Dec 16, 2012 - Time To Leave Coastal Alabama

From Gulf Breeze RV Resort – Gulf Shores, AL Spending our final day in this beautiful Gulf Coast area of Alabama………where did the last 57 days go?.......they for sure went by way too fast! We said our goodbyes to the small group of HitchHiker friends in this park earlier this evening. If not for missing our children and a few good friends in our “home base” park area in Texas we could easily stay here another 2 or 3 months joining the other “snowbird” or “winter” visitors to this area each year. Since our last post we have just taken time...

Dec 11, 2012 - Day 149 - Gulf Shores, Alabama

Today is a cool dull day. It was only 6 degrees when Garry got up this morning. The locals are complaining loudly. I made use of their fabulous laundry facility and then we headed in town. We got our necessary shopping done and then decided to see a movie. The theatre was showing Skyfall, the new James Bond flick, that we wanted to see. We got a pleasant surprise at the box office; because we were over 55 we got in for $7.00 each, and then there was a senior's concession deal, small popcorn and drink for $4.25. So we got in and ate for less...

Dec 10, 2012 - Day 148 - to Gulf Shores State Park, Alabama

We headed out this morning to leave Florida. We arrived in this state November 10 and are leaving on December 10. A whole month in Florida, lots to see, beautiful parks, great weather and we enjoyed it all. We drove up the coastal highway and across barrier islands, gorgeous beaches at every turn. The area is called the Emerald Coast for good reason. The area around Destin and Fort Walton looks a lot like Panama City but more upscale. It shows signs of recession in closed businesses and lots of for sale signs but everything just looks a...

Dec 9, 2012 - Christmas In The Air!

From Gulf Breeze RV Resort – Gulf Shores, AL At the time of writing this post we only have a week left before we will be heading to our “home base” park in Pearland………where did the time go? We continue to enjoy our stay here in Gulf Shores meeting new friends and enjoying ones we had previously met on our travels. Eating out has become the “norm” since our arrival with all the wonderful choices of eateries and food choices…….sure glad I have added the water aerobics to my exercise routine since the diet has taken several “left turns” since...

Dec 2, 2012 - Mikee's - Movies & Moon Pies!

From Gulf Breeze RV Resort – Gulf Shores, AL Just a short update to let everyone know we are so enjoying our stay here in Gulf Shores. As I write this we only have 15 days left before we leave and go “back home” for Christmas. This park and its “winter residents” is the first extended stay park where we have felt truly a part of. Everyone is so friendly and makes you feel welcome. As a result of this hospitality I am now participating in a water aerobics class three times a week. But you better hold on to your hats as I tell you we both...

Nov 18, 2012 - More From Gulf Shores

From Gulf Breeze RV Resort – Gulf Shores, AL Another ten days have flown by since last we let you know what was happening with “Home Sweet RV”! Guess the lack of frequent journal posts is the best example of the wonderful time we are having along the Gulf Coast of Alabama simply doing “nothing”! That’s right, we have so enjoyed the beautiful weather, visiting with friends and enjoying the abundance of restaurants with their wide spread cuisines; of course the delicious seafood has topped our choice since we arrived. Since our arrival we...

Nov 8, 2012 - Alabama Update!

From Gulf Breeze RV Resort – Gulf Shores, AL We have been enjoying beautiful weather…….nice cool nights that give way to sunshine and just perfect day time temperatures. This enjoyable tropical climate could become very addictive quite easily not to mention the wonderful seafood found around each corner in restaurants one after the other just tempting you to come in and enjoy the food and casual atmosphere of the Gulf Shore beaches. Since our last posting about a week ago we have been to two movies………Alex Cross with Tyler Perry and ARGO...

Oct 31, 2012 - Happy Halloween!

From Gulf Breeze RV Resort – Gulf Shores, AL Time has just flown by since our arrival here in Gulf Shores 10 days ago. As planned we have just been a couple of old retired farts enjoying spending the days not seeking out things to do and places to see in the area as has been the norm for most of our full time RVing lifestyle. Have also enjoyed meeting back up with Greg and Judy whom we have joined at several rallies including their Mini Michigan rally on two occasions, met a new HitchHiker couple Craig and Jenny since arriving and of...

Oct 22, 2012 - Reached Gulf Shores

From Gulf Breeze RV Resort – Gulf Breeze, AL WE MADE IT! Arrived in Gulf Shores yesterday about mid-afternoon and then had to decide on a site. We had picked three possible sites prior to our arrival from an old park map we got on our last stay here in the park. But as luck would have it the first two choices were already taken and the third which the office showed vacant was occupied upon us going to the site. So after a drive through the park we made a fourth choice and are happy with it. It happens to be the site our friends Ray and Barb...

Sep 24, 2012 - Alabama: The Gulf and Mobile Bay

The past nine days have been quieter than we expected. We had chosen Gulf State Park because it was right on the Gulf of Mexico. We were looking forward to being able to see the gulf and find out if Chimmey enjoyed the beach. It turns out that only a small corner of the park is actually on the gulf. Yes we have a beautiful view of water from our windows, but it is called Middle Lake connected to a lagoon by a canal. We could not find a beach that allowed dogs, so we have no idea as to whether Chimmey enjoys the beach. We did take the bike...

Aug 27, 2012 - Preparations for another long trip

Fred pulled the RV out of storage on Wednesday so he could complete some repairs on the RV, wash the exterior of the rig, and clean the interior before our trip. He also washed my car, the truck, and the motorcycle. We loaded the Harley on Saturday and spent the night at the Rainbow Plantation RV park in Summerdale before leaving on Sunday morning. We had a day of uneventful travel of 346 miles and almost 7 hours of driving from Summerdale to Lake City, FL – all but the very beginning of the trip was along I-10. We spent Sunday night at a...

Aug 19, 2012 - We have a new home base place on the Gulf Coast!

Most of you know we sold our home in TX in July of this year and bought a small duplex in Gulf Shores, AL, but if you didn’t, now you do! Gulf Shores is located in “Lower Alabama.” The coastal town is right on the Gulf of Mexico and has a year round population of about 10,000. Like my home town of Sandwich, Gulf Shores is a tourist location for summer visitors but is also is a haven for winter “snowbirds” as well. The summers are not as hot as in the Dallas area, and although there is a high humidity level, it has not really bothered us...
