Today we had a hair-raising ride from Georgia to Alabama. Yesterday this area got 10 inches of snow, very unusual weather for them especially so early in the winter. I was worried that we would encounter slippery roads but we were fine. We did see a lot of rain prior to noontime, and even some light freezing rain for a while, but no slippery roads. We also saw a lot of cars off in the grass, sometimes damaged or even flipped over, but most of this happened yesterday. Today we saw a lot of tow trucks pulling cars out of ditches. Many of the...

May 6, 2015 - Tannehill Ironworks

The Tannehill Ironworks was also know as the Roupes Valley Iron Company. A Pennsylvanian built a bloomery forge on the site along Mud Creek in 1830. Back then brown iron ore was found as rocks in farm fields and in deposits close to the surface. Wood for charcoal and limestone, needed raw materials for making iron, were abundant in the area. Slaves cut and hauled limestone to the site between 1859 and 1863 to construct the first blast furnace.
