Apr 27, 2013 - Grand Canyon, South Rim

April 26-29, 2013 – Grand Canyon, South Rim Last night, stayed in Gallup, NM at the USA RV Park, a nice place, generally although, Gallup itself, is not a particularly attractive place. Drove to Flagstaff, Arizona and took US Rt. 180 north through the Coconino Wilderness, past Humphreys Peak (tallest in Arizona at over 12,000 ft.) and into the Lodgepole pine forests. Word to the wise or anyone else driving a RV – Do Not Go Through Flagstaff with the RV to get to Rt. 180! The right hand turn in the center of town onto Rt. 180 required a...

Nov 4, 2012 - Grand Canyon - South Rim

South Rim of the Grand Canyon – The east road leading to the Grand Canyon is no short trip. It does get very pretty after entering the park. Lots of areas to pull over and enjoy the view. There is only one campground open that can handle RV’s over 30 feet and that is Trailer Village. So far I haven’t made many reservations, just show up and get a space in the off season. What made this part of the trip extra special was that my friend Bob came down with his trailer from Oregon. We did a little hiking and biking and it was nice to share the...

Oct 2, 2012 - The Grandest Canyon

Grand. I suppose that single word is most descriptive of the adjectives one could use to describe this canyon and you just can't take enough pictures to capture the majestic views you encounter as you walk along the canyon rim. The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular national parks in the Southwest region, drawing over five million visitors a year. At times during the three days we were here it felt as if a million were here at once. The National Park Service is doing the best they can to provide for a wonderful visit for all who come...

Sep 30, 2012 - Across the Colorado

Another roller coaster day of driving, from 8300 ft to 3536 ft then back to 7000 ft here at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Nearly four hours of driving to get just a few miles across the Colorado River canyon. We paused at Marble Canyon and the Navajo Bridge for a little leg stretching. Navajo bridges (the old one is a pedestrian bridge) stretch about 800 feet in length and nearly 500 feet above the river. We arrived at Mather Campground in Canyon Village, ate lunch, then went (naturally) to the visitor center. it's not our first trip...

Apr 6, 2012 - Grand Canyon

Arizona offers a lot more than just Deserts. Flagstaff reminds me of Colville. High in elevation the weather is also lower. We arrived at the Grand Canyon before sunset, and was able to see many viewpoints, using their free shuttle. Wind was cold but sites were fantastic! Off to Utah tomorrow!

Oct 22, 2011 - South Rim Grand Canyon

We drove up to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, we had not been there is many years, lots of improvements in the Village, we walked around the rim, visited several shops, ate lunch at the El Tovar (the most lovely hotel of the National Parks, it was built by Fred Harvey and was one of his many Harvey Houses staffed with his Harvey Girls. We had a wonderful time. The canyon was really beautiful in all the various lighting conditions.

May 26, 2011 - Hiking a little, visiting exhibits

Biked the west trail of the South Rim at 5:30 AM because they say the best photo opps are early in the morning. Very windy today but sunny. I forgot to charge up the cameras last night so when I went to use the video it was dead. Aaaaaggg. Fortunately I had the still camera and took about 10 before that camera petered out. Got some great shots of the Colorado River and grade 8 rapids. I'll post some video tonight. There is a great general store, bank and post office across from the campground. The store is huge and they carry a fully line...

May 25, 2011 - Visiting viewpoints west of the village - Hopi,Hermit Trailhead

37degrees this AM, but deep blue sky, sunny and 70 today. Another great day to tour. Yesterday met a couple of guys who hiked to the base of the canyon which is 5,000 feet, camped a couple days then hiked back up. They left at 3:30am and arrived at 2:30pm. Their comment - never do it again! There is actually a store down there and a bar. Also a lot warmer, bordering on hot vs. up here. We can't use the generator until 8:00am and guess what, we forgot to bring a non electric coffee maker. Seems like 8:00 never arrives. The day warmed up...

May 24, 2011 - Hiked the South Rim of the Grand Canyon

After a chilly 42 degree morning, we set out to walk the South Rim Canyon about a 1/2 mie from the campground. I ran the rim for 5 miles round trip earlier in the AM. Needed a little adjustment for the higher elevation so lots of stops. There are no words to describe the first time you see the vista. Sandie was so taken a back she had tears in her eyes and was speechless. She kept repeating 'oh my God' over and over. It was very spiritual for her. When you think it was created billions of years ago by earthquakes, volcanos, wind and water,...

May 23, 2011 - Heading for Grand Canyon Ntl Park

We left Betsy's and Don's beautiful house early,it was great to see them. Drove 3 1/2 hours to the Grand Canyon. This is the first of the national parks we plan to visit and we are really excited to get here. It is a 4 day stay, then on to Zion and Brice for 10 days. This particular campground has no hookups like water, sewer, electricity. We can run the generator from 8-10AM and 6-8PM. Just enough time to charge up the batteries and computers etc. Bathrooms and spring water are just across the road which is convenient. The RV has on-board...

Jun 7, 2010 - North Rim of the Grand Canyon

It was nice to sleep in today and it is not hard to do here. This area reminds me of the Jemez but without all the people. The north rim is about an hour from here so it is not a long trip and one that runs through forests and high meadows. Yesterday we came through 110 degree temps no more than an hour from here and today we see large patches of snow next to the road and up on the north facing slopes, it is a real sight in June. The north rim is different from the south rim not only in the smaller number of people but also in what the...
