May 4, 2012 - Back at Elkmont Al

We drove about 200 miles today. We are spending the night at Mill Creek Campground. We stayed here on the way down to Gulf Shores. It is a little far off of 65 but it is a nice campground and some real nice people run it. I guess what we call a good campground is pull thru big enough to leave the truck hooked up and pretty level.

Don't wake me up

Apr 17, 2012 - Mill Creek RvPark

Well we had our first day of driving in the rain. We stopped at a campground in Franklin Tn to keep from driving in the rain and the office didn't open until 2:00p.m. and said we would have to pay full price and not get our pass port America price if we came in before the office was open so we just got back on 65 and kept driving. Of course we ran into rain in Nashville. We drove 252 miles to Elkmont Al. The GPS took us back some real small back roads. We drove 7 miles to find the camp ground. It is really out in the country. The lady...

Don't wake me up

Aug 16, 2010 - Elkmont, AL

Mon, 16 Aug: We drove the short (110 mile) distance from LaVergne (south of Nashville) to Elkmont (northwest of Huntsville) this morning. It was a very pleasant drive on I-24, TN840, and I-65. It is just as hot 110 miles south of Nashville (as if we expected something different?) Thunderstorms forecast most every afternoon. Carpe's A/C is working overtime... We are staying at Mill Creek Campground about four miles outside of Elkmont. The park is small, only 26 sites, and very remote. Remarkably, we do have internet and cellular service,...

2010 Travels

Jun 24, 2010 - OTRA - KY - Cave City

Left Elkmont, AL at 9:40 this morning, hoping to get most of the driving done before the hot temps settled in. Still haven’t found a place to check the truck (overheat problem) so will try to do our “moving” earlier in the day. WELCOME TO TENNESSEE: 9:48 a.m. As you can see, the Mill Creek Campground was rather close to the Tennessee line, LOL. WELCOME TO KENTUCKY: 12:14 p.m. Just the normal interstate driving today. We did pass one accident that had traffic backed up for about 5 miles. Thankfully, for us, it was on the southbound side of...

Jun 21, 2010 - OTRA - AL - Elkmont

Got an early start this morning because I wanted to drive while the weather was relatively “not hot” (it’s nowhere near “cool”!) Still, the truck overheated several times along the way and ran higher than normal the rest of the time. Unfortunately, Elkmont is not a town where we’d find a diesel mechanic so we’ll just keep starting earlier than normal and heading north. Nothing overly exciting about the drive today (not counting the truck problems)…easy drive through country that reminded both of us of Virginia….green, green, green. Passed...

Mar 12, 2010 - Heading Home

We decided to make it in two days going back home. So our goal was the nice little park in Elkmont, Alabama. Everything went pretty well till we reached Meridian, MS. I had pulled off in a parking area so we could all take a break and the lane leading into it was terribly rough. Don’t know for sure if this is where it happened, but the next time we stopped to fuel up, Donnie was checking everything out and discovered that the 5th wheel was sitting way too low, so he crawled under the truck and saw where two of the big bolts that hold the...

The Frugal Travelers

Mar 3, 2010 - First Day on the Road

We got up really early this morning so we could get on the road by 8:30 am. I first had to go pick up Charlotte and Uncle Boone and we had to load all of their stuff into the truck, and then load it into the RV when we got back. I’m a little out of practice at closing the RV up and getting it ready for the road, but all went well, and off we went. Everyone seemed to be in a joyful mood, so there was lots of kidding and carrying on. We stopped around noon somewhere in Kentucky at a rest area. We all made a potty break then Charlotte and I...
