Jul 3, 2018 - Jacob Lake AZ

Jacob Lake Day 38—Tuesday July 3, 2018 We departed Willowwind RV Park in Hurricane Utah at 10:40 (Mountain Daylight Time). Our destination was DeMotte Campground in the Kaibab National Forest which is located near the entry to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, a trip of 133 miles. We prefer the North Rim; it is higher, cooler and is forested. There is more to see with side canyons, ridges and rocky outcrops. DeMotte CG is located 18 miles from the North Rim Visitor Center. When we last visited the Grand Canyon North Rim in 2009...

Jun 13, 2016 - Coyote Buttes White Pocket

These pics are of South Coyote Buttes - White Pocket. The area of White Pocket on the Paria Plateau in Northern Arizona is very impressive indeed! While many are lured and wait their turn to visit the infamous "Wave" in the North Coyote Buttes, the "White Pocket" area to the east is seldom visited. Maybe because of its remoteness or the requirement of 4WD to access the area. The drive to the swirling, twisted, multicolored natural artwork is an adventure in its own right, and the exploration by foot is endless. The White Pocket is an...

Jun 13, 2016 - Coyote Buttes Cottonwood Cove

South Coyote Buttes in the Paria Canyon Wilderness is a vast expanse of colorful slickrock sandstone with lots of sand in between. The stone has been eroded by wind and water over Eons into a myriad of forms. The minerals seeping and collecting along concentration gradients give the rock it’s sharply defined colored layers often packed within millimeters of each other. Wander and scramble in search of the best angles amongst the vibrant striations, weird hoodoos and buttes, balancing rocks, Moqui marbles, beehives, swirls, teepees, delicate...

Sep 5, 2015 - Grand Canyon - North Rim

September 5, 2015 GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK NORTH RIM Today we toured the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This was a very different experience for us than the South Rim. Solitude, awe-inspiring, of course, a slower pace, and the feeling of going back in time. Grand Canyon’s North Rim is very close to the Utah Border and requires more to visit than the South Rim. It’s more remote and less visitors make it to the North side. It’s further away from any freeways, it’s only open seasonally from May through October and there is no airport...

Jun 3, 2015 - Overgaard, AZ. to Jacob Lake, AZ

We have been at our cabin for a week or so getting prepared for this summers trip. We will only be on the road for the month of June. If you saw all the commercials this winter/spring for the National Parks in Utah, you will know where we are heading. Diana is having surgery in July for a knee replacement so this trip will be short. We hope to get back on the road later this year with either a RV trip to the South (Florida or the Keys) or maybe a bigger trip to Europe (Not in the RV). Nothing is for sure at this moment. Our old gal Sugar...

Oct 6, 2014 - A Well Deserved Beautiful Day

The drive from Flagstaff to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon was a dream. After being so concerned about the problems with Otto, driving him up the mountains with no problems and little decrease in speed was an awesome feeling. We said that whenever we see a motorhome poking its way up a hill from now on, we will tell them to head to the service center and get their filters checked. What a difference! The most popular spot to view the Grand Canyon is the south rim which is only about 60 miles from Flagstaff. But we had been to the south...

Sep 30, 2014 - Jacob Lake AZ– Kaibab National Forest Dispersed Camping

Here we are 4 miles from the entrance to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We are camping at 9,000 feet, so it’s a bit chilly at night. As a matter of fact, it got so cold last night that one of our propane tanks froze up on us. Luckily, we had another, full tank, so Rog was able to get us heat in the morning. It is really pretty here. The leaves are beginning to change colors and the green, yellow and red leaves are really vibrant. Took a day to go explore the north rim. We drove out to Point Imperial, which at 8,803 feet is the highest...

Sep 26, 2014 - North Rim of the Grand Canyon

The drive to the North Rim took us across a flat plain at 3210 feet with beautiful Vermilion cliffs on our right. We found out later that it is from a point on these cliffs that the condors born in captivity are launched when they are old enough to go to the wild. Passing the cliffs we turned left and started to climb. The North Rim average altitude is 8500 feet. In the Kaibab National Forest's North Ranger District just prior to reaching the boundary of the North Rim we passed a large burned area. In the summer of 2006 lightning started a...

Aug 3, 2014 - At Jacob Lake, Arizona

We left Alamo and just down the road was a favorite spot from our 2013 spring trip – Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge. It is a major point along the bird migrations in the spring and fall but has much of interest the rest of the year. The whole Pahranagat Valley just south of the Extraterrestrial Highway is very interesting in that it is verdant green with many ranches along the valley and includes a large lake at the center of the valley, which is the refuge. We saw several Great Blue Herons, some hawks and a bunch of vultures along...

Jun 24, 2014 - Grand Canyon, North Rim

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is every bit as spectacular as the more popular South Rim and is much less crowded. The canyon is relatively dry right now, but the peaks and plateaus are as gorgeous as ever. We had lunch at the Canyon Lodge. Weather: High, 99 Low, 70 Campground: Kaibab Camper Village, Jacob Lake, Arizona
