May 16, 2009 - Kenai Fjords Boat Trip

Yesterday was rainy and cold, today for our boat ride the sun was out and light winds, fantastic. This was the first boat trip to the Kenai Fjords this season for this boat and the trip was awesome. We saw: black bear, mountain goats, sea otters, orcas, Dall's porpoise (look like killer whales but much smaller), thousands of sea birds and ducks, Steller sea lions, Harbor seals and a large Humpback whale. Probably more, but that is all I can think of now. The large glacier was super impressive, they shut the boat's engines off for about 20...

Aug 2, 2008 - Kenai Fijords National Park cruise

This is a delayed posting; the internet connections at our last 2 campgrounds were not reliable enough to upload pictures so we're behind. We have a great connection here at Talkeetna so I'll try to catch up before we leave. We went on a boat tour of Kenai Fijords National Park on Monday, July 28th. A van from the boat picked us up at the RV park about 10:00 am, we didn't drive because long term parking near the docks in Seward is limited, and expensive. We checked in at the office, got our boarding passes and meal tickets and went out on...

Jul 19, 2008 - Kenai Fjords National Park

The Exit Glacier lay at the entrance of the Kenai Fjords National Park. The idea of hiking over the glacier was too tempting, and we found a local guide for that. The guide turned out to be a Boston guy, who had apparently come up to Alaska chasing a 'squirrel'. Along with 4 others, we hiked up the Harding Icefield trail, and took a detour after a mile or so on to the glacier. Walking on ice with crampons, you get much more grip than expected. Apparently, snow on ice is dangerous, since it gives you a false sense of security, while you...

Jul 8, 2008 - Tour of Kenai Fjords National Park via Boat

Turned out to be a good day. Overcast with light winds. They say they will have 4 foot seas, which for up here, that’s smooth. The Stover’s drop us off at the dock. They are passing on the trip due to possible sea sickness. The boat can hold over 250 people, but they only had 116 people taking the trip…so we had great seats. We picked the lower level in the back near the food. The trip down the bay was smooth sailing. The captain had reports of killer whales out in the sea…so we headed straight for them. We would normally head for the...

Jun 19, 2008 - Kenai Fjords National Park, AK

We will be spending the next couple days in Seward, AK. Seward is a fishing town. There are basically two sections of Seward, 1) the harbor/small boats marina. This is where the cruise ships and the tour boats dock. 2) The old section historic section of town. Both areas have restaurants, but the older section seemed to more of the nightlife. Today we did a boat tour of Kenai Fjords National Park. The National Park is mainly a water park – this is the best way to explore the Park. The tour was an 8.5 hour cruise through Resurrection Bay for...

Aug 18, 2007 - Kenai Fjords National Park

Kenai Fjords National Park was our destination this weekend. The park is just south of Seward and is accessible by boat. We took a boat tour out of the small boat harbor in Seward and had a good time viewing glaciers and wildlife. We saw a pod of orcas (killer whales) that included about 20 animals. Evidently they bunch up in the fall for breeding purposes. We also saw birds that we have never seen before - 3 species of cormorants and 2 species of puffins. They were fun to watch. The other interesting part of the tour is looking at the...

Jul 28, 2007 - Seward, AK - Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise

We had taken this cruise before when we cruised to Alaska and were rained out. Joe had checked the weather and it looked like an OK day. Although we had been told by friends that they liked the cruise in Valdez much better, we thought what the heck, we might never get to Valdez, or worse, it might be raining when we get there, so we were on for the cruise. Then the decision was 3 hours or 6 hours; we opted for the 6 hour. To be better than this, the cruise in Valdez will have to be really spectacular. Once the catamaran backed out of its...

Jul 6, 2007 - Day Trip: Kenai Fjord National Park, Alaska

Today we tour Resurrection Bay and the Kenai Fjord National Park. We debated going on this trip as we thought it might be too much like the other times we were on the water. It was not. We saw many of the same animals and we saw glaciers but the scenery was different. It would be a crime to come to Seward and not see this park. I take pictures but it is impossible to capture the fjords. I can take a picture of one rock or a part of the coast but the reality is we are surrounded by the beauty. We see more than a half dozen glaciers. The...

Jul 2, 2006 - Kenai Fjords by Boat

The morning after the wedding, a band of intrepid adventurers (namely me, Darin, Mom, Dad, Susan, Lucia, Jeb, and Marcy) drove down to Seward. Our plan was to take a little cruise around Kenai Fjords National Park, spend the night in a little cabin outside of town, and then drive back to Anchorage. The plan went rather well; I'll let the pictures speak for me here.

Aug 18, 2000 - Kenai Fjords NP

We boarded the M/V Greatland for our Kenai Fjords National Park tour. The tour stopped for lunch on Fox Island, an all-you-can-eat grilled salmon buffet. We visited the Holgate Glacier on the tour boat. We saw otters, seals, sea lions, puffins, gulls, a humpback whale, and another unidentified whale. We ate dinner that night at Ray's Restaurant right on the water at the boat harbor in Seward.
