Mar 8, 2016 - Karma or the revenge of Teddy Burger

Grae had already arranged for car hire from Thirftys at Fairbanks Airport. He'd done it month's ago and got a great deal through Thrifty online, which we'd used in Alaska in 2013. The lady at the desk was very efficient and asked Grae for his licence. After looking at it,she was puzzled and eventually asked for an international drivers licence. He explained his licence was in English as it was an Australian licence and therefore he didn't need an international one. He'd never been asked for one the numerous other times he'd hired a car in...

Jul 17, 2015 - ATV Adventure or Misadventure?

When we were in Dawson Creek at Mile 0 on the Alaska Highway in May, we met a nice young couple, Lucas and Cynthia. They were on their way to Healy to work for an ATV tour company near Denali. We thought that would be something fun to do with the kids when they came to visit so we booked a ride. We met the van to pick us up from the main parking area for Denali. It took a few minutes of scrambling to realize we had six people instead of 2, but that was quickly solved by adding a couple more vehicles to the tour. We rode in the van, through...

Jul 31, 2014 - Denali

Tony had his trip into the park spoiled due to an upset stomach. Terry, Jim, Bob, Cathy and I headed for for our adventure. We had a 13 hour day seeing the pard to the furtherest point you can go without hiking. It was a great day. We saw grizzlies. Moose, caribou, mountain sheep and a golden eagle. Needless to say ex were all tired and Tony was feeling better after a trip to see a doctor. We headed off to bed early as we had booked a plane trip over Mt McKinley for the next morning.

Jul 30, 2014 - Fairbanks to Denali Nat Park

We had a beautiful drive down from Fairbanks. The sun was out and it was very clear. We had a few glimpse of Mt McKinley along the way. There was lots of road construction with many waits. We finally made it to our RV park just at the end of a large road project. Lots of dust! We quickly set up and headed to the park. In less than a mile down the road we were greeted by stopped cars, which could only mean wild life. To our joy there was a mom moose with her babe and we were able to get great pictures. We headed into the park for our tickets...

Jul 17, 2014 - Denali National Park

July 17... The sky was overcast when we left Delta Junction, but the it soon cleared to another beautiful day. We drove through North Pole and Fairbanks on our way to Denali National Park. There was more road construction near Denali, but all told the roads were good. Once we were settled at McKinley RV park, we drove into Denali to the visitor's centre and drove the 15 miles we could go in our own vehicle. This part of the park is much more rolling hills than I expected, but it was still beautiful. We spied Mt. McKinley in the distance and...

2014 Alaska Trip

Jun 14, 2014 - On to Denali

We picnicked along the way to Denali, enjoyed the wonderful view of the mountains as we approached the park. We stopped at the park long enough to pick up our tickets for our 7:45am start. Then back in the car for a few more miles to Healy to the Denali Park Hotel. This "hotel" had been in the park but was moved in 2002 to Healy. We knew from the description that it wouldn't be lavish by any means. But it had wifi and a refrigerator so what more could a person want.

Jun 5, 2013 - On our way to Denali ...

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy ... we are heading to Denali Nat'l Park ... location of Mt McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. Need I remind those of you who have followed our TripJournal for this trip ... or maybe even for our two year full-time RV trip in '07-'09 ... I am drawn to mountains. This is the optimal ... the tallest ... the best ... the "mecca" of mountains in North America. I may just "cash in my chips" while here ... this is a dream come true for me to see the tallest in the continent on which I live. We had a rainy,...

Aug 4, 2012 - Glacial Swim

Brr... it was a cold morning. Bright and early we got picked up by the rafting company to head to their store to get all suited up for our rafting trip. I had never worn a dry-suit before so I was really confused about how you could wear clothes underneath. All I could picture was trying to put a wet-suit on over clothes and how difficult if not impossible that would be! I chose my layers well and only my hands and feet got cold on the trip. All of us still had a little cold but it was getting better. The first 2 hours on the river were...

Jul 9, 2012 - On the road to Denali

July 9, 2012 Monday On the road again. Reminds me about yesterday’s trip to El Dorado mine and how I forgot to mention the serenade while waiting for the train to load. Didn’t catch the guy’s name but he played some Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Ray Orbitson, and others. He was very good and had actually opened for Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson and numerous other CW. He played a Gibson guitar and the fiddler yesterday of the 5 instruments he plays. He also talked of the historical aspect of the train and the El Dorado Gold Mine. It sure made...

Jul 6, 2012 - Healy

This morning I did nothing but laze around the RV. After lunch I drove in to Denali National Park to see the Visitor Center and Book Store. I took a few pictures of the displays inside the Visitor Center. On the way back to the RV I stopped at went through the shops at the area just north of Denali National Park that they call “Glitter Gulch.” I did not see anything there that enticed me to spend any money. The Alaska Bowl Company was nice but very expensive. I got back to the RV and put in a load of wash. Going to do nothing but relax the...
