Oct 7, 2012 - North Yorkshire
This daytrip will remain a highlight when thinking back on this adventure year from now. It happened to be a very beautiful sunny day and I was with my good friend Saba. We went on a trip through North Yorkshire. We first stopped at the Hole of Horcrum. There are many tales as to why the hole is there. One is that a giant punched the earth. That was cool but it was a short stop. Then we got to the seaside town of Whitby! So wonderful! We first went into the Whitby Abbey. It was ruined by King Henry VIII. It was still very beautiful and...

May 9, 2012 - Scarbourough Castle
Scarborough is the oldest holiday resort in the country as it first attracted visitors in early seventeenth century when mineral springs were discovered. Scarborough has two bays with a headland between the bays on which sits Scarborough Castle. To get the best views in Scarborough we headed to Scarborough Castle. Because of its prominent position the headland has been an important location along the coast for over 3,000 years. The Romans had a signal station here. Henry II developed the castle during the 12th century, the keep dominating...

May 5, 2012 - Our first walk along the Yorkshire Coast
We left York and headed east to Scarborough. We had booked in for a week at a campground just outside Scarborough to allow us time to explore the Yorkshire coastline and the North Yorkshire Moors. On our first day we headed out to Ravenscar just north of Scarborough. From Ravenscar you get great views of the coastline and Robin Hood Bay. We walked a trail called Raven’s View from the visitors centre along the Cleveland Way to an old Alum Works. In exploring the site we discovered that between 1640 and 1862 Ravenscar was a busy and important...

Jan 6, 2011 - Scarborough
Scarborough, another seaside resort/fishing town in Yorkshire (also lays claim to having the best fish and chips) (http://www.scarborough.co.uk/photos.html). The hotel we have chosen is right on the Esplanade overlooking the bay. a quick tour of the town quickly confirms that it is indeed a tourist town. Along the esplanade every 2nd business is an amusement parlour. But not the amusement parlour we may remember from our youth. Instead of pinball machines or video games, these parlours are filled with games of chance machines - still with...

Jul 5, 2008 - Scarborough
So we went to Scarborough today. It's the place from the song by the group I don't know the name of. We've been sooo blessed up until today to have had beautiful weather, even though northern England is normally always cold and rainy. Until today, that is... it was cold and freezing all day. We had outdoor stuff planned, but the weather was bad... so we made the most of it and went to the mall. :) And to top that off, I went to pizza hut, that's right, pizza hut. Love it.

Jun 8, 2008 - Scarborough, Englan
On Saturday, I traveled over to Scarborough which is on the English Channel in the Northeast of England about 1 3/4 hr drive south from my flat in Yarm. It's a lovely drive by mostly on country back roads with speeds dropping to 30 mph as one travels through the villages in the English countryside. Scarborough sits on the hills overlooking the English Channel. It's a classic English seaside town with lots of shops, narrow streets, a hilly terrain, wide sandy beaches, a fishing harbor, and a large (in area) castle. I've attached photos of...

Jun 11, 2006 - A short break on Englands east coast
Well we have been back in the UK for six weeks now and have never stopped working. All those jobs that needed doing on our return including the removal of a dead and highly pungent "RAT" from our utility room roof had to be done. Last week, the weather being so hot we decided to visit Whitby, Ravenscar, Robin Hoods Bay, Flamborough Head and Spurn Point to do a little light walking and also do some bird watching. Part of the cliff path had disappeared at Whitby so we headed for Robin Hoods Bay (Fish and Chips) then Ravenscar to see the grey...

Feb 23, 2006 - I'm OFF!!!!
Hello! Well, as I'm writing this I'm sitting in my room in boring old Guisborough, but if you're reading this then I'm in Mexico - finally!!! I can't believe it's come around so quickly and I'm actually off. We're spending a month in Mexico, starting in Cancun for a bit of a break, and then moving on to Peru for the dreaded Inca Trail (hopefully all that gym work paid off.) After that it's time for the holiday to end and the work to begin when we move in with our families and start teaching English (still unsure of how to do this so any...

Sep 18, 2005 - York, Scarsborough and Whitby
Spent weekend with Korina exploring some of the more touristy attractions in the North of England. Saturday was spent walking around York, looking at the medieval architecture and attending a food and wine festival. Pretty crazy little streets, amusingly enough called 'the Shambles'. After York, we had a look at Howard Castle, which is still lived in by some tofts unsurprisingly named Howard. Pretty impressive, but really brought home to me how there exists her an upper class of such wealth that just does not exist in New Zealand. 10,000...

Aug 4, 2005 - Chips, Castles, and Noddy (and lack of photos)
We are now in Yorkshire! We don't have internet access from our cottage, so we have found a cafe where we can access it for a short time. Our last days in Royal Tunbridge Wells were very nice as we continued to "play house" at the Fenbys'. We enjoyed their big kitchen and all their cool kitchen gadgets -- a great improvement from those little corner things we had in Paris. I went through their cookbooks and made Toad in the Hole, which is sausages cooked into yorkshire pudding. Yummy! Also, one night Tim and I walked down to the local Fish...
Jump to full entryJul 6, 2005 - Buxton to Whitby
After checking out of the Sevenways this morning, we walked around Buxton a bit. It is a surprising little town with an apparently thriving arts community. They even have a Theatre Fringe Festival, which was gearing up to start on Friday the 8th. There were banners going up and barriers, and a trailer with a sign reading "Festival Office and Information." As I mentioned in one of the photo captions, there is also an opera house and a Gilbert & Sullivan Museum. The town also has its own set of hot springs, which was developed into a spa in...
