Today drove north through the college town of Marlborough to the Avebury World Heritage sites. The two main sites visited were Silbury Hill and the Avebury Henge and Stone Circles. Silbury Hill is the largest man-made prehistoric mound in Europe. The height and volume compared with the Egyptian pyramids. It was built across 100 years around 2400BC but it is unclear the purpose of the hill. The Avebury Henge and Stone circles was impressive. The henge was built and altered between 2600BC and 2400BC and encloses an area of approximately 25...

Avebury was cool! It is much less known than Stonehenge, and not astronomically aligned, yet much bigger. It is interesting to wonder what was so special about this area that the people back then spent so many lifetimes of effort and work into all the sites around here. There is Stonehenge, Avebury, the Woodhenge, and another spot where a wooden henge was (I posted a pic); there is also Salisbury Hill, which is a huge mound, for purposes unknown. Next stop after Lacock was at Avebury. Less famous than its cousin Stonehenge, it is nonetheless a much bigger site and even though superstitious villages tried to destroy much of it in the 18th century. The actual town is built through much of the stone circle which might indicate how large it is. Each surviving stone placed in the ring is actually deceptively large and impresses an image on just how immense this site must have been when it was finished construction around 2500BC. Why it along with Stonehenge was built is all speculation...

Having travelled easily and without hitch from Reading to Swindon by train I then walked the 100 yards or so to Swindon bus station to board the last bus to Trowbridge (Stagecoach number 49, stopping at, amongst others, Avebury, Beckhampton and Devizes - if you're interested). I have always imagined that the Spandau Prison was a truly bleak and unremittingly depressing place - as a gaol for a Nazi war-criminal should be. But I'm not sure I would wish a lifetime in Swindon Bus Station on even Rudolf Hess. Half an hour was more than enough...
