May 6, 2015 - Oak Mt. State Park

May 5 On our way to Oak Mountain State Park, near Birmingham. This was a four hour trip plus a bit more to find the campground once inside this largest of Alabama's state parks. So big there is room for an 18-hole golf course! John played the course on Wednesday.

Apr 11, 2014 - Pelham, Alabama

This morning we continued moving north. We left Miramar Beach and drove across the Elgin Air Force Base. The first 75 miles was all secondary highways up to Evergreen, Alabama, where we met up with I-65. We saw several grass and brush fires along the drive. We continued our drive to Birmingham South Campground, in Pelham, which is about 30 miles south of Birmingham. We have stayed at this campground before, however neither one of us could remember any of the details. It is a Good Sam Park, and was originally a KOA. It is one of the best...

Oct 20, 2012 - Almost There!

From Birmingham South RV Park – Pelham, AL Boy what a long day of travel today. Started, went through and ended up in three different states…………..Kentucky, Tennessee & Alabama! The total mileage we traveled today that put us in these three states was just a tad bit more; less than 50 miles, of driving from Houston to Dallas and staying in the same state! Guess since we are from Texas and know that just to get out of the state going west on I-10 takes three days of travel with the RV it amazes us that so many times in our travels we have...

Travel day from Cartersville, Georgia (Cartersville Cassville KOA) to Pelham, Alabama (Birmingham South Campground) .... way too much construction on IH 20. When it rains it pours ... as we was driving into Birmingham the phone rings ... it is Ken's brother letting us know that Gene Manatt had passed away. Gene is Ken's high school friend and also Gene's sister is married to Ken's step brother ... so not only a dear friend but family. God bless us all Ken and Fran

Nov 16, 2010 - Update on Trip from Birmingham, Alabama.

Hi all ! We did leave Offer's Acres on Friday 12th Nov. morning and after a short trip to Traveler's Rest R/V to have our left rear taillight bulb replaced and a good bye visit to Jay, Kathy and the Kids (Jocelyn and Alycia), we departed about 10:30 am and headed for Bangor. After replacing the defective taillight bulb one more time, I decided to actually look at the socket and found it was all rusted up one one of the contacts so after a good brushing up our lights were back in 100% shape and people could actually tell when I was moving to...

May 3, 2010 - Pelham, AL

Today we just made miles. We said goodbye to our friends and left Knoxville about 11:00 am. We had lots of rain again last night, but today was sunny and HUMID. At least there was no bad weather to drive through. We have crossed over into the Central Time Zone. We don't usually post only one day on the website, but we goofed yesterday and forgot to make some changes to several folks' email addresses. We think we have all that straight now. We go to Mobile tomorrow for a night. We plan on finding a some good fresh seafood for supper.

West Trip 2010

Feb 23, 2010 - Towards Cooler Weather

TUESDAY, February 23 -- Reluctantly we departed Southern Alabama for home. As usual, the weather is cloudy, cool and threatening rain. There was some sunshine off and on as we drove north. I-65 will take us through Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and into Indiana. One interesting note we saw only in Alabama was the addition of an Interstate Mile Marker Sign on overpasses. A little more information. We stopped for dinner at a Cracker Barrel. Last month during the trip south we had signed up for their 'Front Porch Friends' reward program. Today,...

Nov 13, 2009 - 3 days of dog shows

Pat's earache and headache still was not better so we found the local "Urgent Care" facility which was just a couple of miles away from the campground. SHort wait and the Dr. came in to determine what was wrong and then he took immediate action. Action was two (2) shots, one in each cheek. You can guess which cheeks I am talking about. This resulted in some relief quite quickly. The next three days were spent at the Alabama Dachshund specialty shows, which were also only a few miles from the campground. The weather was excellent. Our puppy...

Nov 12, 2009 - Sunny days at Pelham

I was told when I checked in here that the weather had been very rainy for several days. This was because of Hurricane IDA which hit the Gulf Coast area a few days ago. This morning is sunny and bright. The temp should be in the mid to upper 60's today. Got the dogs out and they are enjoying laying in the sun after they too, had been in rain for a couple of days in Fort Payne, AL. The difference there was that their pen was not on a cement pad and they got quite wet when I put them out. They wanted to come back in quickly. Pat's ear is...

Nov 11, 2009 - Slight delay then moving on

Our plan was to stay in Fort Payne for a week then move on. Several days ago Pat began having headaches and a severe ear ache. Her blood pressure was up slightly but BP meds should handle that. Finally ended up going to the emergency room in Fort Payne to get some antibiotics for her ear. They had begun to work but on the day we had planned on leaving, her ear ache was still bad so we decided to stay another night. On the 11th her ear was still aching when we woke up. She took another round of meds. I was pretty much set to stay still...

Gary's Camping Trips

Nov 26, 2008 - Birmingham, Alabama.

Just a small note to let you know that we arrived safe and sound in a little campground in Pelham, just outside Birmingham, AL. The day was great, and the driving was pleasant. The traffic has really picked up because tomorrow is one of the US's largest Holidays...Thanksgiving. It's as big here as Christmas is home, so everyone is traveling to be somewhere or other for the long weekend. Some will be interested in the price of gas and it has been bouncing all over the place. |I've paid from $2.35 - 1.54 a gallon , just depending where I've...
