Aug 10, 2018 - Arizona, Part 6

In 1540, Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado led an expedition from Mexico up the San Padro River valley into present-day Arizona in search of riches. If he tried following the same route today he would have found his path blocked by a border fence. Perhaps if Native Americans had erected a barrier nearly 480 years ago to stop Coronado then the U.S. southwest would still be Indian territory and the centuries of persecution and killings inflected on Native Americans by first the Spanish and later Americans would never have...

Apr 10, 2018 - Roses and Cowboys. Part 2

“The Town Too Tough To Die” that’s what they call Tombstone. The town has done a very good job of keeping it authentic as possible. The history is incredible; the O.K Corral, Boot Hill, Bird Cage Theatre, Big Nose Kate’s Saloon and many more! By the way, Kate did not have a big nose... she was allegedly the nosiest person in town! The highlight was the re-enactment of the gunfight at O.K. Corral. It was kind of campy but still fun to see. The guns were loud! Janice loved having her picture taken with the “Earps & Doc Holliday”. The tall...

Apr 10, 2018 - Roses and Cowboys. Part 1

Roses in Tombstone!!!???? We were watching the CBS Sunday Morning Show two or three months ago and they did a story about the largest rose bush/tree in the world. It was interesting, we enjoyed it and pretty much forgot about it. We arrived in Tombstone and while our B&B host was going over the history and highlights of the town he mentioned we need to be sure we see the largest rose tree in the world. We look at each other and... “Is that here”!!?? So we went to see it. It was amazing. The pictures hopefully do it justice. This plant is...

It was a very cold today with the wind blowing out of the southwest. If you were in the sun with the wind being blocked it was nice, but the minute you got in the shade with the wind it was cold. We did walk downtown so Candy could exchange a shirt she bought that was too small for anyone. That was it for the day so we just got ready to leave Tombstone in the morning. We will start to head north but keep watching the weather. We plan to stay in Phoenix for a week before going to Williams Arizona, if the weather stays good.

2018 Winter

Feb 18, 2018 - Sunday, Tombstone AZ

I think I am starting to understand why we enjoy our visits to Tombstone. This is a place that is out of the main stream of the everyday grind of life. We come here with people from all over the world but there are not the world problems. You don’t hear conversations about the events going on everywhere else, just people enjoying walking in the past with all the people living in the 1800’s laughing and having pictures taken with the reenactors of the past. There is so much to learn about the history of our country as the west was settled by...

Feb 17, 2018 - Saturday, Tombstone AZ

Today was the first day of Vigilante Days in Tombstone. The normal shows still go on but the group Tombstone Vigilantes put on street shows from 10 am to 4 pm. Quite a crowd shows up in town for this event from all over the country, even some people from England were here. They have a raffle for a Rossi Model 92 .45 Cal. Rifle, I didn’t win. They have gunfights, era fashion shows, and singing. This is a big thing around here. The group collects donations that help all the charities in Tombstone, all money goes to charity, none for the...

2018 Winter

Feb 15, 2018 - Thursday, Tombstone AZ

It rained all night and now it is raining for most of the day. Rain is what all the local folks want and need. They tell me it very seldom rains during the winter but come June and July it is monsoon season around here. I rains so hard at that time the roads wash out and people sometimes are trapped in their area. You can see driving around the areas that wash out because the wash has new road, it is a river then but dried up now. We will just stay here at the motorhome for the day and relax.

2018 Winter

Feb 14, 2018 - Wednesday, Tombstone AZ

We needed to move our site today so they could have our pull thru for some of the big 5th wheeler that are coming in for the weekend. We got a better site since is elevated and out of the way of all the incoming traffic, kind of glad we moved. Candy drove over to Sierra Vista to get her prescription filled at the local Frey’s, Kroger. Kind of a good way to do, doctor calls into the Kroger at home and it is in their system so Frey’s can pick it up in their system. I didn’t go so she could do some shopping without me in her way. This is kind...

2018 Winter

Feb 13, 2018 - Tuesday, Tombstone AZ

Another day of leisure here in the 70 degree weather and clear skies. We did walk downtown and had lunch at Longhorn Saloon. Nothing special for food, not sure what I was looking for but it didn’t hit the spot at all. Hopefully we will hit the Café Margarita Mexican restaurant before we leave. We did stop at Big Nose Kate’s to have lunch but that didn’t work out. We got inside and a sign said to wait to be seated, which we did. Everyone just looked at us for the next 10 minutes, there were several empty tables but maybe they didn’t like my...

Feb 12, 2018 - Monday, Tombstone AZ

We needed to wait around so the Mobile RV Repair could come by and fix our hot water tank. The light in the switch to let us know the tank was on propane burnt out, so we went and purchased a new one. I put it back in and now nothing on the monitor panel works. I had screwed up the wiring so we called this mobile repair company. He let us know he would be here today but it could be a few hours before he could get here, so we wait. He showed up around 1 pm and got the wiring fixed so now the propane for the tank works along with the other...

Feb 11, 2018 - Sunday, Tombstone AZ

We took it easy this morning because there will be a doings this afternoon in downtown Tombstone. The Tombstone Vigilante’s will put on a show between noon and 3 pm today. Got some interesting pictures of a 1919 Nash and one of the first Motorhomes from the 1800’s. Also the police here are Tombstone Marshals, not just policeman. This keeps with theme of the town.

2018 Winter

Feb 9, 2018 - Friday, Tombstone AZ

Today was shopping day so we drove over to Huachuca City to the local RV dealer and parts store. I needed a switch for the motorhome and we just wanted to check the place out. We left there and continued on to Sierra Vista to Target for some stuff and Frey’s to fill prescription. We stopped at Culver’s for lunch and had a lengthy conversation with another couple that were in the process of moving from Florida to Sierra Vista. They bought a house and were moving in. Didn’t like Florida because of all the old people, we were the same age but...
