Feb 5, 2017 - Journey to Alaska

The drive to Alaska was an adventure in itself. We first stopped in Casper,Wyoming, which helped us rest a little, since we were tired from driving to Eastern Nebraska, a couple days before leaving. That was our pre-trip! We were headed towards Glacier National Park but ended up arriving in the night, so we pushed through to the border. Arriving at the border, was like being in the principals office in school. They asked you every question possible and after about an hour of interrogation, we were set free. Our next stop was St Eugenes...

Alaska 2017

Jul 29, 2016 - Eagle River Campground, Anchorage AK

A long boring drive from anchorage too near Tok. We saw 3 Moose, a black bear, giant rabbits and cool volcanic mountain (Mt. Sanford). (right from Mile mark 176 of the Tok cutoff road.) One of the moose was a baby just playing in the river. The bear was pretty funny he was hanging a road sign just watching the traffic go buy. But mostly I am just thankful for audio books. I did get to play down by the creek at the campground.

Friday - We met Ellie in Palmer and drove go Wasilla to visit the Bocheneks. While there, their daughter, Carol, stopped by to visit. Carol had lived in Nome and gave us a few ideas about what to see and do when we are there. After the visit, Ellie had to hurry home to water her garden. Jean and I stopped in Palmer for a Chinese dinner. One thing I noticed about the 20 hour days - no one eats dinner until 8 p.m. Saturday - we spent the day getting ready for a yard sale. I did a little touch up painting on the house. Sunday - We had a new...

2015 Alaska Trip

Aug 4, 2015 - Eagle River

We took a quick trip up Mt Baldy to see if Denali would be visible. It was although it was quite hazy that day. Mt Baldy is 1 mile from Ramona's as the crow flies and 4 miles as the road bends. On the road to the Eagle River Nature Center in the Chugach State Park, we came upon a large bull Moose calmly eating willow along the roadside. We stopped and watched him for about 20 minutes. A car coming from the other direction made him uncomfortable because it stopped right beside him. After the other car left the area he decided to cross the...

Jul 23, 2015 - Mt Baldy

Tuesday we took a trip to the parking lot of Mt Baldy from where several hiking trails take off. We could not do any hiking, but enjoyed the view. Left just before the rain started. Wednesday we met friend Ellie for lunch before she took off for a 4 day hiking trip in Denali. Still catching up on sleep and sort of grateful for a few damp days. Spent this morning arranging trips. We leave tomorrow morning to head for Homer. On the way we want to catch up with a friend at her fishing camp near Nikiski on the Kenai Peninsula. In Homer, on...

Jul 22, 2015 - Mt Baldy

Took a trip to the parking area of Mt Baldy. All the hiking trails take off from this point. We did not do any hiking. This is a very popular area for hikers and dog walkers and just a short distance from Ramona's house. We left just as the rain started. Met friend, Ellie, for lunch. She is headed off for 4 days of hiking in Denali. After lunch we did a little grocery shopping then headed "home". Thursday - spent the morning making arrangements to fly to Katmai National Park to watch the bears fish for salmon. Also made arrangements for an...

2015 Alaska Trip

Jul 21, 2015 - Arrival

Arrived in Anchorage at 1:00am Monday morning (5:00am Michigan time). After an early breakfast, we headed "home" to Ramona's to sleep. Early in the afternoon Ramona drove us back into Anchorage to pick up our rental car. We had lunch at Pizza Olympia where Jean is quite well known. The owner greeted her with a hug and kiss, sat and talked with us for quite a while, then sent over some baclava ice cream for our dessert. Because I was with Jean, I got a hug and kiss too. Ramona had been visited by a large brown bear and the footprints are...

Jul 21, 2015 - Arrival

Arrived in Anchorage at 1:00am Monday (5am Michigan time). Had an early breakfast then headed "home" to sleep at Ramona's in Eagle River. Amazed at the fact that the Minneapolis airport was closing up when we left at 9:00 but the Anchorage Airport was still going strong at 1 am. All the shops and restaurants were still open. Monday afternoon Ramona took us back into Anchorage to pickup our rental car. Lunch was at Pizza Olympia, a greek restaurant where Jean is well known. We were treated to a baclava ice cream for dessert by the owner who...

Jul 14, 2012 - Packing up

Up early today to get out to the Eagle River Nature Center to visit a bit with Connie Bird. She just arrived a few days ago to live and work at the Nature Center for 2 1/2 months. Then we drove into Anchorage to Pizza Olympia for lunch and to say goodbye to Athina. Unfortunately the restaurant doesn't open until 3 pm on Saturdays so we missed our chance. Stopped at a Health Food store to stock up on groceries, back to Eagle River to get the tire pressure checked and add oil to the rig. It looks like we are ready to pull out in the morning...

Jul 10, 2012 - Home away from home

We are still at our Alaska home in Eagle River with Margie and Ramona. Getting ready to head out for a couple days before we return here. I had a great birthday. Six of us gathered at Pizza Olympia for dinner. The Moussaka, Soulvaki amd Baklava were delicious. Althina Mercourdas, the owner, served us herself and provided a delicious Greek wine and taught us a Greek toast. Faye and I danced to the theme from Zorba the Greek, and Althina taught me a few new moves. Jean and I spent a morning helping Ramona remove some dead branches and a...

Jul 5, 2012 - Earthquake

Pam just experienced her first earthquake - a very minor one. I was napping on the couch when the dishes began to rattle and everything shook. It woke me up and Margie said, "Earthquake." Today is a beautiful sunny day about 60 degrees. Just a lazy day to lay around and talk and read. Yesterday was the annual Mt Marathon race in Seward. It's a race of 3 miles thru the streets of Seward to the top of 3,022 ft. Mt Marathon and back down again and 3 miles back thru the streets to the finish line. Mt Marathon still is covered in snow at the top...

More vehicle problems. Right turn signal , back up light and turn signal are out. We had the turn signal lamp replaced just before we left, but it is out again. There is a more serious problem with the circuit board being bad. We have an appointment in Anchorage tomorrow for it to be looked at. If a part needs to be ordered we will leave immediately afterward to go to the Kenai Peninsula and return later to have it installed. On our way down to Homer we will stop and visit with Vicki Williams at her fish camp. We stayed with her husband Ken...
