Oct 24, 2019 - Black Boys and Cockies!!
This stretch of canal has an abundance of Black boy grass trees growing along the banks. Tony spotted the Cocky in a tree - a long necked one at that. White heron in fact. This lonely swan was just drifting along. We had this to contend with the other day - a swing bridge in the middle of a lock. It was quite stiff to open too. There's lots of lovely bright coloured lichen in the hedgerows now....Jump to full entry
Oct 23, 2019 - Little Bedwyn
A quaint little village is Little Bedwyn, with thatched roofed houses and buildings dating back to the mid 1800's. The old horse stables with a boar's head on top of the wind vane and the big bonfire in the village green ready for bonfire night. The Church is covered in flint and looks very pretty. To our surprise it was open so we had a look inside.. This Church spire is 800 years old and was struck down by lightning in 1963 so has been replaced. Oct 22, 2019 - Onward and upward
We rose 30'4" today over 4 locks. Some hard work on a few of the lock gates, and a very stiff swing bridge in the middle of one of the locks. Someone had forgotten to follow the instructions at this lock and didn't leave the lock empty - the gates are leaking so badly it just keeps filling up, so was overflowing. We spotted some grape vines growing on the side of the hill just before a lock. After we had tied up etc. we wandered over to the outskirts of the village of Froxfield where there are some old almshouses. A very simple...Jump to full entry
