Feb 11, 2015 - Out of the comfort zone

Today we did a desert Safari with Arabian adventures and what an adventure it was. Drove for some 40 minutes out to the desert passing camel farms on the way. Did you know camel milk has more protein than cow milk and no fats? We also passed a camel racing track which apparently is big here. Interesting fact, only female camels are used for racing as they are faster. The dune ride was just a blast with your tummy doing a few flips. When he drove over a ridge of sand,it almost looked like he was going to drive us over a cliff edge. The sand...

Feb 11, 2015 - Wow factor continues

Last night was a night I shall never forget. We went to the base of the Burj Khalifa. Such a remarkable building. Not only is it the worlds tallest but it sets a record for worlds fastest elevator and worlds highest residential complex. It took 7,500 workers to build it. We had an Italian meal in this very fancy restaurant overlooking the fountains at the base of the Burj. The meal was incredibly good, everything so fresh, melt in your mouth pasta and an ambience of class. The fountain show is beyond description with 6,600 lights and 50...

Feb 11, 2015 - Big bus tour

I have been busy, hence, the delay in entries. For 2 days we did the Hop on Hop off Big Bus tour. Well worth it as I saw more of the city such as the museum, old town Dubai and along the creek. I learned that mosques are located every 500 meters so you can imagine how many mosques there are; we were told 500 which I would think is within the city limits. Religion plays a big role in this culture. This city has lanes and lanes of road and the traffic to go with it. Medians are beautifully landscaped with palm trees and petunias. When I glance...

Feb 7, 2015 - What day is this?

Today is gonna be a relax day at the pool. Yesterday was more excitement as the race ended at the Burj, a most impressive place to end a professional race. Mark Cavendish won both the stage and the overall classification as his team lead him in perfect form. Dubai mall is at the base of the Burj and it was very busy. I enjoyed the people watching seeing women fully veiled and men in their flowing robes. Penny informed me the reason the men's headscarves are different colors is to indicate the area the man is from. In typical Dubai fashion...

Jan 17, 2015 - The Amazing Dubai

Off to Dubai .. a long day for sure. After a late leaving 1:30 flight to Seattle we have just enough time for a wine and a snack before getting on our Emirates flight to Dubai… 14 ½ hrs. Way too long especially with 2 kids that took turns crying and screaming through-out the night. Needless to say thank goodness for lots of movie selections as we didn’t get much sleep. We arrive just around 8 pm or 8 am our time so it will be well over 24 hrs before we get to bed. The airport is fabulous but we do have a bit of an adventure..or should we...

Sep 10, 2014 - Dubai

We arrived in Dubai for a 2 night stop over & went to The Arabian Courtyard Hotel in an area dubbed little Mumbai. Hot & steamy, it was my first time to Dubai & I really didn't have a concept of what to expect. For me it was an interesting mix of old Arabic culture juxtaposed with 'no expense spared' modernism. With no tax to pay, Dubai attracts business & investment & presents as a very rich city indeed. From our hotel window we looked out to the old world Dubai museum backed by a mosque with the requisite 'prayer call' every so often &...

Sep 6, 2014 - Dubai

I loved Dubai but what I didn't love about Dubai was the heat. I think that you should go there and go on the safari tour and over the sand dunes, see the falcon and go on the camels. And get lots of henna tattoos. Hope you have fun when you come here.

Sep 6, 2014 - Dubai

It is very hot. It has a lot of water features. We saw a few aquariums. I loved it apart from the heat. It was a lot of fun, especially the water park. There was a desert safari with falcon show, dune safari, camel riding, belly dancing and henna tattoos. The only reason I liked the heat was that I had a excuse to go to the hotel pool and have an icy pole. I would recommend going.

Sep 5, 2014 - Dubai

Dubai airport is amazing and I'll never get used to the train trip from arrivals to departures it just doesn't feel like you're going too the right place! Such a variety of faces and languages all in one almost overwhelming area but fun to watch and the blueberry muffin and coffee were yummy. Change of planes and travelling companions - a mum and her restless young son initially but they swapped before takeoff with a very friendly and easy going Aussie couple from Carnegie doing their own grand tour. She's a Senior Sargent in the police...

Aug 23, 2014 - Day 4 - around town before leaving Dubai

Our last day in Dubai...thank goodness i have to say. its not my kind of town. pleased I've visited it however cant imagine i'll be back unless except passing through. It's too hot, too commercial, too much shopping...not my kind of a holiday. We had an early breakfast at Marina before heading home and packing our bags. Our flight doesn't leave until just after midnight so we are dropping our bags off at the airport until it's time to leave. We caught the metro to airport to drop off the bags and headed back into the city. Today we are...

Aug 22, 2014 - Day 3 - Dubai

We got up early, showered and headed out with the intention of catching the Metro into Dubai city centre. well that idea came unstuck pretty quickly. the trains don't start running until 1pm on a Friday as it's a holy day. Wouldn't have thought of that. What to do now...there's no little shops or cafes around here that we can sit and kill time at. Even though the malls don't open until 10 (not sure how the rules work here - malls can open at 10, trains can't run until 1pm) I though we could catch a taxi to the Mall of the Emirates and hope...

May 19, 2014 - Jewels in the Arabian Desert

The kids spent some time at the "compound" pool on Saturday morning. The compound has 500 houses, three entrance gates, each guarded, and its own chemist, drycleaner and Four Square. This, along with a live-in maid is the way almost all ex-pats live in the Emirates. I could definitely do with a "Shirley" - she is amazing! Instead of more pool time, Hinemarie convinced me to join her for a Les Mills Body Attack class at her gym after five weeks of no intense exercise. It was, unsurprisingly, nothing short of horrendous...not helped by the...
