Read and rate Travel Journal Entries for Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, United States

Jul 15, 2012 - Elmendorf AFB

Another morning of waking up to cold and rain. Temperature in the low 50’s. It finally let up just before 09:00AM so I could take the dog out. About 10:30AM I went to the commissary. Rain was falling again when I left. I was surprised at how few customers where there being it was mid-month payday for the military. In addition to regular carts and baskets they have small carts that are about a third of the size of a regular cart that are really nice when you only need a few things but too many for a basket. First time I have ever seen...

Jul 11, 2012 - Elmendorf AFB

I left Big Bear RV Park at 08:55AM. The temperature was in the low 50’s with a cold biting wind. Again, lots of clouds today. I arrived at Elmendorf Air Force Base FamCamp at 09:40AM. 50amp E/W with a dump station nearby. In order to pay for my site with a credit card I had to go to the Outdoor Recreation Center that is about half way across the base. After paying I came back to the RV and put my occupied sign on the post for my site. All the sites are in the trees so again I have no Internet or DirecTV. There is no Wi-Fi at the park but a...

Jul 20, 2010 - Anchorage, AK one more time

Campground: Elmendorf Famcamp Richard and I went to the famcamp at Elmendorf and Mike and Sally and Murray and Shelle went on to Eagle River State Park. After setting up we all went back to the Alaska Regional Hospital parking lot where Jeff and Susan have been dry camping since her release from the hospital. She looks well and seems to be progressing nicely. She is getting some out-patient rehab but she will need to start a program of physical therapy soon and there is some question as to whether their insurance will pay for it. She may...

North to Alaska

Jul 18, 2010 - Anchorage, Alaska

When we left Glennallen this morning, we still had not decided whether we would go just Anchorage or head down to Seward. Unless there was lots of road construction, we figure we would be at Anchorage before lunch since it was only 168 miles from Glennallen. Well, road construction was not very bad, but the mountain passes slowed us down considerately so we did not arrive in Anchorage until 1:30 without stopping for lunch. On the way, Chet commented that we had put 10,000 miles on the truck. After making that announcement, he decided that...

Alaska Bound

Jul 18, 2008 - Ft Richardson AK

Arrived at Ft Richardson Army Travel Camp yesterday afternoon. Rained on & off during most of travel today. Got the last campsite that would fit our size rig. Located just north of Anchorage and now joins Elmendorf Air Force Base. Able to do some laundry a the campground laundry -- free washers & dryers. Shopped at the new Joint Commissary and Exchange. As we traveled the road between the Post and Air Base, we came across a warning sign for Moose -- a 1/10 of a mile and their was a young Bull Moose right on cue!! Ready to head to the...

Alaskan Trek 2008

Jul 12, 2008 - Anchorage -- glaciers and food

We had only around 100 miles to drive from not-quite-Palmer to our next stop in Anchorage, but it took us about 3 hours. There’s a huge construction project going on just a few miles from our last campground, where they are re-aligning the road and, in the process, blasting through a solid rock section of mountain. The whole site is 4-5 miles long, so when they close the traffic one way and let the other side through, the wait can be quite a while. We waited about 30 minutes before being given the all-clear to follow the pilot car....

ALASKA 2008

Aug 11, 2007 - Alaskan Native Cultural Center

Well, yesterday was a glorious sunny and warm day, but we had errands to run and things to fix. I took my home to the RV repair shop Thursday afternoon and they found the problem but couldn't fix it because it involves chassis work. They recommended a place but they couldn't take me in while I was in town, so they referred me to American Tire! They have a mechanic who is able to replace the multifunction switch that is in the steering column, so that is what I did yesterday morning. The cost was a few hundred dollars, but it's fixed and...

Aug 6, 2007 - A Few Days Around Homer and Then on to Anchorage

Saturday started off with rain so we went to the US Fish and Wildlife Island and Ocean Center. It turned out to be a really great place to visit. Even though they did not have any live sea mammals or fish, the displays about the area were done very well and kept us there for about 3 hours. We also saw 2 movies and 1 lecture at the Center. The first movie was on their research vessel that is used to take wildlife biologist to the Alutenian Islands in the summer to conduct wildlife studies. The second movie was a special movie on migratory...

Alaska 2007

Jun 9, 2007 - Anchorage

On June 7th we left Valdez, with all its beauty, in a rain storm. We could see where the rain dusted the mountains surrounding us with snow. Tentatively, we started off and soon realized, with great relief, that the roads were going to stay clear for us. (The idea of driving 36' of RV plus a car on snowy roads was not what I would call a good-time.) We arrived in Anchorage and made our way through rush hour traffic to our campground. Now, the terms RV Park, campground have substantially changed since we left the lower 48, but the place...

Jun 5, 2007 - Talkeetna to Anchorage.

We spent the night at Trapper's Creek Inn - they have a nice campground with all the sites in a circle around a huge gazebo. The gazebo has a roof and concrete floor and contains picnic tables, a central fireplace, barbeque grills and trash cans. The sites are all heavily wooded, which is a great change from the parking lot style campgrounds that we were starting to get used to. All the trees around us also help to make the coach darker at night. The nicest thing about this campground is the price - $20 a night for full hookups! In the main...

Living our RV Dream!

Jul 19, 2005 - Lakes & Rivers for Camping & Fishing

I think we're settled in again. I found a couple things of Lara's and took them over to her last evening. But, we are going to do this all over again next weekend.....lol I want a few days of no traveling though, to get laundry and cleaning finished up. Eric wants to wash the RV and pickup. You see we were on an unpaved road and I did tell anyone that yet - Sneaky, aren't I? . . LOL When we took the Denali Hwy into Tangle Lake, it's paved at first, but we had a couple miles of gravel before we reached the campground. When we drove on across...
