - Lake Powell/Glen Canyon NRA

Saturday's drive from Monument Valley to Page, AZ was a short three hours but what changes in scenery. We went from red rock mountains to a desert landscape with pinion pines and sagebrush. We travelled mostly along a mesa top until we reached the Colorado River canyon at Page. Then it was a 2000 ft drop to the Glen Canyon dam site. Glen Canyon dam is the second largest BLM dam in the US, just 16 ft shorter than Hoover Dam. The lake behind it, named for explorer John Wesley Powell, is also the second largest man made lake in North...

May 18, 2012 - G.R.I.T. Trip 3-2012

The past 5 days we spent on Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on the National Park Service houseboat TRUE GRIT. We left from Antelope Point Marina and beached/anchored in Gunsite Bay. By the end of the week this trip had cleaned over 1,000 square feet of graffiti off the rocks and canyon walls and picked up over 100 pounds of trash.

Our Travels in 2012

May 11, 2012 - Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

We are back in Page. Our second graffiti trip was cancelled so that the houseboat could be hauled out of the water and newer (relatively new = used) main engines could be installed. So we headed back to the Wahweap ramp to meet the truck. They hauled her out of the water and drove into the town of Page. The good folks at Bulldog Marine did the engine change out for the National Park Service and had her back in the water in no time. The newer engines are lighter with better fuel economy, they are newer so parts will be easier to find, so a...

Our Travels in 2012

Oct 2, 2010 - Wahweap, AZ

Saturday through Monday, October 2-4 Lake Powell (near Page, Arizona) As we left Moab pulling the trailer we passed ‘Hole in the Wall’ – we couldn’t stop as the turn was too sharp for the rig. It looked like an intriguing place and on our next visit we’ll check it out. Probably just another tourist trap but who can resist a store in a cave? When you drive through Monument Valley you understand why so many Westerns have been filmed here! We stopped at a Navajo roadside stand; Scott took photos of the monuments all around us as he walked...

Jul 12, 2010 - Lake Powell

We drove 190 miles from the Grand Canyon to Wahweap Camprgound on Lake Powell. Temps went from 72 to 92 as went climbed downoff that nice high desert plateau into some real desert. The lake is a brilliant blue and the scenery is surreal. Buttes, Mesas, and Canyons galore. Glaringly harsh and hot. We finally launched the canoe and did some fishing... (caught nothing worth a picture), took a boat tour of the lake and up into Antelope Canyon and a short hike into the surrounding area to see some "toadstools." (a rock formation which has a...
