Sep 26, 2006 - Day 4: Orkney - Ullapool

We say farewell to the islands and head to Thurso, sailing past the 'Old Man of Hoy' (a huge rock pillar standing alone in the sea), hopefully seeing some whales and dolphins on the way. Then follow the stunning North coast, passing sandy beaches and stopping for lunch in the lovely village of Tongue. We then travel down the North West coast to the fishing town of Ullapool, passing bleak landscapes and dramatic mountain scenery and unspoilt sandy beaches. Ullapool was once a Viking stopover and is now a bustling fishing port and gateway to...

Sep 12, 2006 - Back to the mainland

This morning we went to check out the Italian Chapel which is a tiny little chapel that was painte by some Italian guys that looks like it's 3D. It's really really cool! Beautiful artwork. We then went to a beach at the Churchill Barracks and played more frisbee. We caught a ferry back to the mainland. Our first stop was in a town called Tongue. Yes...Tongue. They sell shirts thats say..."I love Tongue" love it. Mom and dad bought one for Aaron of course haha. We played more frisbee at a place called Knockan Crag while being eaten alive by...

Sep 30, 2005 - Day trip out west (near Ullapool)

This morning we got up early and got ready for a driving tour. We hopped in the car, and Leigh drove us first to the Cromarty Firth (where I took some pictures of the big oil rigs being fixed - thought Brendon would find that interesting!). Then we drove up to a place called Shin Falls, which besides having the falls, has the only other Harrod's store (the big store is in London and is owned by Dodi Al-Fayed's father). It was so funny to have this fancy shop in the middle of nowhere. We grabbed lunch at the restaurant then took a look at...

Aug 6, 2005 - The most scenic drive ever

I set off this morning from Thurso on the postbus as far as a town called Tongue, also on the far north coast. We had a little stopover in a village called Bettyhill and I thought of you both, Nana and Grandmere! It's basically so remote up here that the only way to get around is to travel with the mailman, so that was quite an experience. Most of the road was just single lane with random passing places to pull over if you meet an oncoming car. The countryside was covered in heather, but the mailman told me I missed it when it was in full...

Kristy's World Tour!

May 27, 2005 - Ullapool

Yesterday afternoon, we traveled with the Crooks up to Ullapool to visit their son, his wife, and their three small children. Ullapool is in on the very North Western shore of Scotland. It was beautiful up there, but also freezing. The Crook family was so adorable. Their children were the cutest ever. The reason for the visit was the little girl's 6th birthday party. Her name is Mhairi. It is Gaelic for Mary and pronounced Vari. She was so cute. The parents actually have the option of having their children taught in Gaelic or English and...

Jan 5, 2001 - 1974 August 26 - SCOTLAND – Bus Tour - Loch Broom, Ullapool and Summer Isles

Today I took a bus tour to northwestern Scotland to the little fishing village of Ullapool. Along the way we saw Cromarty Firth, Loch Broom and Corrieshalloch Gorge. I was sorry to see the tour end because I would have to return to London and the workaday world tomorrow. I would be hard pressed to select a favorite site in Scotland; the entire country is beautiful.
