Oct 25, 2020 - Back to Thatcham

This is where the river joins and, although you can't really tell it from this photo, there is quite a strong current and boats get washed across the river coming out of and going into the lock. So we had to go through it twice. We went downstream to Aldermaston to fill up with water and that wasn't too bad, although going through the swing bridge immediately around the corner from the lock was a bit hairy - because it narrows the water has only a small path to get through, therefore it flows very quickly. Coming back was more of an issue...

Oct 20, 2020 - Woolhampton

Down another 3 locks yesterday and ended mooring up at Woolhampton Lock for a couple of days. Our walk took us partly around the lake which is just to the south of the canal and well used by fishermen. This Church is way up on the hillside and I managed to get a good view of it from the boat as we cruised along. Trying to miss the railway pylons and wires was a bit tricky. We were going to try and walk to it today, but my back is playing up and I didn't want to push it. There doesn't seem to be an easy track to reach it from here so it...

Oct 18, 2020 - Busy boaters weekend

I think this little fella is some sort of Grebe. He just suddenly appeared yesterday and then just as suddenly was gone. It was quite a busy day boat wise. Glad we were tied up securely - they are still sending holiday boats out, making up for the losses over the lockdown. They only have another couple of weeks before the official winter season starts and they put them away till next season.. We wandered into town and were surprised at how big it is. Our little canal guide book makes it out to be just a small grocery store and chemist, but...

Oct 16, 2020 - Getting chilly

We moved on to Newbury and spent a few days doing some shopping and enjoying some sunny days. this is all you can see of this warning sign as you come up to the weir. Not until you are around the bend are you able to read what it says. The trees need some attention all along the canal. We had trouble today with more over hanging branches. Hopefully the CRT will do something over the winter??? But we won't be holding our breath!!! The swans gathered around us as we prepared to depart Newbury this morning. The day started off quite sunny...

Sep 30, 2019 - Monkey marsh lock

We walked back into Aldermaston Wharf yesterday between rain showers. Not much to see really, just the marina where the holiday rental boats home is and apart from a pub down the road thats it. We decided to move on a bit further today, but we're finding it very difficult to find places to moor and therefore have to travel further and longer than we would like. We navigated another 4 locks with a total rise of 33 feet. Some nice brickwork on this bridge, pity the walkway wasn't so nice. This church was up on the hill - nowhere to moor...
