Aug 3, 2016 - Depart Quartz Lake, headed to Tok

We departed Quartz Lake, headed to Tok, we arrived at Sourdough RV Park and took a spot for the night. We got here early enough in the day to get our laundry done; we met Bob & Diane in the laundry room, they are full time RV'ers who have been on the road for 3 years, they used to live in MN and now winter in Mesa AZ, they gave us their info on the place they stay and told us we should check it out. We all did the pancake toss that night at the campground, Ken won a free B-fast for the next morning, so of course we took advantage of that;...

Jul 31, 2016 - Destruction Bay YK to Tok, AK

July 31, 2016 Beautifully clear morning but only 51 degrees with wind off Kluane Lake. We left camp by 8:30 knowing that we were going to have bad road for most of the way today. Much of the soil along the northern Alaska Highway is of glacial and not suitable for road embankments. Anything that causes the permafrost to melt will cause the ice-rich soil to liquefy and settle or subside. Then if the soil freezes it will expand or heave. For this reason this stretch of road is always full of pot holes or is being repaired. We stopped in...

Jul 30, 2016 - Eagle Trail campground near Tok

A long boring drive from anchorage too near Tok. We saw 3 Moose, a black bear, giant rabbits and cool volcanic mountain (Mt. Sanford). (right from Mile mark 176 of the Tok cutoff road.) One of the moose was a baby just playing in the river. The bear was pretty funny he was hanging a road sign just watching the traffic go buy. But mostly I am just thankful for audio books. I did get to play down by the creek at the campground.

Jul 27, 2016 - Tok, Alaska

After a wonderful visit in Valdez, we decided to leave for Tok, Alaska on July 21st, but Joe was concerned about the fog on Thompson Pass which was the only way to go. It had rained during the night, but after talking to several people, Joe decided it would be all right. For a time we drove concentrating on the snow plow guideline poles, but eventually it cleared and we were fine. We drove to Tok, using the most direct route, the Tok Cut Off. The road was in terrible shape with bumps that were almost hills!!! This was every bit as bad as...

Alaska Trip 2016

Jul 24, 2016 - Back to Tok

We had that pork roast last night for supper with mashed potatoes and corn. Yum. After smelling that roast cooking all day as I was driving, had me practically starved by the time we ate. Going to see about getting my chef a raise. :) It was raining when we got up this morning and it continued as we drove to Tok Gateway Church. We were surprised at how small it was, there were fewer than 20 people there and it was full. Very nice service and they insisted we stay for lunch which we did. It was very good, chicken enchiladas. We debated on...

Jul 20, 2016 - Kluane to Tok Alaska

July 16th and 17th From Congdon Creek to Lake Creek. Stopped at the Burwash Landing Next day we plan a longer drive so we are up early and on the road to Tok, Alaska. This section of hwy is not too bad and the day is overcast but not to the point where we can’t see the surrounding mountains and lowlands. Before we get to Beaver Creek on the Canada Alaska boarder we see 2 adult moose off the side of the hwy and are able to get pictures of one of them before they disappear into the bush. Shortly after crossing the border into Alaska we came...

Jul 19, 2016 - Day 23 Tok, AK

Day 23 Tok RV Park. Nice campground. Stayed here last time. You have to go thru Tok 2x's if you go to AK. There's a Winnebago caravan staying here. The guy across from us (in at least a 40 ft rig) was washing his tires last night, and then put wheel covers on for 2 nights. He also put on windshield wiper covers!!! I kid you not. We had a pleasant surprise last night. A couple traveling in the Yukon were staying in the campground and played guitar and sang on the deck of the office. He and his wife were very good. Obviously does professional...

Jun 24, 2016 - Alaska or Bust!! (We did not bust, yet)

WOW, day 19, we departed Beaver Creek YT Canada, and entered back into the good ole USA at 10 AM (we gained another hour). By this time, we have traveled a total of 3,263 miles!! We stopped at the border crossing and took lots of pictures, then proceeded thru the US Customs. After US customs, we stopped at the Tetlin Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, lots of swans and cranes migrate thru this part of the country. They had a beautiful visitor center with a movie, but we did not take the time to watch the movie as we were so excited to get to Tok AK. We...

Alaska 2016

Jun 19, 2016 - Flat tire

We got on the road around 7 am heading towards Tok via Destruction Bay. I'd heard stories about the road around Destruction Bay being poor and they weren't lying. As soon as we passed the place the frost heaves were more severe and frequent. Then came the sign that said construction next 47 km. Yikes. It was pretty bad. Dusty, rough, washboard, frequent stops waiting on the pilot truck to guide you through. Yes, they work on Sunday. Before that we got to see some bears! (pic) That was neat. Karen spotted a moose in a lake but I couldn't get...

Jun 14, 2016 - Day 22 We crossed the boarder

We crossed the boarder back into the good o'l USA. The best thing so far is the road improvements. That and phone service, and Internet. The road thru the last 50 miles in the Yukon was the worst we have seen. There was construction going on, at least that is what the sign said. It was gravel with washboards all along and you could barley go 10 mph for miles. We were told this section of road has been under construction for a couple years. I question why they don't follow up with asphalt a little quicker. That and the work force looked to...

Aug 29, 2015 - Tok Alaska

Drove to Tok today. While cold, the fall colors are beautiful! Splashes of yellow, orange and red show up nicely with all the green (and white). A beautiful drive! I have loved the Glen Highway before and today was no ex.ception. We also drove the Tok Cutoff for the first time today. There are not many roads in Alaska that we have not driven but this is one. Beautiful. It is getting time to leave Alaska. After planning on getting here for ten years, we have finally done it. Now what? We don’t know yet. I am sure something will come to us,...
