Feb 12, 2011 - A few days of rest

We've both been enjoying a few days of rest before heading to the Gulf's coastal highway. What day is today? I'm actually losing track of time. Questions about days and dates are often posed to the very elderly to assess their mental alertness. I've always believed that to be an utterly unfair measurement...and I especially do now that I find myself free-falling from the clock and calendar! Anyway...two days ago we stocked up on groceries, "spirits" and propane (the absolute essentials) on a chilly, rainy day. It's been unseasonably cold,...

Feb 9, 2011 - The Gulf

The air was crisp and clear when we headed further south this morning, almost like Santa Fe weather. Janine and Tim had downloaded some great CDs for us at Christmas, and we now felt experienced enough driving (Alan) and navigating (me) to enjoy the music that they selected. Our family is so excited for us, and we are so grateful for their support. Road trips are definitely not just for the young! And what a wonderful feeling to put on comfortable jeans in the morning, climb up into the truck and watch the road ahead. We've driven about a...

Nov 1, 2010 - A Night in Mobile

It was an easy travel day. We drove about 180 miles with clear skies and not too much traffic. We decided to spend the night at I 10 Kampground just west of Mobile. According to Woodall's, it was fairly decent and just off the expressway. Well, true enough, it was just off the expressway but the park itself was extremely tight and most of the rigs have been here for a while. I wouldn't say that we were in danger here, but it sure isn't a park that we would want to go back to. Let's just say, it was a little on the wild side. The park has...

Are We There Yet?

Sep 28, 2010 - Mobile, Alabama

We arrived in Mobile on Sunday afternoon, and it is a really nice town. The Mobile Harbour is huge, and the gardens situated around it are very picturesque. Apparently it is the biggest harbour in the world. We spent Saturday night in New Orleans and it was hot and sticky, and really busy as the football was in town. We walked along Bourbon St, where people are encouraged to walk along the street with a drink, so long as it is in a plastic cup. There are alot of pizza and daiquiri bars, so we had to try it. Our niece was very pleased to see...

American trip

May 4, 2010 - Mobile, AL

We had an uneventful trip from Pelham, AL, to Mobile, AL. The weather was clear all the way. The campground was adequate for a stopover. We went out for supper at a restaurant we had discovered on another trip. Felix's Fish Camp Restaurant is on Battleship Parkway just east of the U.S.S. Alabama. The fish camp building looks like a ramshackle shack put together with corrugated tin and old wood. Inside it is rustic with old doors put together to make dividers between the tables. The view is worth a million dollars. The gulf was blue and calm...

West Trip 2010

Apr 19, 2010 - On the Road

On Apr 15. we drove from home to Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery AL, which was 370 miles. Weather was 55-84, sunny to pc. The next 3 days were spent the Chuck's sister Ann, her friend Tom, her son and friend, Chris and Wayne. Ann went out of her way cooking delicious meals for us. Other than eating(which we do very well) we played cards, visited, she helped me with my computer skills, and just enjoyed being with each other. Apr 19 we left Maxwell and dorve 185 miles to Mobile, AL. It was a nice short driving day for us. We spent the...

Jan 30, 2010 - Battleship, Submarine, Airplanes, oh my!

Friday was another “not too much to do” day – I took a great 70 minute walk on the beach – the waves were getting rougher since rain was coming in; no one was on the beach most of my walk – I had my I pod playing Jimmy Buffett and had the company of the gulls, terns and other fast walking shore birds. Very relaxing and I certainly will miss the beach time when we leave next week. We had another delicious group supper at the clubhouse this evening – seafood chowder, split pea, chicken and dumplings, gumbo, salad, fruit, ham and cheese on...

Jan 26, 2010 - Beautiful Bellingrath Gardens

Another mild day – about 63 this afternoon – and not as windy as yesterday, so off on the Harley we again rode – this time first to the ferry dock at Fort Morgan. We didn’t see any dolphins there this morning like Nancy and I saw when we had last visited there, but this time there was no fog, so we could see all the way across to the Dauphin Island bridge and causeway, plus we could see lots of oil and natural gas derricks; last time we could only see a couple of rigs due to the heavy fog! The ferry ride was fun; we arrived on Dauphin...

Dec 29, 2009 - USS Alabama in Mobile

We were anxious to get out of the house and do something different today. We chose to go to Mobile, really just a short drive from Summerdale, for a tour of the battleship USS Alabama. Even though the temperatures were a little cool and the wind made it seem even colder, the sun was bright and it was a gorgeous day to be outside. The USS Alabama is located in Mobile Bay at Battleship Memorial Park just off I-10. This great battleship served America well in the Pacific during WWII as well as Vietnam and Iraqi Freedom. In addition to the...

Scratchin' the Itch

Dec 14, 2009 - California Day 1

Day 1 of our drive to California We left Crystal River on our journey to Los Angeles. We pulled out of the house at around 12:00 noon and headed up Highway 19 (The Nature Coast Highway) to access Interstate 10. We will take I-10 all the way to California. The weather was overcast when we left home but became sunny for a while and then overcast again. The interstate was a rather nice drive because much of it has been repaved in the panhandle. The traffic wasn't too bad. After the time change, it seemed to get dark a little earlier than when...

Nov 28, 2009 - A Day In Mobile With Friends

From Gulf Breeze Resort – Gulf Shores, AL When we left Mobile after seeing some of the sights two weeks ago we knew at least one other trip was going to be needed to visit the highlighted “things to do in Mobile”. Today we and two other couples; Greg & Judy and Ray & Barb, went back to visit the Phoenix Fire Museum that had been closed on our prior visit and The Museum of Mobile with a possible visit to the Carnival Museum. Time again ran short and we will have to leave the Carnival Museum until our next visit as well as several other areas...

Home Sweet RV - 2009

Nov 14, 2009 - Day Trip To Mobile

From Gulf Breeze Resort – Gulf Shores, AL On this date our plans were to drive over to Mobile and visit a couple of museums, a historic fort and a cathedral. Another beautiful high blue sky day with temps in the 70’s just added to our enjoyment of exploring this city and its offerings. We were joined by Barb and Ray who just added to the making of a very delightful day. To begin the day we asked GyPSy Jill to lead the way to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception which according to literature acquired at the State Welcome Center, it is...
