Jun 14, 2014 - Update from Tustumena

Friday the 13th! Woke up to rain and it still is raining at 1:30 p.m. We stopped at the Moose Is Loose Bakery yesterday while we were in Soldotna—so we had Apple Fritters for breakfast today! Today, we have electricity, water, etc. so I could do some washing and drying of laundry. I found out that the Kasilof Public Library that is housed in the Tustumena Elementary School is open from 2:30 until 6:30 p.m. Plan to go over and check it out as they have connections to the internet without filters. Supposedly, the Kenai Borough School...

Jun 11, 2014 - Tustumena Elementary

This will be a June 10 & 11 edition to the BLOG! Marvin called Doug, the principal at Tustumena Elementary School, on Tuesday the 10th to check on the status of our move to Tustumena. We were told to come on down so we arrived at the school in the afternoon. I stopped at the Wal-Mart in Kenai and picked up a few groceries. We have water, sewer, electric, no mosquitos to speak of, and would you believe we have TV. While I was in Wal-Mart, my friend Cookie texted me saying that they were on their way from Anchorage to Coopers Landing. We...

Jun 19, 2012 - June 17th

Well our saga continues. Since we left Homer the weather has been great. Sunny and in the low 60’s. The little park we are at is nice and quiet, across the street from a State Rec area with a stocked lake. On Friday after we got here Jack fished at the lake and I did the trails. Sat was his big fishing trip on the Kasilof River for King Salmon. It turned out to be a bust. A few nibbles but nothing else. He was really disappointed as was the guide. This is not a good fishing year so far in Alaska. In fact they had just made the Kasilof one...

Jul 20, 2010 - Homer to Kasilof

A cruise ship arrived overnight and the boardwalk is bustling with tourists this morning. We drove into town to locate the quilt shop, but the building was vacant and for sale. Up the road a block was GiGi's Beads which was also on the list of places to go. Learned there that the quilt shop went out of business a couple months ago. Took a drive up East End Road to a scenic overlook of Homer, the Spit the Bay and the mountains with a glacier. It was partly cloudy so had an opportunity to take some photos. Back down the hill on West End Road...

Ken & Marge Travels

Aug 4, 2009 - Kasilof, Alaska

Our route today: North on Alaska 1 Sterling Highway mile marker 23 to mile marker 110 Kasilof, Alaska. Today we are tired. This vacation stuff is hard work! It starting raining around midnight, and has been raining steadily all day. We decided to break camp, and travel up the road a short distance to Kasilof and get a site with internet access, water, and electric hookups. We chose the Kasilof RV Park for the evening. This park is under new ownership, and has had a lot of upgrades and remodeling done to it. The buildings are very clean, and...

Jun 21, 2008 - Leaving Homer, going to Kasilof

As we leave Homer Ken shot the great photos of an Eagle on the beach. While we were there Ken went on a all day Halibut fishing trip. He managed to get his two tht you allowed to keep. The seas were ruff and most of the people got sick on the trip, but he managed to not let it get the best of him. He was a tired puppy when he returned that evening. The dogs and I slept in that morning did the laundry and took lots of walks. We stayed at the Sportsman,s Inn &RV park. It only had 8 sites but it was very quiet and nice to be there without the...

Jun 9, 2007 - Sterling Higway

Saturday June 9th - Day 38 - Mile 7369 In keeping with our bad weather strategy, we made this a shopping day. We took the Sterling Highway to Sterling, making only a few brief stops along the way - photo opportunities were few because of the rain. We scouted the Quartz Creek area for fishing and found a few spots that looked quite promising. At Sterling we stopped at Northland Wildlife Studio which was really a gift shop, but a gift shop of a different kind - high quality offerings at reasonable prices. We bought a few more small gifts and...

Jun 26, 2006 - Anchorage to Homer

We really enjoy rising early, making coffee for our travel mugs, and taking off before breakfast. As we headed south from Anchorage in the rain, the terrain took on a new appearance. The tundra and taiga that we had experienced from northwest of Tok through the Denali area and all the way to Anchorage, changed to a more lush, green, mountainous landscape (although there was still some snow). The contrast with the barren tundra and the sparsely treed taiga was a welcome change. It began to look like the Alaska we had expected. We stopped for...
