Aug 22, 2016 - Chicken and the Top of the World

Our trip from Glenallen, outside Wrangell-St. Elias, to Chicken, was mostly just driving. We have completed all but one of the Alaska stops on our itinerary! There is one more attraction and that is the Klondike Loop and “Top of the World Highway.” The “Top of the World Highway” crosses into Canada shortly after the town of Chicken, Alaska. The road ceases to be anything close to a “highway” and as it nears Chicken turns into a gravel / dirt road. Chicken has approximately five businesses in town. Mostly RV camps, saloons and gift shops. So...

Aug 4, 2016 - Dawson City via Top of The World Highway

After much discussion and hesitation, fear of bad road & vehicle trouble, we decided to take the trip from Tok to Dawson City via Chicken and Top of The World Highway. We departed Tok (after having a wonderful b-fast of pancakes & reindeer sausage), and headed up toward the town of Chicken. They say it's paved up to Chicken, but there were more gravel patches due to road construction than pavement, so it was a pretty slow go, and that's the 1st 60 miles out of almost 200!! We got to the town of Chicken, had lunch at "Chicken Sue's (The...

Alaska 2016

Jul 31, 2016 - Chicken, AK

In Chicken Gold Camp we had a very thorough and most interesting tour of a gold dredge that is totally intact with all the tools and equipment that was originally on board even including the old “Edison” light bulbs which still work. The dredging method of mining is no longer an economical method of recovering gold but did produce hundreds of thousands of Oz’s of gold in it’s day.

Jun 29, 2016 - Dawson City to Chicken Alaska

Left Dawson City this morning and took the George Black Ferry across the Yukon River to the start of the Top of the World Highway. This is a very small ferry, that runs from May until October, depending upon when the river freezes. The ferry can hold two small RVs or a couple of cars and an RV. This was our earliest morning to get going, we were on the road by 520AM. Checked with the Visitor Center yesterday and they told me that a caravan was leaving in the morning and they start lining up for the ferry at 6AM so we should either try to...

Jun 21, 2016 - Chicken Alaska

We will stay one night in Chicken, Alaska, just over the US border. Why not! Why is the town called Chicken you ask? In the 1800’s the area was abundant in Ptarmigan, a bird that resembles a chicken and was readily eaten by the miners. In 1902 when the town incorporated the name “Ptarmigan” was suggested. The problem was that nobody could agree on the correct spelling and didn’t want the town name to be a source of ridicule and laughter, so they decided on the name “Chicken” Chicken, population: 23 in the summer, 7 in winter. You knew...

Jun 17, 2016 - Chicken Alaska

We finally got to Alaska. We drove over the “top of the world highway.” The border gaurds at Poker Creek, Alaska (population 3) were great and took pictrue of us at the border before any other cars arrived. At the campground in Chicken, I showed Dad how to do tricks on our bikes. The other RV’ers even loaned their firewood to improve our jumps. Dad acted like he was in Chicken!!

Jun 17, 2016 - Another day in Chicken and Eagle!!

Ok, I had to post another day on the 17th. This journal only gives me so much room!!! At the Chicken Saloon last night, we met wonderful people doing the same trip as us!! No Kentucky folks, but lots of Bama Roll Tide fans!! Who knew we'd see so many!!! We got up this morning and took a 65 mile , one way, day trip to Eagle Alaska. The road is narrow and all gravel. We only passed 4 cars on the way in and 5 cars on the way out the entire 130 mile trip! Just us and the vast Alaskan wilderness. This town is very isolated and sits on the Yukon...

Going Down MC's-LANE

Jun 1, 2015 - Top of the World Highway YT/AK – Roadside Pull Out/Parking Area

Leaving Dawson City, we took the ferry across the Yukon River to the Top of the World Highway. The Top of the World Highway is a 79 mi long highway, beginning at its junction with the Taylor Highway near Jack Wade, Alaska traveling east to its end at the ferry terminal in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, on the western banks of the Yukon River. The highway has been in existence since at least 1955 and is only open during the summer months. The highway is so named because, along much of its length, it skirts the crest of the hills and looks...

Retired at Last!

Jul 27, 2014 - Day 39 World Highway leads to Chicken!

Sunday in Dawson City started gray, gloomy and rainy. Our only option for crossing the Yukon River is via the George Black Ferry. We were loaded on the ferry about 7AM, beating out the 35 unit Airstream trailer convoy coming behind us. As I said, it was a pretty cruddy morning for doing this road so after crossing the river we stopped at a pull-out, had breakfast, watched a movie, waiting for the weather to improve. It never did, so off we went! The Top of the World Highway!! One of the most northern highways in the world, it runs from...
