May 9, 2013 - Maxwell AFB & Mobile, Alabama

We drove from Houston to Maxwell AFB, Alabama with a stop at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. Had some good luck at the Mississippi casinos with free breakfasts, lunches and 2 for 1 dinners, plus a couple of hundred dollars in our pockets. Of course, I managed to spend my winnings (plus more) on RV repairs. Yeah, we had another argument with a low hanging tree and our awning lost the argument. We got to Maxwell in one piece to visit old friends from Hawaii; Dean, Aida and Faith. Maxwell is also about 90 minutes from the temple in Birmingham so...

May 3, 2013 - Leaving Mobile, Going to Miami

After just a few pills Rick was feeling much better so we decided to do a little sightseeing. I was intrigued by a long spit of land from the east side of Mobile Bay out into the Gulf. Along this spit were numerous bridges connecting the various islands and on the map it showed three locations for Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. So of course we had to go and see and of course we had to wear our refuge hats. We had a beautiful day for our drive, first driving south to Gulf Shores then west on the Gasque Highway, which in English is...

Apr 17, 2013 - OTRA - AL - Mobile

Today we're headed for Mobile, Alabama where we'll be for a week...or so. Easy driving along I-10 through Georgia into Alabama but you sure could tell where one state ended and another began because the condition of the highway just wasn't as good as in Florida. Not bad, just not as good. Stopped at a rest area on the way here so we could take a little break (we're just not used to traveling for any length of time anymore!) and I could get a geocache. Pulled into the Shady Acres RV Park around 2:30 (we're in the Central Time Zone now) and...

Apr 2, 2013 - Mobile - who knew????

This was an exploring day as we loaded up the bikes with intentions of touring the old homes in Mobile. The scenic road we drove on passed through farmland with many what we presume are nut trees planted in neat rows. We came across a truck selling huge strawberries so pulled in and chatted with one of the farm owners for quite a while. The people here are so friendly and even his regular customers would talk with us and welcome us to Alabama as they stopped for berries. We pulled out with a large box of berries ourselves and came to the...

Mar 23, 2013 - Mobile

A pleasant trip along the Emerald Coast through Pensacola, then a drop down to the Alabama coast. Just over the causeway linking AL to FL I stop for lunch at a little BBQ shack - Green's BBQ. The locals greet me on the front porch. They remind me of relatives in the country when we'd go up for a weekend. We find common ground in discussing my FJ. The same friendly, curious people you find all over the world. The BBQ and sides are traditional. The greens are based on a grandmother's recipe and have a sweetness that's a contrast to the usual...

West Destin was probably the best. Our CG is a Good Sam and has free cable and wi-fi and is only $22.00. I think we saw the Carnival Cruise Ship that was towed in .

Feb 21, 2013 - A Military and Culinary Day

Wow, a day to remember! God started my day with a fabulous sunrise, which Linda saw on the electronic replay. After breakfast we headed for Mobile and the Battleship Alabama. We were amazed by it's size and the armament it carried. I always am amazed when I come in contact with war making machines and the huge investment nations make to kill some mothers sons and daughters. Linda was amazed at the confined living space for the crew. I always knew I should have taken her to below decks on the Westwind. I discovered that going up and down...

Dec 5, 2012 - USS Alabama

SHADY ACRES CAMPGROUND, MOBILE, AL ..WEDNESDAY I awoke at 0715 this morning to the pitter patter of light rain on the roof. It never did rain hard, but we stayed in side for the morning. I did yesterday's journal after my breakfast. Edie slept in late. We had lunch here and then left to visit the USS Alabama battleship moored in Mobile Bay. They have built a park there that also displays a number of military aircraft and the WW2 Submarine, Drum. Of course you have to enter and exit through the gift shop, but that didn't take too long on...

Dec 4, 2012 - 'Bama Bound

SHADY ACRES CAMPGROUND, MOBILE,AL WEDNESDAY With a short drive to make today, we took it easy during the morning and left Gulfport at 1130. About 27 miles east on I 10 there was a rest stop where we pulled in to have lunch. There were a number of RV's there and a 50 foot trailer with Blue Bell ice cream. Parked next to us was the smallest class C RV we had seen with a slide out. It is a little cloudy this morning, but we only had one light sprinkle before we left. It is very warm. I changed to a short sleeve shirt . Leaving there we...

Nov 9, 2012 - Deep South

Made it out of Texas thru Louisiana, Mississippi and into Alabama all in one day. Wish the rest of the trip had been that fast. Those big states-CA and TX took forever. Got out of Dallas are on Thursday afternoon. Got used to the hotel room and the routine of doing nothing. The dogs especially. Now I really know what they mean by dog day afternoon:laying around doin nuthin-sleeping, walking a little to clear your head-what a life. Everyday was an "IF" day so it was impossible to do anything else basically. The dealership would tell us in...

Jun 15, 2012 - Mobile, Sweet Alabama

Stayed overnight last night in the Comfort Suites in Saraland, just outside Mobile. Quite a nice hotel room with friendly staff. We checked in in time for us to watch the England v Sweden game and Gaz got very animated and loud. Hope there were no other guest in adjoining rooms because they might have been frightened by his loud shouting and cheering. What a result eh? Had a good nights sleep and got up about 7.20am. Breakfast was the usual motel hot buffet food, very bland. I can't understand how they can cook scrambled egg that is so...
