Sep 28, 2007 - Little Ann - Hampshire

With Aly (Mandys sister) and Steve for two nights, and what two nights they were. A train from Waterloo had us to Andover in just over 1 hour, with a couple of stops on the way. Little Ann is only a 5 minute drive from here. There is not much to the village, a couple of pubs plus a general store, but the surrounding villages and facilities are only a short drive away. The village and countryside could be straight from a Constable painting. Lush green landscape, meandering creeks and streams, willow trees etc, coupled with drizzly overcast...

Jun 30, 2007 - Visiting the Safari Park at Longleat, home of the Marquis of Bath

We were glad that we had moored at Cambrian Cruisers on a clear Friday night, because it was raining again on Saturday morning when we packed up to return the boat at 9 am. Our drive on the M4 to Bath in heavy traffic was very wet. I was glad to leave the motorway behind and head south to Longleat, the big estate of the Marquis of Bath. We visited Longleat 30 years ago on our first trip to Britain, so it was interesting to see the changes there. In 1949, the lords of the manor couldn't afford to keep up the house and gardens, so they...

Jun 7, 2006 - Bath

Last day in Ireland. Up and foot tour of Kilkenny and usual castle look. Couldn't do big tour do to time commitments of the ferry back to the UK etc. Off to Rosslair, wanted to be there early so no stuff up's getting back. Rosslair not all that flash with limited eating and things to look at. Just a dodgy port to us. Another smooth ride across to Kylies absolute delight. Prone to sea sickness see. Also not a great deal in between Fishguard where we port and Bath. Decided to do the big drive to get to Bath that night rather than waste a...

May 26, 2006 - Stonehenge

Thurs 25th May: Decided that we should finally do some sightseeing today. So we borrowed our friend Matt's car and headed out for the apparently long journey to Stonehenge. It ended up taking all of 45 minutes, and should have been quicker except that we didn't know if the speed limits were in miles or kilometers! Stonehenge is in the middle of a paddock on the Salisbury plains (notice the sheep in the photo!). You can just drive past and get a decent look, but if you pay to get in then you get a fancy headset that gives you info as you...

Jun 18, 2005 - Cousins Under Canvas

Thanks to Alexander and Nicky and God (for the weather), we had the most wonderful weekend catching up with sprogs and partners... And what a gorgeous house and garden they have. In the Raymond and Margaret Sturge empire of 5 children, they produced 16 first cousins who are all married, making 32 (less 3 couples who couldn't make it because they live overseas). They are all reproducing at a rapid rate thus far producing about 30 second cousins, including 2 sets of twins with a third on the way. (Of these only 10 couldn't be there). So for...

Jun 3, 2005 - The preparation begins

It's either a grand plan or a folly - driving from the UK to Australia, however both plans and follys need some organising. Step One - buy a motorhome. Check. We are now the proud owners of a 1996 Fiat Ducato Granduca Motorhome which will quite literally be our abode for the next 12 months or so. As we are both practically minded and not afraid of doing a little work we have been modifying the vehicle to better suit our needs. More importantly, we've completed all the tedious but necessary paperwork required for driving a vehicle around...
