Wednesday, August 8 We had breakfast in camp today. Then we walked up the beach about a mile to another creek. Along the way, Brigid showed us a primitive stone ulu (a native stone knife), and also a human skull in the bank by the beach. Seriously. All the beaches are stones and kind of hard walking. A couple of times we had to get off the beach to avoid a bear. We also saw a fox. We filled our water bottles at a mossy waterfall--Brigid says they have never heard of anyone having a problem with the water there. We reached the creek and...

2012 Alaska Roadtrip

Aug 7, 2012 - Kodiak Trek II

Tuesday, August 7 Harry got us up about 7:30 am, so we dressed and left camp with our day packs. We took the small boat across the bay before the tide went out. We had breakfast on the beach--muffins, hot drinks, and oatmeal. I got some bug repellent from Brigid, as the bugs were making me pretty miserable, especially with the bites I got the night before. We walked around a point on the beach then climbed a 10-15 foot bank, and found a place to watch the beach without being seen. We saw several bears on the beach. As the tide went out,...

2012 Alaska Roadtrip

Aug 6, 2012 - Kodiak Trek I

Monday, August 6 Woke up in the AM and did some repacking. Breakfast was salmonberry pancakes. Brigid made sandwiches for the 3 days of our trip--fish, turkey and ham. We loaded everything into the smaller boat, and we rode in the larger boat up the bay. We saw some whales (spouts, backs, tail flukes on dives), seals, eagles, etc. Also a couple of salmon seiners. At the first stop we left the larger boat offshore at anchor, and used the smaller boat to land us with our day packs. Brigid fed us every couple of hours--granola bars at mid...
