Nov 20, 2014 - USS Alabama

Yesterday, was field trip day! We rented a van and took the kids to see the USS Alabama and the submaroine Uss Drum. What an experience...the kids loved the ship! They also had the retired Air Force 1 helicopter there. It served president Nixon through President George W Bush! The gentleman over it allowed Logan up in the cockpit to sit in the captain's seat....and as usual, where was mom?......taking one of the girls to the bathroom ...and of course Greg had no camera! Today is beautiful, so we decided to head across the bay towards...

Sep 19, 2014 - USS Alabama BB60

I made a short stop a the USS Alabama Park. This ship is an earlier version of the USS Missouri. I did go aboard the ship and walked the tours. I did not have the camera with me so I don't have any pictures. Sorry. After having been on the Missouri I can tell you the folks in Mobile do not know how to take care a ship this size. The other thing I found out was that the movie "Under Siege" was filmed on the Alabama. I always thought and understood that the movie was filmed on the Missouri before it was decommissioned; o well.

Summer Trip 2014

Sep 18, 2014 - Day 13

Hey Everyone, We were up and about early today to check out the sight of New Orleans and whilst me and Pistol were feeling okay, Gaz and Smalls were a little under the weather after their big night and even bigger morning in the French Quarter. So at a slow pace we headed off towards Jackson Square for some sightseeing and a little breakfast, deciding on a place called The Corner which attracted our attention because it had air conditioning and it was damn hot outside. Now, I am not one to complain about where I sit in a restaurant as long...

Feb 23, 2014 - Battleship USS Alabama

Hello Everyone, Today we traveled from the furthest west part of the Florida Panhandle into Mobile, Alabama and stopped for a visit of the great Battleship USS Alabama at dock there! This huge battleship, only in service for 5 years (Commissioned in 1943), fought gallantly in multiple strategic battles of WWII, and never sustained any direct hits despite delivering many shells on target with dive bombers all around them! The crew steadfastly said this wasn't 'luck' but 'skill' on their behalves! Also on display were many other aircraft,...

Jan 27, 2014 - Mobile, Alabama

Days 328 - 329 of The Big Trip January 26 Even though it was a chilly day, it was a beautiful day. The weather forecasts had made it very plain that colder weather was coming, so we topped off the propane tank in preparation. In fewer than ten miles after leaving our campground, we were in Alabama. Our destination was a Passport America RV park in Theodore, AL, which put us very near Mobile. We drove through lots of pecan groves and beautiful horse ranches. The drive was about 70 miles long and we were about 1:00pm. January 27 So far, the...

Dec 19, 2013 - Appreciating life in Mobile.

When we left Texas last spring we met a nice couple, Kay and Charlie, while camped at Cedar Hill State Park in Texas. They had just purchased a 5th wheel and were out on a long road trip to see if they wanted to go full time. We stayed in touch and figured we would meet again somewhere along the northern gulf coast as they were heading east and we were heading back to Texas. So I emailed Charlie a few weeks ago asking where they were and if we could still meet. The response I got was unexpected. Kay had suffered a stroke and has been in a...

North to Alaska

Oct 3, 2013 - Mobile AL

Today started kind of slow – I guess yesterday’s long drive took more out of us than we thought. Yeah, that’s it. We didn’t get moving until about 9:00 and after a slow breakfast, we decided to take a drive and see the sights of this part of LA – Lower Alabama. We left about 11:30 and since we had no specific plan, I turned right and we headed southish towards the Gulf for no reason other than, well, I just did. We ended up heading for Dauphin Island which turned out OK – when you got the end of it you had to take a 30 minute ferry ride...

Oct 2, 2013 - Mobile AL

The morning consisted of 2 trips to the campground store for our last chance to get some parts and then to scam some free stuff from one of the techs in a service bay, then it was off to the office to chase down our paperwork so we could pay and get on the road. It all went well and we gladly paid our much-less-than-expected bill and left the campground right at 11:15. We decided to head south for a couple reasons, one being $$ and the other being that Tallahassee is south. We headed south toward Tuscaloosa and then back into Mississippi...

Jun 18, 2013 - Day 2 the USS Alabama

On a cloudless, warm Alabama morning we loaded up in the car to make the sacred pilgrimage to Mobile - home of the USS Alabama. This is the day Cole has been waiting patiently for since we began planning this trip months ago. Today is Cole's tenth birthday and war ships, planes, and tanks are his interest. As we came upon the Battleship Memorial Park it was a feast for military eyes, scattered throughout the expansive lawn were tanks, bomber planes, memorials for fallen heroes, helicopters, and in the center of it all the pinnacle - the USS...

Jun 11, 2013 - Mobile, AL

We made it through several storms yesterday to Mobile, AL. We had planned on doing some sightseeing today, but by 8am this morning, the combination of heat and humidity had already changed our minds. The heat index today is 102, and there is no relief in sight, even as we head west tomorrow. We may just go to the movies this afternoon!
