Jun 30, 2012 - Day 9- K-town, Az to Yuma, Az

Originally we were scheduled to be in K-town until tomorrow…….but most the rest of the group was leaving today…..and there really wasn’t going to be any projects going on, so we decided to head for grandpa’s house (Clint was dying to get there when we left Illinois last Friday……and somehow has patiently survived the week). Danny and Doris (the Hopi couple we met) invited us to spend the day with them at Flagstaff at a Hopi celebration……which would have been interesting, but since we only make it to Arizona once a year, I thought it would be...

Jun 29, 2012 - Day 8- K-town, AZ

Our day of work on the reservation. Linda and the kids stayed at the school and helped one of the teachers finish setting up the school……I went back up to the church to help paint the inside. Late in the week someone thought it would be good to paint the interior…….so we started yesterday and finished up today. It isn’t a huge church…….but the ceilings are very tall, so I made a lot of trips up the 10’ ladder to trim around lights and around the edge. We sat tables on the pews so they could reach the ceiling with poles to paint. A group of...

Jun 28, 2012 - Day 7- K-town, AZ

The large group from West Virginia was touring the Southwest today, so Linda and the kids spent the morning helping the maintenance group put classrooms back together. I went up to the church and finished the electrical work, finished the swamp cooler install and worked on some of the plaster problems in the church. After lunch, the whole family went back up to church to work. We took Ron’s truck up there because the excavator needed to be brought back and taken back to Flagstaff.......Ron was still in Winslow for today’s parts run…..and I...

Jun 27, 2012 - Day 6- K-town, AZ

Turns out there is something even more scarce than water on the reservation…….the internet. Most of the time there is absolutely no Verizon signal….but every now and again I’ll walk through a patch of internet, and get texts, voicemail and email….but then it quickly disappears before I can reply. Used to be able to go to the internet café, (bench on the playground close enough to the school I could get on their wireless)…..but yesterday a group was cleaning out the computer lab….and thought empty the lab literally meant empty….so they...

Jun 26, 2012 - Day 5- K-town, AZ

The 4:30 sunrise is odd…..but since it is really 6:30 our time I don’t mind…..I’m up….reading and I can watch the sun come up over the desert. Usually I’m watching from inside because I didn’t pack a lot of clothes for the mid-forties wake up temperature. I went back to the church and worked on wiring…..Linda and the kids stayed at the school and painted. They must be working hard because when I come back from lunch, their covered in paint and there were a couple different people from the West Virginia group that commented to me on how much...

Jun 25, 2012 - Day 4- Kykotsmovi Village, AZ (K-town, Az)

Interesting start to the day. Apparently the Hopi reservation does not recognize daylight savings time, but he Navaho nation, which entirely surrounds the Hopi reservation does. So we all got up….got around….were ready to go….only to find out we were an hour ahead of the Hopi time zone. There is absolutely no Verizon coverage in the village…but every now and again, I get a stray email or text. The “internet café” is a bench on the playground at the school…..that you can pick up the wireless from……so since I had some time to kill, I headed...
