Aug 11, 2017 - The Cassiar Highway (Highway 37 BC)

As mentioned in our last post, we had to do a little backtracking before we could start on a new route home, but it gave us the chance to catch a few things we missed on our way into Alaska. Back in Tok, we stayed at a fun place, the Sourdough Campground. Every night they have a sourdough pancake toss; if you can get the very floppy cold pancake into a bucket you win a free breakfast at the campground's cafe. We both gave it a try but would have needed a few more practice shots to have a better chance of winning. One of the areas that we...

Alaska Or Bust 2017

Sep 5, 2016 - Hyder & Sewart

On our way to Hyder we stopped at Jade City. They are doing a reality show here and you had to sign off that it was OK that they took your picture. We were thinking what in the world would they make a reality show of. This place has nothing else around it and it’s off a dusty road. You had to be very careful driving on the road and watch for all kinds of animals. We stayed one night at a very small RV camp that overlooked the fall mountains and had a nice fishing lake. We stopped on the road and turned off the RV to watch a mother...

Jul 31, 2016 - Salmon Glacier

It has been several days since I’ve had internet service but as we leave Hyder I hope to stop and post the last 5 days on this journal. This campground has wifi but you have to literally be standing within 10 feet of their antenna or you don’t get a signal. Kind of funny really, but they can advertise they have wifi, Ha. We went to church this morning, the church was right next door to our RV park. The preacher was one of the park rangers at the bear viewing boardwalk. Small town. I grilled out for lunch and then we left up the Salmon...

Jul 30, 2016 - Hyder, AK continued

Continue July 30. At the Salmon Glacier, we just stood in awe of the size of this glacier. It looked like it just went off into the mountain tops into the sky. Wish I could really explain how big and beautiful it was. Once we left the Glacier, we headed back to the Bear viewing platform in hopes of spotting a Bear. It was now 6:00. The Park Ranger said a bear had been coming every night between 5pm and 10pm. We thought we would give it a few hours and see. There was even a chance it wouldn't show. Anyway when we got to the platform, there...

Jul 30, 2016 - Day trip to Hyder, Ak

July 30 We woke up to a beautiful sunny day today. We jumped in the car and headed for our 40 mile day trip to Hyder. We would be crossing the boarder back into Alaska. Along the way we were greeted with mountains and beautiful glaciers. We did stop for photos!! It's weird for it to be hot outside, but seeing glaciers at the same time. They are stunningly beautiful!! Once in Hyder we went straight to the boardwalk overlooking a stream with spawning Chum Salmon. They were splashing and making nest to lay eggs. It was amazing to watch. They...

Jul 30, 2016 - Fish Creek

Although Hyder, Alaska and Stewart, BC are side by side when you pass from the US to Canada you have to go through customs. Now when you pass from Canada to the US there is no US customs, I believe it is the only border of the US where that is the case. So through customs we went to Stewart to wash the Tracker, go to the grocery store and go to the museum in town. The museum was $6 each and was pretty interesting. The highlight of the day was again a trip to the observation boardwalk to wait on the bears to come fishing. We were later today...

Jul 29, 2016 - Traveling the Cassiar Highway to Hyder, Alaska

July 29 Today we have beautiful sunshine. We traveled the Cassiar Highway to just at the cut off towards Hyder, AK. We will camp in Canada and drive to Hyder. The road was paved , but many many areas of gravel, and no shoulders with 5 foot drop offs. John handled it like a pro. We passed through quite a few Indian villages. And lots of beautiful scenery again. We saw one grizzly bear along the highway, and two Black Bears!! Missed a photo of the grizzly, we got passed it before I could snap. One black bear darted across the road, so no...

Jul 29, 2016 - Hyder, Alaska

This is Devil’s Creek turnout on the Cassier Highway. We landed here for the night after a dusty, dirty, muddy drive today. Plus the battery was dead on the Tracker. We got back on the road fairly early and soon came upon a black bear. Neat. Again this area is so beautiful I can’t describe it. We got in to Hyder around 3 and snatched the last full hook up site at Camp Run-A-Muck! We caught back up to the folks we had camped next to in Tok, Terry and Marilyn. We’d been playing tag with them since Tok. Funny how that works. Soon it was time...

Aug 16, 2015 - Stewart BC/Hyder AK – Meziadin Lake Provincial Park

Went to the Nass River to check on the salmon spawning. There is an First Nation Band (aka Indian Tribe) that has a salmon netting operation at this location. They are allowed to net and sell a certain number of salmon from this river. They were working when we visited. It was interesting to watch one of the workers “dip-netting” for salmon. (People did this in Alaska, too.) Basically, this guy netted a salmon, put it in a holding pool and then turned around and netted another fish. He was selective about the fish he netted, though, and...

Retired at Last!

Aug 9, 2015 - Hyder, AK

Went out in the morning to Fish Creek it was very slow. My friend Steve showed up with news and pictures of his sighing (http://stevewphotography.ca/blog/ ) of the spirit bear at Cranberry Junction. He saw a white sow with two black cubs, right in the area that Kathy and I had been watching earlier in the week. We made plans to return in the morning and give it another try.

Aug 7, 2015 - Hyder, AK

Got to Fish Creek at 6:30 AM just in time to see Dog Bear (name comes from his taste for dogs) March down the full length of the viewing area. He was the only bear that I saw for the day. Started raining so I called it an early day. Dog bear did make an appearance later in the day but I was not there. The Bear Festival had opened in Stewart so Kathy and I went to view the photo contest and placed our votes for the people’s choice. We head to the chilly tasting contest and had an early dinner. The evening was tapped of with a showing of...
