Jun 19, 2012 - Kenai Fjords National Park sea life tour

We spent the day on a boat tour of the Kenai Fjords. The waters of Resurrection Bay were too cold and choppy to bother kayaking it, and we wanted a better chance of seeing wildlife. The fjords were carved by glaciers, and are quite deep in many spots. The depth ranges from 40, to 1600 feet! The tour company we chose offered an 8.5 hour tour, that ended at their own island, and included a nice all-you-can-eat gourmet dinner of salmon, prime rib, and king crab for only $180 a person. By comparison, there was a kayak tour company that took you...

Sep 9, 2011 - Day 7 - Kenai Fjords

Today was an "on your own" day, but the biggest majority of us went on a Kenai Fjords National Park cruise. We saw some sea otters, a few porpoises, and a couple of humpback whales. We got up close and personal to the Aialyk Glacier while sitting in the ice field. It was a nice, partly cloudy day, overcast at times, so, overall, very nice. A few stayed at the lodge and did a little hiking, and a couple took a river float where they saw a bear in the river. Everyone is busy getting their bags packed up to head to the ship tomorrow!

Sep 8, 2011 - Day 6 - Heading to Kenai

We left McKinley Princess lodge around 8:30 this morning heading for the Kenai Peninsula…about an 8 hour drive. We made several stops along the way, one at the Iditerod Race Headquarters in Wasilla, another one in Anchorage for lunch. Another stop was for a look at the Portage Glacier. We pulled into the Kenai Princess Lodge about 5:00. It is absolutely beautiful here. We all have individual cabins with fire places and everyone is really liking this place! Tomorrow is a entire day on our own. Several of us have booked a tour to the Kenai...

Jul 15, 2011 - Kenai Fjords Park

Today we did the Kenai Fjords National Park tour aboard the "ORCA VOYAGER" boat for 6 hours. We started with the breakfast buffet at the Seward resort and then caught the bus to the tour boat. This has been the best part of the trip so far. We saw Humpback Whales, Killer Whales, Stellar Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, Sea Otters, Cormorants (black geese for Sarge's brother), Common Murre's, Puffin's, Bald Eagle, and Dall's Porpoise (looks like a miniature Killer whale). Besides all the animals we got up close to a Glacier, but it didn't calve...

Jul 7, 2009 - Fishing on the Russian River

We got up early today and washing the motorhome - first time since leaving home, 50 days ago. Then we decided to try fishing at the Kenai River again. We took a water ferry across the Russian River to the fishing bank. There was still some people combat fishing even through the first run is over. We all had a great time. After dinner the boys went over to a campfire to toast marshmellows, were they met some other kids. The kids were sword fighting and Cameron decided to join in. . .well, let's just say the other kid had more experience....

Jul 1, 2009 - Day 20...Kenai Peninsula!

Everyone must do the ride from Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula, be it RV,car, or bike (motorized or pedal!). The ride was fantastic, especially the flawless day! We were warned the day before arriving at Turnagain Arm of the many accidents due to careless, urgent drivers and the many fisherman in this area. We had no problems and continued through the Chugach Mountain Range to the Peninsula. The creeks, rivers and streams were breathtaking with the backdrop of the snow capped mountains. I think I got a little emotional, as the beauty...

Alaska 2009

Jun 27, 2009 - Seward, AK to Kenai, AK

Just past Kenai and Nikiski is Captain Cook State Recreation Area. Notice “Area” not “Park” – maybe because it is big and they allow neat stuff like 4-wheeling on the beach and the carrying of guns. Alaska is BIG and they can do stuff like that here. The RV parked in front of the pole barn is at my (cousin) Tim Debilt’s property in Soldotna where we spent the night. The concrete slab is for his log cabin. Soldotna is pretty good sized and has a very nice Fred Myers store. They discount their gas and are RV friendly by providing overnight...

May 16, 2009 - Kenai Fjords Boat Trip

Yesterday was rainy and cold, today for our boat ride the sun was out and light winds, fantastic. This was the first boat trip to the Kenai Fjords this season for this boat and the trip was awesome. We saw: black bear, mountain goats, sea otters, orcas, Dall's porpoise (look like killer whales but much smaller), thousands of sea birds and ducks, Steller sea lions, Harbor seals and a large Humpback whale. Probably more, but that is all I can think of now. The large glacier was super impressive, they shut the boat's engines off for about 20...

Aug 2, 2008 - Kenai Fijords National Park cruise

This is a delayed posting; the internet connections at our last 2 campgrounds were not reliable enough to upload pictures so we're behind. We have a great connection here at Talkeetna so I'll try to catch up before we leave. We went on a boat tour of Kenai Fijords National Park on Monday, July 28th. A van from the boat picked us up at the RV park about 10:00 am, we didn't drive because long term parking near the docks in Seward is limited, and expensive. We checked in at the office, got our boarding passes and meal tickets and went out on...

Jul 19, 2008 - Kenai Fjords National Park

The Exit Glacier lay at the entrance of the Kenai Fjords National Park. The idea of hiking over the glacier was too tempting, and we found a local guide for that. The guide turned out to be a Boston guy, who had apparently come up to Alaska chasing a 'squirrel'. Along with 4 others, we hiked up the Harding Icefield trail, and took a detour after a mile or so on to the glacier. Walking on ice with crampons, you get much more grip than expected. Apparently, snow on ice is dangerous, since it gives you a false sense of security, while you...

Jul 8, 2008 - Tour of Kenai Fjords National Park via Boat

Turned out to be a good day. Overcast with light winds. They say they will have 4 foot seas, which for up here, that’s smooth. The Stover’s drop us off at the dock. They are passing on the trip due to possible sea sickness. The boat can hold over 250 people, but they only had 116 people taking the trip…so we had great seats. We picked the lower level in the back near the food. The trip down the bay was smooth sailing. The captain had reports of killer whales out in the sea…so we headed straight for them. We would normally head for the...

Jun 19, 2008 - Kenai Fjords National Park, AK

We will be spending the next couple days in Seward, AK. Seward is a fishing town. There are basically two sections of Seward, 1) the harbor/small boats marina. This is where the cruise ships and the tour boats dock. 2) The old section historic section of town. Both areas have restaurants, but the older section seemed to more of the nightlife. Today we did a boat tour of Kenai Fjords National Park. The National Park is mainly a water park – this is the best way to explore the Park. The tour was an 8.5 hour cruise through Resurrection Bay for...
