Oct 5, 2012 - Where does my family come from
After five weeks in London I realised that there was only three weeks until I left the UK for the forseeable future and finally got my butt into gear. I headed to Exeter as some of my family origins are based in Devon and Cornwall which was as good as excuse as any for a road trip around the south-west. I spent at day with the lovely people at the Devon Family History Society Library where they shared their wealth of knowledge about the local area. The next day I got to pick up my little ford focus which would be the gateway to my...

Jul 13, 2012 - Devon
We headed to Devon on Wednesday morning, and found a campsite, Kennford Park at Splatford Split. We got settled in then headed into Exeter by bus intending to visit the famed cathedral. Would you believe it, for the first time in 30 years, they have restricted access due to a flower show for the Queen’s Jubilee! We wandered around the outside in Cathedral Close then around the central city before catching the bus back to camp. [Sue]: I shouldn't have laughed at the name of this place. On walking from the bus I fell "splat" face first;...

Apr 5, 2012 - Killerton House and a little bit of North America
The weather was still not very good so we decided to do another National Trust Estate. This time we visited Killerton House. Killerton was the home of the Aclands, an important Devon family for 350 years and who owned significant parcels of land in the county. The house which was built in 1778-9 as a temporary residence for the then Sir Thomas Aclands, 7th Baronet. He had decided to move the family seat from nearby Columb John to Killerton. He had commissioned a new mansion to be built at the top of Dolbury Hill but due to a fall out with...

Apr 6, 2010 - Tue 6 - To Exeter and back
Let’s go see what’s in Exeter Not much really. As our hosts had explained, Exeter was badly (or perhaps well) bombed during the war and therefore has little of the ancient architecture we have gotten used to seeing. It does have a beautiful cathedral - in fact we wondered just what we can expect to see when we get to Europe to see some of the great cathedrals. An interesting fact (I thought) shared by our hosts was that a city in England is defined by whether it has a cathedral not as you might expect the number of folk who live within its...

Aug 10, 2007 - Rollercoasters and log flues
As the sun was shining we decided to go to Crealey for the day. Sam had a ball on the roller coasters, we had a good soaking on the log flume and the indoor play area was amazing. Sam managed to disappear for 20minutes at a time inside the play area. Josh saw his first piglet which was very exciting and got to play in the soft play area which he enjoyed.
