May 9, 2016 - On the road again

It's been almost three years since our last entry. As most of you know, we haven't done a great deal of RV travel in this time and what travel and adventures we've had, have been documented pretty well on Facebook. Today we begin our Summer 2016 adventure and would love you to travel along with us in this journal. We hope you will find it entertaining. This year, we left Howhee III behind in Summerdale. That is now our winter home. Our new summer-home-on-wheels is the Riglet. We hope pulling a shorter, lighter trailer will make things more...

Apr 21, 2016 - Escapees Rainbow Plantation in Summerdale, AL

Under threat of rain again, we hit the road before 9:00. It was mostly to partly cloudy but we hit only 1 short rain shower. We had a very short day - 98 miles & just a couple of hours. We had plenty of time to get set up & have taken Callie on a couple of long walks around the park. People have told us what a nice park this is - & it is. But like most rv parks in the south, the winter residents are leaving for northern homes or summer travel so there aren't a lot of people here now. We're looking forward to exploring this area in the next...

May 27, 2015 - Well, It's About Time!

We are finally in Rapid City, South Dakota, and have become official South Dakotans (more on that later). As you can see from the first picture, we overlook Rapid City, and almost feel as though we're airborne. One of the problems we've had with the blog is the fact that internet connections are slow at best and nonexistent at worst. To add to that, we were usually unable to connect to T-Mobile to take advantage of our unlimited data plan. We now have Verizon, and connections are MUCH better, especially when we are out in the boonies. In...

May 2, 2015 - Shopping - Beach - Balloons!

May 2 We visited the small city of Fairhope, on Mobile Bay and met "Henry,“ a people-friendly pelican... especially if the people were feeding him bait fish! A very pretty town with a beautiful pier that extends out into the Bay. We read on a historical marker that Fairhope was founded as a “Single Tax Colony” in 1894. . . not a concept we were familiar with. (Thank goodness for Google.) Two words about Mobile Bay: ESTUARY and JUBILEE. I was pretty sure I knew what an estuary was, but the story behind a JUBILEE was new to me (check it...

Mar 22, 2015 - Just Some Stuff

When we used to camp with our pop-up in the 1990s, we would often go to Kring's Point State Park in upper New York State near the 1000 Islands on the St. Lawrence River. It is a beautiful place, with large campsites right on the water. Our Cocker Spaniel, Katie, loved it there because she could swim after the ducks as they passed by. We would camp at the same site as long as it was available. Lots of redwing blackbirds called Kring's Point home, but one in particular seemed to show up whenever we were there. He was pretty tame, cautiously...

Mar 15, 2015 - Sweet Home Alabama

It's been a long time since I've posted anything here. That's because we are supposed to be sauntering, not stagnating. Much as we have come to like southern Alabama, our intentions for this phase of our lives was to move around a bit and see different parts of the country. We've been waiting for all the parts to come in for the repairs to the motor home. I think everything is finally here, and repairs can begin in a couple days. We have come to the conclusion that, while our motor home is very nice, it is pretty confining for two adults...

Feb 25, 2015 - At Last!

We finally got approval on our claim from the insurance company! Yesterday I called and the agent said the approval came through Monday. Why she hadn't called us or the repair shop to let us know it was approved is another story, but at least all the parts are ordered now, and repairs can begin soon. The other night we went to the Summerdale Diner, one of our favorite places to eat. Our waitress, Sarah, seemed a little unsure of herself and we later learned from the manager, her older cousin, that this was her first job and we were her...

Feb 25, 2015 - Pajama Day

Kate/Kath here - Let me start by wishing my northern folks some much better and warmer weather. By doing that, it gives me the right to complain about our weather. It has been cold, windy and rainy for too many days. Today has been the worst! The same but intensified multiple times. Because of that I decided to make it a pajama day which is always a special day for me. There were many pajama days in NC, but down here there hasn't been many bad days. I rescheduled my hair appointment to tomorrow and we are all hibernating. Right now the...

Feb 21, 2015 - Saturday in Summerdale

Kate here- Had a great day today. We were planning to have lunch at our favorite grill and then head west to Mobile Bay for an afternoon of sightseeing. This restaurant has the most awesome burgers. When we arrived at the restaurant, the place was hopping. A musician was playing reggae-type music and it was an atmosphere unlike anything we have encountered so far. So we decided to hang around and enjoy the ambiance. We had a great corner table so we could observe everything and everyone. We spent a couple hours hanging out, knowing that...

Feb 21, 2015 - Limbo Anyone?

We've been here at Cherokee Farms RV Park since the beginning of February. We still haven't gotten approval from our insurance company to begin the repairs. As I mentioned earlier, the parts are going to take three or four weeks to arrive after they are ordered. So we will be in southern Alabama for at least another five weeks. Our trip to Texas to get our physical address, license plates and drivers' licenses and begin our official status as full-timers keeps getting delayed. On the bright side, we've really grown to like the area. And...
