Jul 4, 2019 - Healy, AZ & Denali
Today’s drive was just 2.5 hours going 122.7 miles south to Healy which is just north of Denali National Park. We were on the Parks Highway, thinking it was because of Denali National Park, but no. It was named after George Alexander Parks who was named Governor of Alaska by President Coolidge in 1925. He was a Mining Engineer who came to Alaska in 1907 to do research for a private mining company. Most of the drive was on a ridge overlooking so many miles of forests and glimpses of rivers. This area of the highway is call Skyline Drive. We...Jump to full entry
Jun 23, 2018 - Travel to Healy (near Danali)
Traveled to Danali today. Along the way we stopped at Nenana, where they have the contest each year to guess the date and time closest to when the ice on the river will break up and start flowing. We were told that on a clear day you can see Danali from a few locations at or near Fairbanks. There are other view restrictions so that there are not that many locations where it could be seen, if it weren’t cloudy. The base of the mountain is low enough and it’s peak high enough that it makes its own weather. We didn’t see it today and will look...Jump to full entry
Jun 30, 2017 - CHAD, call the ambulance, your mother is hurt!
What sounds any worse than the pumpkin "thud" of a head hitting the ground and Nancy's voice crying out in sheer pain. Nancy, with her arms full of 'stuff' starts off the rear platform of the camper and misses the step. Down she falls, backward, onto the hardback gravel driveway. I got to her within three seconds to find her eyes closed and lips clenched tight. My first concern was how hard had her head hit the ground and was there any damage to the hip she had replaced six summers ago. She was conscious and complaining of pain to the back...Jump to full entry
May 24, 2017 - Arrived in Healy, Alaska May 24, 2017
Greetings All, We finally arrived in Healy, Alaska at 1300 hours today. We have driven 5600 miles from Houlton and used 475 gallons of fuel and 4 gallons of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). I did change my oil at the campground last evening. It stays light for so long, you just feel like working. If I had my chainsaw with me, I could have cut a cord or two of wood before bedtime. The ride from Fairbanks to Healy was about 115 miles, but it took a little over two and one half hours to drive. The wind was so strong it blew us all over the highway....Jump to full entry
Mar 8, 2016 - Karma or the revenge of Teddy Burger
Grae had already arranged for car hire from Thirftys at Fairbanks Airport. He'd done it month's ago and got a great deal through Thrifty online, which we'd used in Alaska in 2013. The lady at the desk was very efficient and asked Grae for his licence. After looking at it,she was puzzled and eventually asked for an international drivers licence. He explained his licence was in English as it was an Australian licence and therefore he didn't need an international one. He'd never been asked for one the numerous other times he'd hired a car in...Jump to full entry
Jul 17, 2015 - ATV Adventure or Misadventure?
When we were in Dawson Creek at Mile 0 on the Alaska Highway in May, we met a nice young couple, Lucas and Cynthia. They were on their way to Healy to work for an ATV tour company near Denali. We thought that would be something fun to do with the kids when they came to visit so we booked a ride. We met the van to pick us up from the main parking area for Denali. It took a few minutes of scrambling to realize we had six people instead of 2, but that was quickly solved by adding a couple more vehicles to the tour. We rode in the van, through...Jump to full entry
Jul 31, 2014 - Denali
Tony had his trip into the park spoiled due to an upset stomach. Terry, Jim, Bob, Cathy and I headed for for our adventure. We had a 13 hour day seeing the pard to the furtherest point you can go without hiking. It was a great day. We saw grizzlies. Moose, caribou, mountain sheep and a golden eagle. Needless to say ex were all tired and Tony was feeling better after a trip to see a doctor. We headed off to bed early as we had booked a plane trip over Mt McKinley for the next morning.Jump to full entry
Jul 30, 2014 - Fairbanks to Denali Nat Park
We had a beautiful drive down from Fairbanks. The sun was out and it was very clear. We had a few glimpse of Mt McKinley along the way. There was lots of road construction with many waits. We finally made it to our RV park just at the end of a large road project. Lots of dust! We quickly set up and headed to the park. In less than a mile down the road we were greeted by stopped cars, which could only mean wild life. To our joy there was a mom moose with her babe and we were able to get great pictures. We headed into the park for our tickets...Jump to full entry
Jul 17, 2014 - Denali National Park
July 17... The sky was overcast when we left Delta Junction, but the it soon cleared to another beautiful day. We drove through North Pole and Fairbanks on our way to Denali National Park. There was more road construction near Denali, but all told the roads were good. Once we were settled at McKinley RV park, we drove into Denali to the visitor's centre and drove the 15 miles we could go in our own vehicle. This part of the park is much more rolling hills than I expected, but it was still beautiful. We spied Mt. McKinley in the distance and...Jump to full entry
Jun 14, 2014 - On to Denali
We picnicked along the way to Denali, enjoyed the wonderful view of the mountains as we approached the park. We stopped at the park long enough to pick up our tickets for our 7:45am start. Then back in the car for a few more miles to Healy to the Denali Park Hotel. This "hotel" had been in the park but was moved in 2002 to Healy. We knew from the description that it wouldn't be lavish by any means. But it had wifi and a refrigerator so what more could a person want.Jump to full entry
Jun 5, 2013 - On our way to Denali ...
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy ... we are heading to Denali Nat'l Park ... location of Mt McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. Need I remind those of you who have followed our TripJournal for this trip ... or maybe even for our two year full-time RV trip in '07-'09 ... I am drawn to mountains. This is the optimal ... the tallest ... the best ... the "mecca" of mountains in North America. I may just "cash in my chips" while here ... this is a dream come true for me to see the tallest in the continent on which I live. We had a rainy,...Jump to full entry
