Feb 26, 2009 - February in Foley - Mardi Gras Time!

Bob and Vicki have become great good friends and we spend quite a bit of time together. As the photo implies, Bob IS a goof! and we have lots of fun. They started with one golf lesson (with Dave), and now have their own clubs, etc. Chris, too! Who'd a thunk Chris would ever enjoy whacking a little white ball around some grass, chasing it around to try to find it, and then cussing at it 'cuz it didn't go where she wanted it! So now the four of us take lessons and head to the driving range. And this is something we can do together anywhere we...

Our Great Adventure

Jan 27, 2009 - Lambert's Cafe

Still from Coastal Haven RV Resort, in Fairhope (near Gulf Shores), Alabama. Even while living in the Nashville area during our “other life” (pre-RV-fulltiming), we would occasionally hear about this restaurant 200 miles away in Sikeston, Missouri, named Lambert’s Café. It was known as well by its reputation of being the place where the staff “throws rolls” around the dining room as it was by its name. Vicki & I had passed on a couple of opportunities to go there for reasons that I don’t remember & that are irrelevant now. In October, 2007,...

We're Wingin' It

Jan 23, 2009 - January 2009 in Foley, AL

After the kids returned to their homes, things settled pretty much into routines here. We did get out and about with our friends, Bob and Vicki, and took drives around the area, finding new places to stop for lunch. One of our favorites is McGuire's Irish Pub in Pensacola. The food is absolutely incredible: huge reuben sandwiches, pastrami, fish and chips, corned beef and cabbage. And you most assuredly get enough food to put half in a "doggy bag" for another meal. And there is now about $750,000 in single dollar bills stapled to the...

Our Great Adventure

Jan 10, 2009 - Christmas in Foley, AL

We had a lovely Christmas and enjoyed having our kids visit. It had been nearly a year since we saw Jennifer, so she stayed with us for 10 days. We took her down to the beach and she was pretty jazzed about walking in the water in late December. The water was cool, but felt really good. Jeremy was only able to visit for 4 days due to work commitments, but he and dad did manage to get in a round of golf - good fun! We had bought ourselves a Wii for Christmas, and the four of us had fun bowling, playing tennis, golf, all kinds of games. And...

Dec 30, 2008 - New Friends and Billy Claus

We have made some new friends here at the park and we took them to Lulu's for lunch, (Lulu's is owned by Jimmy Buffet's sister, Lucy) and it was a big hit. We didn't realize that we picked the very day Billy Claus was scheduled to arrive. Billy is the younger, somewhat crazier, brother of Santa Claus. He lives on Christmas Island with its snow white beaches and palm trees. He suffers from a strange reaction to snow and ice and falls asleep when it gets really cold. The Island temperatures are much more suitable for his health and lifestyle....

Our Great Adventure

Dec 18, 2008 - Foley, Alabama

OK we may have found it, paradise, the land of milk and honey, or ok, maybe just a really nice place. We left Greenville, AL yesterday morning, the skies were gloomy and overcast but it was warm. We drove about 130 miles to Foley, AL and as we got closer the weather got nicer. As we drove down the Gulf Shore Parkway the sun came out. When we arrived at Anchors Aweigh RV Resort it was actually HOT, around 80 degrees. Luck must have been on our side when we decided on this RV park, it is the nicest we have been to so far this year. The folks...

Nov 28, 2008 - Home Again

Decided to drive back "home" to Foley, AL, on Friday instead of Saturday. Better to drive in rain on the first part of your trip rather than setting up in the rain. It rained when we left Breaux Bridge, LA and was clear when we arrived in Foley. That wasn't to last, however. On Saturday, we got 2.5 inches of rain! Boy, did we make the right decision! Our daughter, Jennifer, returns to the US from Germany at the end of the month as her husband is deploying to Iraq for a year (Walt's in the Army). Both Jennifer and our son, Jeremy, will be...

Our Great Adventure

Nov 5, 2008 - Ft. Benning, GA to Foley, AL

Another great driving day; we got into Foley, AL in early afternoon and got our place all set up in time to sit outside and have a toddy before dinner. Phew! We have enjoyed getting reacquainted with Foley and Gulf Shores, and, of course, spending time with our old friend, John. We've been friends for twenty years! He took us to Pensacola to see The Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show - wow!!! Those photos will be in a separate post. As you know, we have a Montana fifth-wheel; we also belong to the Montana Owner's Club (MOC), an on-line forum....

Apr 26, 2008 - Foley, Alabama

Foley is 8 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and about 30 miles southeast of Mobile. We drove down to the highway that runs along the gulf and then east towards Pensacola, Fl. There are highrise condo buildings and hotels everywhere along the gulf. It turned out to be the weekend of the annual mullet (a fish) toss in Orange Beach and we ended up in a traffic jam. People were parking and walking everywhere. The people walking kept passing us, mostly young - lots of bikinis. Stopped at Big Lagoon State Park, just inside the Florida border....

Apr 23, 2008 - Rainbow Plantation... Alabama

After taking my morning sunrise pictures on the beach I went home and had breakfast and got Bill to come back with me… We brought our chairs sown and stuck them in the sand while we went for a real long walk…. I told Bill that I was leaving my camera home because there were just so many pictures you can take of the beach… Right?…… Wrong…. We found so many neat things on this walk including some of the most beautiful seashells rolling right up by our feet…. I was thrilled because this beach doesn’t have any shells on it… I picked up one that...

The Beginning

Jan 3, 2008 - Foley, AL

On Saturday, we drove a couple of hours west from Santa Rosa Beach, FL to Foley, AL. We made a brief detour through the historic Seville district near downtown Pensacola ... very cool. Other than that, there wasn't much good to see, so Krista mostly checked out the back of her eyelids. We spent most of Sunday driving around the Foley/Gulf Shores area. For the second time (just like in Ozark, AL three weeks ago), we have been surprisingly impressed by southern Alabama. We liked the well-kept commercial strip in Foley and the Gulf State Park...

Oct 20, 2007 - Baton Rouge, LA, to Foley, AL

We arrived in Foley, AL, a day earlier than planned. We had planned to stay overnight in Mississippi on the way, but the day was so beautiful and we were feelin' the urge to keep on truckin', so we kept going. We were able to reconnect with an old friend from our days in Paraguay, John Stetzinger. He's lived in Foley for a few years and he took us sightseeing all around as well as to a few of his favorite haunts. We ate lunch at Lulu's on the Intracoastal Waterway. She is Jimmy Buffet's sister; the restaurant and bar is appropriately...
