Jul 6, 2012 - Rain again, an unusual house and Grasmere
We woke up to rain once again so we decided to visit Townend in Troutbeck. Townend was the family farm of the Brownes. The house was built in 1626 for George Browne, a 'statesman' (wealthy yeoman) farmer and his new bride, Susannah Rawlinson. The house remained in the family until 1943. The house was quite quirky with a lot of carved furniture by the 19th century George Browne, a library with many rare books and some funny family stories which our guide recanted. Apr 2, 2008 - The Lakes district
Our journey continued to Grasmere and Burthalyp Howe Youth Hostel. What a beautiful place. The hills and countryside was magnificent. The town was crowded, and we went for a walk around the quaint streets to see the burial place of William Wordsworth, and the fields of daffodils. We also bought some really nice gingerbread, and Zac played in the local playground. The hostel is a popular place for walkers, and was very full, being school holidays. Aug 15, 2007 - The Lakes
My first day in the Lakes was a bit of a shocker. Rain, rain and more rain. Still that can have its benefits as it let me get some washing done, allowed for catching up on reading and even a spot of shopping around Bowness-on-Windermere where I was staying. All very enjoyable while on holiday. :) Today though, the weather gods are being kind and the sun is actually shining.
