Jul 27, 2010 - Bird Creek Campground in Chugach State Park (Overnight Stop)

We reluctantly left Seward and headed toward Anchorage. We stopped at a State Campground on the way called Bird Creek. We like to stay at city or state campgrounds when we can. They are usually quite beautiful, camping spots are usually more private (they give you space), you can have a campfire, and they are cheaper than privately owned campgrounds. Privately owned campgrounds tend to be parking lots. But we use private campgrounds when we need to catch up on laundry, Internet, news (they usually have laundry rooms and cable or something...

ALASKA BOUND - 2010

Jul 3, 2007 - Day 22: Glen Alps - Chugach State Park

Today we did a bit of laundry and for unknown reasons, related to us calling to come in the 2 days earlier than our original reservation, we had to semi-pack up and move sites. With the small size of the sites here, this move from site 13 to 26 was probably only 100 feet up the row or so! After all this, we headed up to Chugach State Park for some hiking and birding. We climbed steeply on the Williwaw Trail for a mile or so then later did the Blueberry Loop Trail. We had nearly constant birdcalls as we hiked and at times the clouds that...

Jun 21, 2006 - Chugach State Park

On the day of Summer Solstice, DeeDee and Chad both had to work, but suggested that we spend the afternoon at Chugach State Park and visit Flat Top Mountain. This was the mountain where DeeDee and Chad held their civil wedding ceremony, the closest mountain to Anchorage just outside the city limits. Darin and I went with Heather and Ben, and got some great pictures.

Sep 19, 2005 - Girdwood

Thurs Sept 15 Slept in, still recovering from the huge halibut hoorah from yesterday. Also, the moon was out last night, almost full. Just looked fantastic, big and orange coming up over the bay with the light reflection on the water. Of course, that meant a trip to a couple of lookouts to try to photograph it and before you realise, it's only midnight and we should probably get some sleep after the big day out. Found another internet place that was open later and was half price thursday. Gotta be happy with that. Spent a couple of hours...

Aug 7, 2005 - Unrestrained gushing

What a difference two days can make. After we settled our sleeping arrangements in Anchorage, we were struck with a bout of "so, now what?" syndrome. We had spent such a long time planning how to get here, we hadn't actually thought about what to do when we arrived. It didn't take long for us to recover: An hour or two of research left us with way more on our plates than we could accomplish in a couple of days. We decided to embrace being a tourist, and Alaska has failed to disappoint. This place is beyond words. Its rugged beauty is...
