Oct 2, 2012 - Canterbury and the white cliffs of Dover

When I first arrived in London back in May, my friend Monika and I were going to go away for the night however it never eventuated. Now that I'm close to leaving the UK, we finally decided on a day trip. Much to my disgust, she made me be at her place at 7am so that we would miss the London traffic. I can't complain, this put us in Canterbury by 9am where we found this gorgeous little cafe to have breakfast. Stomachs full, we embarked on exploring this famous cathedral town. What can I say, this place is steeped in history. We kept stoping...

Finding Cheryl 2012

Oct 1, 2011 - Cantebury Cathedral

Well this now 88F weather is playing havoc with my wardrobe. One pair of short sox to wear in my runners and the same pair of Capri pants that I had to wear yesterday. This is going to be like this for the next 3 days. I hope everyone has a low tolerance to high smells if you know what I mean. We spent the afternoon in Canterbury. What a busy place on a Saturday. At least I think today is Saturday as it seems that I have lost all track of time. Canterbury Cathedral in is one of the oldest and most famous structures in England and forms part...

Jul 12, 2011 - Canterbury Tales

Hi Everyone Our motorhome is now ready for the Continent. The air conditioner is working well and Paul is getting the hang of finding the satellite above us so we can get a TV signal. (100’s of channels but as usual not much worth watching except the re-runs!) We have also sold our little car. We were sad to see it go but we couldn’t leave it outside Mum & Dad’s for so long. We said goodbye to Mum, Brian & Andrew. We had a tasty meal at a Chinese restaurant in Pangborne and then popped along the road to Andrew’s cottage for a cuppa. His...

Apr 10, 2011 - Kent - Day 2

Today we had the most amazing day in the county of Kent with our friends Paul and Susie. They picked us up at 9am and we headed to Canterbury, home of the Anglican Canterbury Cathedral! We walked around the village and admired the Medieval English architecture. Then we headed into the cathedral grounds and I say grounds as it took about 2 hours to go through the entire complex and inside. After the cathedral, we had a traditional roast dinner lunch in the pub. We then took a tour on the river punt and learnt alot of Canterbury's amazing...

My Europe Adventure

Oct 27, 2010 - Canterbury Cathedral & Smallhythe

Today we drive to Canterbury for the Cathedral. Quite a drive, there and back. Doesn't seem so far on the map, but lots of small towns and parked cars on the side of the road. Park and Ride was the way to go. Great time, and to finish the day we went to Smallhythe Place the home of Ellen Terrey. A very accomplished actress, later a Dame. The house must have no foundations, as the floors were very uneven. Garden was lovely....an English cottage garden.

Feb 13, 2010 - Weekend exploring in Kent

After a good first week at work the weekend is now upon me. It is the first proper weekend I have had in the months of being unemployed. Maidstone may take you as a small community and rightly so as I have already bumped into a workmate at the supermarket- I wasn't there for more than 10 mins. However it is contrasted by a busy town center- people were knocking into me all over the show, cars always fill up the narrow roads and there is an abundance of motorways through the city. It is funny that it almost takes the same time to walk as it...

Sep 9, 2008 - Cathedrals and castles

We lucked out this morning with the weather. When we got to Canterbury, the sun was shining and I had to remove some layers as I was expecting a bit less sun. Canterbury is adorable! There is a huge pedestrian shopping area that has lots of fabulous shops I avoided. The buildings are a perfect blend of old and new. We stopped at Starbucks to get a dose of caffeine before continuing on to where we thought there was a castle that we had spotted on the drive in. It turns out the only thing left is the wall. A little further along the wall...

May 3, 2008 - Canterbury - 1st stop

Another gorgeous weekend was in store so we jumped on the bus to Canterbury. We are touring places via word of mouth and the Cathedral was a popular destination. We saw the spires coming into town and made our way via closed off streets with restaurants, pubs, shops and museums. We ducked into the Eastbridge Hospital of St. Thomas the Martyr, and were surprised that it wasn’t a hospital at all but a late 11th century hospitality inn. Latin word hospes: meaning to host a guest or stranger. It is still in use today accommodating a few elderly...

May 10, 2007 - Kent and Canterbury

Today, the Nash's and Millington's took a drive over to Canterbury to see what was there. After a very nice drive, we arrive in Canterbury to find a very large cathedral and a very small town. The tour of the cathedral was very good--remember Thomas Becket--he was murdered here by men who support the King of England. After the tour and lunch we decided to head back toward Woking with a stop at Sussingkind Gardens and Castle. We arrived at the Gardens and they were not open. So after a short walk around in the breezy 40-50 degree weather is...

Oct 6, 2006 - Canterbury

Back in UK, sitting in a campground in Canterbury. No change in the weather, just as miserable as last week in France, but that was to be expected! About to head into town & post a for sale advertisement for Gippy - fingers crossed now! Time to play the waiting game...

Mar 6, 2006 - kent

Took another British side trip to see my mate from my South African Expedition. Since I was so ill when she came to see me in Mozambique, I thought I best do a visit when I am ready for anything!! Kirsty: another full of life, do anything at any moment, yet incredibly spiritual woman; is always a treat to be around. Could not come to England and not pay a visit. Makes me laugh and cry all at the same time. She has a talent that's for sure. She has this accent one could depict miles and miles away. One of kind. A diamond in the rough. (you...

Jul 23, 2005 - canterbury pilgrims

rebecca and i decided to go on a pilgrimage to the canterbury cathedral. unlike the medieval pilgrims, we have trains, the tube, buses and cabs to assist us. we took the train in from cambridge to london, king's cross station. check out my photo of platform 9 3/4. we took the tube from king's cross station to victoria station, but while we were in route a "code amber" was issued and we were evacuated off the tube by police. it was a pretty orderly exit, with the police helping us off and directing us up through the station. some londoners,...
