Aug 8, 2008 - Mendeltna Creek Lodge, Mendeltna, AK

Well, I have a lot of catching up to do, and precious little time to do it in...so here goes... Friday we traveled to Mendeltna Lodge, which is one of the most beautiful places we have stayed yet!! It is a wonderful old log lodge, but the most special thing was the way it was furnished. A massive dining room w/ tables made of logs that then were polyuerethaned...long ones and ones for 4. It also had a small sitting room w/ a fireplace, and another w/ a TV and videos. They had 5 cabins (also log) w/ beds that had beautiful quilts on them,...

Jul 19, 2008 - Headed East back to Copper Center

Sun. 7-19 - 20 Stopped off at Mendeltna River Camp Ground. Book says their's Artic Grayling here. No luck, their's so many diamond willows on the river bank can’t hardly get my line in the water. Thought we’d wash the RV this morning, seeing there was no one in the C.G. this morning but us. About 90% done when the manager pulled up on his ATV and said your not allowed to do that without paying. We don’t have a lot of water, I have to pull it out of the river and treat it. You’ll have to pay for washing your rig. “How Much” ??? 5 bucks, so...

The Howell's Travels

May 17, 2008 - Mendeltna Creek

The next day off we went with a plan to go to a small town 100 miles from Anchorage. When we got there it was closed as usual with this time of year. The rest went on and we refueled. We finally caught up with the group in a small lodge by a creek. Their rigs were outside so we went into the bar and there they were having some libation. The lodge was really neat with a big fire place, creek running right by the balcony and a English Mastiff which owned the place. Talked with the owner and then set up. Had breakfast at the lodge in the...

Greg's 2007 Odyssey

Aug 19, 2006 - Glenallen, AK

Northern Lights RV Park: Actually, a pretty good little park in the middle of nowhere. The picture of snow on the mountains is what the Alaskans call "termination dust". Yep. Fits, doesn't it? The highway right outside the RV park was one of the best examples of frost heaving we saw the entire time we were up north. Driving the roads of there is one long IQ test which is scored by the amount of damage you do to your rig. Go too fast? Bust your rig. Slow down and drive defensively? Don't bust your rig. You figure it out! Ho-hum another...

Jul 13, 2006 - Anchorage to Willow Lake Pullout - Richardson Highway

Left Anchorage late this morning. I guess Tank must have worn us out because we couldn't get out of bed early enough. In any event, didn't leave until after 11:00 after getting fuel. It is much less expensive here - only $2.85 a gallon. Beats the $5.00 per gallon we paid in Canada. Drove a little over 200 miles; first on the Glenn Highway (Rt. 1) eastbound, then southbound on Rt. 4 (Richardson Highway) toward Valdez. The weather was beautiful - around 73 degrees and sunny. The road was incredibly windy and narrow though with switchbacks...
