Mar 26, 2016 - We and Lee Makes Three

Saturday before our flight to Mauritius and Al won't give up on trying to see the camel races. He decides to rent a small car for the day instead of exploring the Deira side of the creek today. Lee and I go along with the plan even though the Google website and the hotel front desk said no races. What do they know anyway? The racetrack website still indicates the event is on until the end of the month. It is after all our last chance to see them before the season ends. Al knows the drive as we have done it in reverse once before. No problem...

Mar 26, 2016 - Dubai Sights II

So, why did we go to Dubai ? Well, on a flight from Australia to New Zealand saw an advertisement in the airline magazine for a cruise; in fact a couple cruises. The 1st was a week long around areas of the Arabian Peninsula. The 2nd re-visited a couple of the same ports, but then continued up the Red Sea to Jordan, thru the Suez Canal, on to Crete, Peloponnesian Peninsula, and ending in Venice. Sounded like an opportunity to visit some places we might otherwise not have. The two cruises were on the same ship, The Musica, and so we would not...

Mar 25, 2016 - Dubai

Al and I drove to Dubai two days before our flight left for Mauritius. Spring break is two weeks long. Lee is meeting us in Dubai and traveling to Mauritius as well. Arriving too early to check in to our hotel close to the airport, we left our bags and walked to the metro station near the hotel. We quickly learned the ropes of taking the metro to get from our hotel to the Deira area of Dubai. Being Friday, the streets were bare and the shops closed. Looking across the creek we noticed the Bur Dubai was a little more lively. An Abra took us...

Mar 22, 2016 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates

No, it did not take four and a half months to travel from Bangkok to Dubai. It has just taken me that long to make this entry. Long story, but here's the Cliff Notes version. Internet connections were less than good in the Middle East, and on the cruise that followed (actually horrible on the cruise), and upon return to Austin had to spend 3+ months working every day on a rental property - that's my story and I'm sticking to it ! So, back to the journey - as best as I can recall it ! I will continue to date the entries with the dates when...

Mar 19, 2016 - Camel Races-Can It Be?

Last week we had reliable information about the big camel race event on from March 19-31. It is the finals for the season so we wanted to be sure to attend. Al and I have been unsuccessfully trying to see an actual camel race. All we've managed is to see warm up or training sessions at the track. Once on a road trip south, the camel races were on in the distance as we passed a local race track so technically we did see them from afar. We have also seen them on TV but it is just not the same. Today we felt very lucky to also have Elaine,...

Mar 18, 2016 - Exploring More of Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi top ten cultural attractions mentions the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri which lies between two bridges and across the canal from the Grand Mosque. It is described as a fusion of age-old Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme, as romantic canals and lush gardens snake their way through the souk connecting two hotels. It is an expensive area with not much culture that we could see. It got us out of the house. The attempt at making it look somewhat like Venice was there in a small way. Small boats moved customers of the hotels from...

Mar 12, 2016 - Camel Crazy for Crazy Camels

Saturday became a search for camels. The drive from Abu Dhabi took us through the back roads to the Dubai Camel Race Track. With no plan in place Al likes to head out to see what unfolds. I have to admit the day unfolded perfectly finding camels on and off the racetrack. First stop was to admire camels from afar just in case these were the only ones we would see. Some sort of fence kept them off the road. There were adults and babies in the distance. Al and I waited in the car. The drive was pleasant and the sand in this are was very light...

Feb 19, 2016 - Dubai Yoga Weekend

Weekend plans to Dubai were paused to allow the heavy fog to lift before we ventured onto the highway. We had planned to depart at 5:45am to make it for the main event which began at 8am. Check in was at 7am.The fog kept us home until about 7:30 am when Al decided it was now light and the risk was less. I thought it was way to foggy just because the drivers here are crazy. Once on the road it is very difficult to turn around so on we drove slowly with numerous people whizzing by us without lights no less! Al stuck it out in the truck lane...

Jan 28, 2016 - Dubai and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Barry was very happy about flying Emirates from Amman, Jordan, to the small city state of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on the Persian Gulf. Not knowing that first class was offered on this short, two and half hour flight, he had booked business class. Our seats were very comfortable, indeed, and there were very few people in our cabin. First class had curtained cubicles and who knows who occupied them. Originally, we were scheduled to stay at the Address Downtown hotel, but a fire burned down the 67 story building and we were subsequently...

Jan 19, 2016 - Stop Over in Dubai

This will be short since my battery is almost dead. I got a four seat row to myself so instead of doing all the things I had planned, watch movies, do puzzles and read, I just rested. So I have managed to feel pretty well during the day. After figuring out how to use the metro to get to my hotel, I went out to see the city of Dubai. It seems like a very modern city. Not tons of the charm that comes with age. While it has been here quite awhile, the growth has been pretty explosive. There are lots of accommodation for women. Women only lines...

Dec 11, 2015 - Burj Khalifa, Dubaim

Al's birthday gift was a trip to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The tickets included taking us up to the 124th floor of the building with 160 floors. The Burj Khalifa is 2,716 feet 6 inches and the tallest building in the world. A drive to Dubai had us leaving home at about 8am to make sure we had plenty of time to find the entrance from inside the Dubai Mall. Good signage in the mall had us there in plenty of time to browse the history of how the Burj Khalifa was built. Being loaded into an elevator was a little worrisome as we expected our...

An apparently cool day in Dubai- 32 degrees. Lots of swimming at the hotel including a night swim! Premier Inn is same as at home minus Lenny Henry and porkbacon. Theo loved the tallest building in the world and the most amazing mall- massive aquarium, ice rink and very cool shops. Off to Wild Wadi's tomorrow! Xxxxx
