Dec 31, 2011 - Summerdale, AL

We were so glad to get here! It was raining so darn hard and there was no place big enough for us to pull off the road. So we crept along behind a string of cars. The rain finally let up and we finished our drive to the campground. Just as we started to unhook the Jeep from the coach, the skies opened up again and we got soaked to the skin. At least it was a balmy 65 degrees so it wasn’t too bad. We ended up spending the night in a temporary site as there was someone in our reserved site. They left early the next day, the weather was...

Sep 30, 2011 - Summerdale(Gulf Shores), AL

We went to the Gulf Shores area to check out the white sand beaches we had heard so much about along the area called the Emerald Coast. It was every bit as pretty as advertised. Later we drove to Pensacola to see the Naval Air Museum and lighthouse. And then there was this place called Alligator Alley. With a name like that it's definitely a must-see attraction (for one of us). At feeding time, the alligators are fed pieces of feral pigs that are killed by neighbors on the area farms. The pigs ruin the crops and farmland.

Apr 8, 2011 - Summerdale, AL

Our intention upon departing Jacksonville was to drive as far as Marianna, FL and overnite at a Wal*Mart or so. We arrived at Marianna about noon (we gained an hour on the way), and we both felt good and rested, so we pressed on. Well, we ended up driving all the way to the Escapees Plantation Park in Summerdale (southeast of Mobile), Alabama. A long day (407 miles) for us, but we got a very nice spot in a QUIET Escapees park, complete with the usual Escapees hugs upon checkin. We were on Interstate 10 just about all the way, and traffic...

2011 Travels

Apr 5, 2011 - Rainbow Plantation

Wow we left Livingston, TX this morning at 6:45am heading for Florida. We drove around 525 miles arriving at the Rainbow Plantation Campground (Escapees Campground) here in Summerdale, AL. During our drive today we went through Lake Charles, Louisiana home of a good friend of ours Dick and Marilyn. Then we crossed the Mississippi River at Baton Rough, Mississippi at noon time. So we are now officially "East of the Mississippi" which is the dividing line dividing our country by east and west. This is the first time we have been east of the...

Mar 19, 2011 - Sweet Home Alabama

Saturday, March 19, 2011 We enjoyed another day of biking as we did another 30 miles on the trail in the opposite direction. Before we took off in the morning we put a hunk of corn beef, potatoes, carrots and onions in the crock pot since tomorrow was St. Patty’s day and we weren’t sure we would have time then. We came upon the fanciest trail bridge I have ever seen. It was a lift bridge that crossed a large river. There was a staffed trail office right at the river and the bridge was down from sunrise to sunset. The bridge was open for...

May 14, 2010 - Dinner With Carolyn and Sam

Boy did we goof off today! JoAnn and Fillmore had a mid morning walk around the campground but Doug didn't get off his recliner or even get out of his pajamas until 3:30. There are very few people here at the Rainbow Plantation and the heat and humidity is perking up so we just decided to lay low. Carolyn emailed us this morning. She and her husband Sam were just checking in at the Elks Lodge in Foley and wanted to get up with us for dinner this evening. We set it up to meet them around 4:30 at their camp. We visited for a while and then...

Living Our Dream

May 13, 2010 - Back to Rainbow Plantation

We had an uneventful trip from the land of sublime eating to Rainbow Plantation near Summerdale AL. It was overcast which made for cooler driving even though the temps were in the eighties. We had one major slow down due to road construction just outside of Baton Rouge which made Doug grumpy, but other than that, it was smooth trip. We got into Rainbow Plantation around three thirty and set up. Dinner was at the Mellow Mushroom in Foley. After Doug's bragging about not going to chain or franchise stores to eat in yesterday's blog, we got...

Living Our Dream

Apr 26, 2010 - Summerdale, AL

We spent a week here in Summerdale at the Escapee RV park. Its a really nice park, with a lot of trees and huge lots. Drove down to the beaches a couple of times and really enjoyed sitting out there and reading. While we were he is when the oil derrick in the gulf exploded and started allowing crude oil to escape. What a mess it is going to cause. It was a nice and relaxing week. We all played games and did some dining out enjoying some of the local seafood while it is still available. May not be any after the oil disaster.

Apr 24, 2010 - A Mini Pot Luck with Ken and Cindy

Today was rain and humidity. One could almost say it was the first day of summer. The major squalls all went around us so we were in no danger. We went to the grocery store, camping world, and got some propane before the main rain started and then spent the afternoon in the rig. This evening we went next door to Ken and Cindy's rig for dinner. Ken grilled some salmon and JoAnn brought cole slaw and chocolate cake. Cindy made some delicious potatoes and home made bread. They are both active in their Unity church back in Quincy Ill and we...

Living Our Dream

Apr 23, 2010 - Tin Top Restaurant Bon Secour AL

JoAnn wanted to go for a walk today so we got off to our usual midday start and drove about 20 miles to Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge for a short 1 mile dodder through the woods and along the gulf. It was quiet, flat, and breezy therefore it was a very easy walk. We then went to another place in that park and ate lunch in the truck. We got home about mid afternoon and shortly thereafter we had quite a thunderstorm come in on us. This displeased Fillmore greatly and he spent the rest of the day panting with nervous tension. This...

Living Our Dream

Apr 22, 2010 - South to LA

Thursday was travel day. We drove from Pine Mountain GA to the SKP park called Rainbow Plantation near Summerdale AL. It was a trip of about 280 miles, our max, and was uneventful which is the way it is supposed to be. The small amount of GA that we drove through was breathtakingly beautiful. As we got south into Lower Alabama the country flattened out and the trees changed from deciduous to pine and therefore were not as colorful. We gained an hour on the trip and were in camp around 1:00. The temp was in the 80's although the humidity...

Living Our Dream

Mar 4, 2010 - Road Kill Cafe

Still sunny, still cold, but we were determined to do some touristing. We were up early as the tech was supposed to come back and do something about our electrical problem. Our on board batteries were not charging. He had to crawl in behind the furnace to reset a switch that he had inadvertantly shut off yesterday when he cleaned the furnace. We had him call the techs at Splendide for help with our washer problem. He took the outside cover off and cleaned out the vent hose. If that doesn't do the job, we will have to pull the washer out of...
