Jun 9, 2015 - Dubai

Wednesday: Homeward bound ………………………. The day dawned bright and sunny for our last day in London. The early morning was spent packing, checking flights, printing boarding passes, etc. Luggage was left with the hotel and then we walked up to the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. There we discovered that more than half of the rooms were closed due to industrial action but this was actually helpful as it allowed us to see those that were open in a couple of hours. We focused on major artists and works and saw some of the best of the likes...

May 27, 2015 - Dubai stopover

Dubai Well Dubai was an interesting place! Coming into land over the desert, I just wanted to get out and explore! Sort of a generation kill urge to drive theology the stinking got desert. 37 degrees and really warm. The airport has hundreds of planes and many of them are Emirates. The fleet owned by Emirates is amazing! On arrival I slipped into the men room because the one on the flight was very similar to those portal oops at most rock concerts. Remind me to burn these shoes! The first cubicle in the men's room was a lovely ceramic...

Apr 13, 2015 - Dubai

Sunday 12th What a change after Iran! It's like being on another planet! The excesses of one and the of lack of development of the other 41 degrees! Thankfully everything from the hotel to the subway, covered walkways and malls are airconditioned. Went to Dubai Mall which is not just a shopping extravaganza which makes Westfield look like a mini market but has an aquarium, huge waterfall and an ice skating rink. Outside is a "lake" which has an amazing water fountain display, set to music every half hour. It's in front of the worlds tallest...

Mar 31, 2015 - Dubai

Another impulse buy...when we purchased our plane tickets to Katie in Qatar, we noticed that Dubai was so close and flights so cheap....so here we are for two days. That's all we could afford! Our airbnb was so close to the action, so close to the heart of downtown that I could actually see the lighted fountain show in front of the Burj Khalifa from my window! How decadent is that! The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world (over 860 meters), and after hearing the Walkers' stories about sketchy workmanship in Qatar, we were...

Feb 18, 2015 - Day 3 - Guess what.. still hot

So Day 3 was another busy day. We began early doors with a coach trip through Downtown Dubai on our way to the Al Arab Hotel, the first 7 star hotel in the world. We were even lucky enough to see a guest land their private helicopter on the roof. The reason we we're in the area was the main attraction of the day was the Wild Wadi Waterpark, the largest and oldest in Dubai. The kids had a the day to experience the rides and enjoy the weather whilst the staff followed them around with the suncream. I am pretty certain we have avoided any...

Feb 18, 2015 - Is it really time to go home?

Really time does fly when one is having fun and my time in Dubai has flown by. As I prepare to pack my suitcase I think about my impressions of Dubai. The fresh smell of the warm air. The giant billboards covering a high rise. How clean the city is and how safe one feels given the lack of crime. I saw bikes unlocked, women leave their purses hanging off a shopping cart and a person leaving a cell phone on a store counter while looking at merchandise. Remarkable for a large city. I observe how people have regard for each other and are...

Feb 17, 2015 - Wow! Wow! Wow!

Yesterday was so unbelievably over the top, hard to describe so you understand the magnificence of my experience. We went to high tea at Sahn Eddar in the Burj Al-Arab Hotel. It is self proclaimed as the only 7 star hotel in the world and I can't imagine anyone disputing this claim. It is the third largest hotel in the world with 2002 rooms,60 floors and 18 elevators. It was constructed in 1994 and completed in 1999 at a cost of 650 million U.S. dollars. It stands on a artificial island connected to Jemeriah Beach by a private curving...

Feb 16, 2015 - Beaching it

Yesterday was a pampering, relaxing day at the beach. In Dubai, one uses a beach club and we chose Riva Beach club located on the Palm Shoreline. Absolutely stunning. For a fee one can occupy the beach and swimming pools as well as use the change room. We were given big fluffy towels and several glossy magazines before we headed to the beach to find just the right location for our lounge chairs. Wonderful white sand, not too hot to walk on. The water was cool but refreshing. I enjoyed the saltiness of it too. In true princess style we were...

Feb 15, 2015 - Adventures in shopping

On Saturday Penny took me to the fish market which also included produce. Not a tourist in sight, this is very much a local activity. Yeah, it smells like fish and the array of fish is unreal from giant squid to tuna, salmon, baby sharks, bass, prawns of all sizes and many fish I could not identify. To add to the atmosphere is the noise of people bartering and merchants constantly approaching you to buy their fish. Samples of produce were offered to us and I enjoyed dates from Saudi which are not as sweet as what we get at home. We also went...
