Aug 26, 2019 - Flying in and a bit of wandering around.

Quite a long "first day" flew out of Melbourne at 4 PM on Sunday and arrived after 14 hours in Abu Dhabi at around midnight local time. We have a 3 hour gap that blew out a bit. The airport at Abu Dhabi was packed, even though it was between 12 and 3 AM on a Monday morning. The 7 hour flight to Heathrow was smooth and we made up some time. After clearing customs etc (about 15 minutes) we found our way on the trains to our flat. We had a few things to do here, but we soon headed out to Kings Cross Station for a look, then experiencing the...

Aug 13, 2019 - London for a night

Tuesday 13th August We had a good sleep, despite being across the road from the town clock – that chimed every quarter hour. We needed to keep the window open because it was still fairly warm, and we were hopeful the town clock would stop chiming at 11pm… it didn’t. But luckily it did not disturb us much at all. After a cooked breakfast we head off back to Reading to drop off the rental car, and then catch the bus to London, £24/$46 We are staying at the Oyo Belgravia £66.56 ($128), a tiny room on the fourth floor, no lifts. The roof is...

2019 tour

Aug 1, 2019 - London at last

Thursday 1st August It is a short walk to the train station, tickets to London cost £16.40 ($31). At Waterloo we buy two Oyster cards and put a fiver on them, £20 ($38). From Waterloo we take a bus as the tube station is too busy at Russell Sq, and there are lots of stairs. We are staying at Smart Russsell Square, a favourite hostel from when we were last here, £66.70 ($127) for two nights. The hostel has changed a lot, as have the customers. The big bathroom in the basement has gone (just six shower cubicles, the rest of the area has been...

Jun 3, 2019 - London and a Summary of the Trip

Good morning, We had a full day in London on Saturday. We walked from our hotel near St. Pancras Station to St. Paul’s Cathedral taking in some of the historical sites along the way thanks to an audio walking tour. For this attraction, buying our tickets directly from the Cathedral before we left home paid off. There wasn’t anyone in the queues that we went through so other than waiting a couple of seconds for them to print actual tickets for us, we basically walked straight in. Meanwhile the people without tickets were waiting in a fairly...

May 31, 2019 - Interlaken and back to London

Good evening from London, Thursday was a free day. Good news...the sun was finally shining. Yippee!!! After a lovely morning walk, we headed over to catch the funicular up to the Harder Kulm viewpoint. The lineup wasn’t too bad so we were able to get on the 10:40 car. Within 10 minutes, we went from 566 meters/1857 feet to 1,322 meters/4337 feet above sea level and the views were amazing. I have so many beautiful pictures from this excursion, I don’t know how I’m going to pick which ones to include in the journal! For lunch we shared a...

May 28, 2019 - Trip coming to an end

A step closer to home - flying to London this afternoon (Tuesday) and catching Qantas home to Australia, Wednesday midday. We touch down in Perth on Thursday evening and arrive Brisbane in the early hours of Friday morning. The Croats live in a permanent state of “slow motion”, and there is a real relaxed, “no worry” attitude. Everywhere in Croatia, we experienced a leisurely pace, and nothing happens quickly. Can be frustrating as a visitor, but they love their way of life and still live it the traditional way. “Pomalo” is a Croatian word,...

70 Canals 2019

May 15, 2019 - London, England

Good morning from London, After an overnight flight “across the pond“ we arrived in London England on Wednesday morning. We’re spending two nights in London before we meet up with our tour group on Friday. On this trip we’re really looking forward to exploring more of Europe! On Wednesday, the weather in London was sunny and warm. We took the subway from Heathrow to the Piccadilly Circus station, transferred to the Bakerloo line and exited at Lambeth North station. From there it was just a quick walk to our hotel. At home when we go out to...

Apr 28, 2019 - Last day Windsor

Last day in Windsor Cold start - 6 degrees at 9 am. Windsor is such a pretty town, not as touristy and many traditional shops. Today is the London Marathon - unfortunately we didn’t get our entry in time, so were not allowed to run the 45 kms! There were 40,000 competitors. Oldest competitor to complete course was 84 years old taking 6 hours - the winner, a Kenyan took 2 hours. We didn’t see it, but on TV saw novelty costumes of the not so serious runners dressed as a crayon, or London’s Big Ben, trying to enter the Guinness Book of...

Apr 27, 2019 - Explore Windsor

12 hours sleep and feeling well rested. Cold and blustery winds, so out came the winter woollies. Breakfast overlooking the Thames, then walked to shops, and lined up to watch Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle. Hushed anticipation from the crowd as we heard the drum beat approaching in the distance, and soon the Guards rounded the corner - all resplendent in their red uniforms and bear skin hats. A fantastic sight of pageantry. By now, winds almost gale force, and our phone cameras were almost blown from our hands. The Tour of...

70 Canals 2019

Apr 26, 2019 - Arrived London

Boarded A380 to London. So grateful for an upgrade to Business Class. It was a thirteen and half hour flight. Today is our 44th Wedding Anniversary and we woke from 8 hour sleep on the plane to celebrate it over Turkey. The crowds queueing at Heathrow Immigration were horrendous, and again grateful for Fast Track, and on our way to Hotel in Windsor in very short time. Although it was only 8.30 am, our Hotel room was ready and again gave thanks that we could settle in quickly. We tried to stay awake, but had to give in to a few hours...

70 Canals 2019

Mar 26, 2019 - One of those shitty days

It's a darn long trip to Stansted. First getting to Toronto and muck about. Then a nice upgrade to just under business class tricks you into thinking that you can actually fold down the seat to rest - but alas - it's just a little illusion - the little bit of leg room is good but that's about all. Still can't sleep on the planes. And the "filet" steak was carved from a 50 year old bull. Arriving in Heathrow - not much for information but finally found someone to give me directions to National Bus Depot to catch the bus to Stansted. The...

Solo Camino 2019

Mar 2, 2019 - London Trip: March 2-4

I’m not really sure why I wanted to visit London initially. I think partially because everyone does it. Things are kind of weird right now between Ireland and the UK because of Brexit but a lot of people think it will take a long time for anything to really happen. The morning of my flight I really didn’t want to go. I think I was just in a bad mood and was a little worried about traveling alone. I wasn’t spending the entire weekend alone but the flight there and back I had bought just because they were super cheap. I got to London and...
