Apr 9, 2017 - Congress, AZ - A Beautiful Spring in the Desert

(Ron Writing) I guess it’s time for a long overdue update to our blog. We have been enjoying another very nice winter at North Ranch mostly doing our normal winter activities. We are kept quite busy with trips to the valley for my chemo infusions and doctor appointments. With the drug I’m on now I need to be at the hospital for infusions every Thursday and Friday for three successive weeks, then a week off, then repeat the 4-week cycle. I also have blood tests and see the doctor once a month. So far the drug I started taking in early...

Mar 6, 2017 - Congress, AZ - Updates from North Ranch

(Ron Writing) We’ve had a busy few weeks since the last blog update. We’ve had many fun times with our friends, spent quite a bit of time traveling back and forth to the valley for infusions and doctor appointments, and so many other things that keep us busy here in the winter months. I’ll just go over some of the highlights. I’ve been working on an interesting project for our church. Four of us guys are on a committee to procure a new outdoor sign for the church. The existing sign is over 60 years old and the plan is to replace it with a...

Jan 22, 2017 - Congress, AZ - Good News!

(Ron Writing) Our year has gotten off to a great start. On January 2nd our friends Dick and Dot arrived at North Ranch. We first met them on Jan. 26, 2008 when we were neighbors in the campground here. That was our first winter here and we’ve met up with them here every winter since then. It’s great to see them again. Lots of baked goodies and other foods have already been shared. On Jan. 9th our friends Judie and Mark arrived to spend a few days at the campground. We first met them at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in 2010. Since then...

Dec 31, 2016 - Congress, AZ - Happy New Year

(Ron Writing) It’s hard to believe that 2016 is almost over - this year has gone by so fast for us. As we look back over the year we feel so blessed that my health and the oral meds I was taking allowed us to travel all summer with just a single return to Phoenix for a doctor visit. We had so many fun adventures seeing more of this beautiful country, visiting friends and relatives, attending my 50th high school class reunion, and spending some time in Hawaii again. We put another 9,300 miles on the truck and camper as we traveled through 12...

Dec 24, 2016 - Congress, AZ - Merry Christmas!

(Ron Writing) Merry Christmas to all! Many of you are probably celebrating a “White Christmas” but here in AZ we are celebrating a wet Christmas eve but the weather guesser says we’ll have a sunny bright, but cold (40°), Christmas day tomorrow. If that holds, it will be the coldest daytime temperature we’ve had this fall/winter. Since late November we’ve had a few rainy cold days but also many beautiful sunny warm days with many days in the high 60’s and low 70’s. This is our 10th winter at North Ranch and it’s the first one we can remember...

Nov 23, 2016 - Congress, AZ - Updates from North Ranch

(Ron Writing) It’s hard to believe we’re just a day away from Thanksgiving already but that’s what the calendar says. It seems like our summer travels just ended and the time here at North Ranch has really been flying by. We are in our winter “routine” so there isn’t any travel news but here are a few of the highlights of happenings in our life since the last post. On October 31st I had a bone marrow biopsy so the doctor can get more insight into the way my multiple myeloma is evolving and better evaluate how effective the recent treatment...

Oct 30, 2016 - Congress, AZ - Back At North Ranch after Doctor Appointments

(Ron Writing) On Sunday, October 23, we had a nice quiet morning at home and listened to one of Pastor Glenn’s recorded Bible lessons. We then left Gila Box NCA and drove west on US-60 to Globe, AZ and then west on US-60 to the Phoenix area. We arrived kind of late and it wasn’t too hot so we spent the night at the Talking Stick Casino just off AZ-101 in Scottsdale, AZ. The next morning we moved to Westworld in Scottsdale. I went to Mayo for my monthly blood tests on Monday morning and then later to my radiation oncologist for a routine...

Aug 7, 2016 - Congress, AZ - Traveling South into the Heat!

(Ron Writing) Yesterday (Aug. 6th) we spent the morning at our boondocking spot where it was nice and cool, although a bit windy. At about 2 PM we left there and drove south on US-95 to Las Vegas. That is a very good highway with light traffic until we got to Las Vegas. We went to the Main Street Station Casino RV Park to spend the night ($16 with full hookups). Fortunately, our air conditioner does a fine job keeping us comfortable even in this extreme heat. This morning (Aug. 7th) we left Las Vegas and drove south on US-95 and then US-93...

May 18, 2016 - A place for the Riglet

We have two purposes for visiting North Ranch RV Park in Congress, Arizona. First, it's an Escapee Rainbow Park and we get a really good deal there (free), and second, Congress is about 90 miles from Sedona, Arizona. We are leaving the riglet here while we go to Sedona to hang out with Jim's brothers and sisters-in-law for a reunion. We came back to the Riglet on May 25. We stayed another week at North Ranch, pretty much just taking it easy. Walking, riding bikes, visiting with some friends. We have never seen a Century tree cactus (agave)....

Mar 31, 2016 - Congress, AZ - Enjoying a Very Nice Winter

(Ron Writing) Here it is the end of March already and I’ve only made a single blog entry yet this year. I’ll try to pick up the pace a little the rest of the year. We’ve been having a very mild winter with lots of warm weather and very few days when it wasn’t nice enough to enjoy doing things outdoors. We are both doing well and enjoying all our usual winter activities and get-togethers with friends. My recent blood tests have shown that the multiple myeloma markers are starting to slowly rise again. My doctor advised adding a newly...

Feb 9, 2016 - Congress, AZ - A New Trip Journal for 2016

(Ron Writing) Here it is the second week of February and I still haven’t started the 2016 Trip Journal! Can you believe that in the first few years of our full-time RV life I was posting an entry almost every day. Don’t know how I found the time. I like to do that when we are traveling but now when we are staying parked at North Ranch in Congress, AZ for the winter it would just be pretty repetitious. It’s our winter life – get togethers with friends, doctor appointments, church activities, and RV park activities. I’ll just briefly cover a...

Dec 31, 2015 - Congress, AZ - Happy New Year

(Ron Writing) It’s hard to believe that another year is over. For us 2015 is ending much nicer than it started. Early this year I found out I had prostate cancer and that my multiple myeloma (MM) was coming out of remission. Starting treatment for MM was delayed until I completed a regimen of radiation treatments for prostate cancer. That kept us in Scottsdale most of the summer – not a great place to spend summer. But tests show that the prostate cancer treatment was very successful and I’m on a new med for MM that is very effectively...
