Mar 28, 2012 - Gulf Shores State Park

Last time we were in this area we were impressed by what we saw at the state park and tried to reserve a spot in the campground there for our stay here this year. We phoned in December and this park with over 400 sites was already full. We stopped by today to talk to the office and we are already too late for 2013. One of the reasons for this is that it only costs $25 to make a reservation, the park charges $400/month and you can stay here for months at a time. The other reason is that the park has so much to offer. All the campsites are...

Mar 27, 2012 - Bon Secour

Because Florida has such a long panhandle, Alabama has very little coastline. (There must be a good story behind that decision.) And what there is, is bring gobbled up by condos and other development. After Hurricane Ivan destroyed many homes on the barrier islands here, the land prices were temporarily depressed and the government bought up all that the owners were willing to sell and created Bon Secour (safe haven) National Wildlife Refuge,. This 10,000 acre park is still interrupted by land belonging to owners that did not want to leave....

Mar 24, 2012 - on the Redneck Riviera

We’re still living quietly on the Redneck Riviera. The internet in this campground is the best we’ve had all winter and we’re using it to have fun - streaming films from Netflix - and to get chores done. All the app and software updates are downloaded. Ken finished our taxes and I finished my mom’s. Entering the figures into TurboTax didn’t take long, but one came out much better than expected and the other came out much worse. We did a lot of head scratching to figure out why and now the data has been transmitted electronically. It’s so...

Mar 20, 2012 - content

When we're not at home, people think we are on vacation. Can you be on vacation for months at a time? Perhaps there are degrees of being on vacation or perhaps that's just retirement. For the past few weeks we have been in a more touristic vacation mode, but once we got here, the pace slowed considerably. We did plan to visit an outstanding garden/plantation house in the area - half an hour away with the ferry or a ninety minute drive if we have to circle Mobile Bay. But the ferry has been closed for repairs and if it takes much longer to...

Mar 16, 2012 - a $$$ day

Avid techies might recall the day the first iPad came out. Ken just had to have one. When I asked him what he needed it for, he had no idea. It was just cool. He pre reserved one at the Apple store in Austin TX and we drove many miles to the mall where it was located to pick it up. We walked past long lines of people waiting to get into the Apple Store to buy iPads. They had not pre reserved. I felt like the Queen of England waltzing in past all these jealous folks. As everyone knows now, the iPad is useful for countless tasks and has...

Mar 15, 2012 - Bay Breeze

At home we have a normal refrigerator freezer and an additional freezer chest in the basement. We buy food at Costco and Sam's or on special and I can go nearly two weeks before I have to go to the grocery store. Usually when I decide to cook something, I can forage in the freezer and all the raw materials are there. The frig we have in the motor home is as large as most RV'ers have, although some folks have swapped theirs out for residential models. This means they have to be plugged into electricity at all times and drive fast as they...

Feb 21, 2012 - Mardi Gras Fun in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Did you know that Mardi Gras was first started in Mobile, Alabama, not in new Orleans? The Mobile area still does Mardi Gras up right - each of the towns in the area has its own parade, and the entire month before Mardi Gras Tuesday is filled with lots of parades, parties, floats, and special events. I did some research on the history of Mardi Gras in the area and learned a lot! Mardi Gras actually started in Mobile in 1703 when it was a colony of French soldiers. After having survived a particularly nasty bout with yellow fever, they...

Jan 25, 2012 - Beautiful Perdido Key Beach Scenes

I just uploaded a bunch of the beach scenes I took while we stayed in Perdido Key. Some of the photos are in FL while others are in AL.Since our RV park is only 1/2 mile into FL, I often walked in two states almost every day. The RV park sits on the river side of a two lane road, and just across from the beach. The FloraBama Bar is only 1/2 mile down the road.

Dec 6, 2011 - only 1 more day...

Can you believe it? We only have one more day here in Gulf Shores. Where did the month go? We have had a good time, but not nearly as good as it would have been if Tommy and Lorene had been here. We loved having Clyde and Ann for nine days, but since they left it has been pretty quiet. I've been doing most of my Christmas shopping online and only have a few more to go. This will be our second Christmas away from Arkansas, but I hope I don't get homesick this year like I did last year. I was a miserable puppy for a few days. I almost headed...

Dec 4, 2011 - What a beautiful day!!!

It is just georgeous here today. 73 degrees and sunshine galore. Now this is what I've been looking for. Yesterday we stayed in and watched football all day. We did have the front door open for awhile, but not for long as it was a little too chilly. Today, the air conditioner is going....go figure... I've been cooking more than is good for me, so we are trying to eat up all the leftovers. I've got to quit all this cooking before it becomes a habit. This morning we went to church again at Lagoon Baptist Church just down the road from the...

Dec 1, 2011 - 1 week to go....

Gosh, it has been cold here this week. Lows in the upper 30's every night and the warmest it has been is 58 degrees in the daytime. Too cool for me. We leave a week from today for Florida. Hope it is warmer there. We went to Camping World Tuesday to look at a few things. Ended up buying a new showerhead that we have needed for a long time. Even though we use a filter on our water hose, some stuff gets through and all our faucets have to be taken apart every so often and flushed out. The original shower head wouldn't come apart, and the...

Nov 27, 2011 - Not Pretty Today!!!

We woke this morning to the sound of heavy rain on the roof. It didn't let up until after lunch and has showered several times this afternoon. Just a raw ugly day. It was 70 degrees at 8:30am and has fallen all day. It is now 55 degrees and I have the infrared heater on. Just watched the weather and it is supposed to be in the 30's every night this week and highs only in the 50's. I think we need to hurry and go farther south. We are paid up for 10 more days, but I don't know if we will last that long. Jackie went to church this morning,...
