Oct 14, 2016 - Dubai

Just when we thought all was going smoothly... Jenny got wanded, swabbed and dogged at Auckland Airport Security. Apparantly the machine found traces of explosives on the bag. Fortunately it didn't happen here - Lisa just got beeped and had to go through scanner again. The bomb dog was a handsome German Shorthaired Pointer who was completely disinterested. Excellent flight, spare seat beside so we were able to spread out. Gate has just opened for flight to Casablanca so the next leg begins.

Aug 14, 2016 - Dubai

We decided to do the hop on hop off 24 hour bus tour of Dubai , this was such a good way to see all the hotspots and by the end of the day we were best friends with the organisers .it was 44 deg but we were able to sit on the top floor in an air conditioned area for most of the trip. This place is so organised , they are planning and building for the 2020 Expo which is being held there . Everything is very fancy , the big new malls have all the best shops - we wish we had done a trip to Old Dubai as when we went through there it looked...

Aug 13, 2016 - Dubai

The captain on the Emirates plane told us that the flight was the longest long haul flight in the world . We were fine although I think the service on AIrNZ is much better. We arrived at 5am 30 mins early and managed to take a wrong turn to the baggage collection .and ended up walking for miles . John with his dodgy hip , it wasn't fun for him . Eventually got back on the right track and a man in a golf buggy gave us a lift to get our bags . The 37 degree heat hit us when we came out of the airport , so humid . This place has so many tall...

Aug 6, 2016 - Hot, Hot, Hot

We awoke in an the enormous apartment before the sun so we could step outside onto the balcony. A fine thing because as soon as dawn broke, there was no going back out in that oven. A thin layer of sand or dust was on every surface out there. Although we were somewhat on the beach, there was construction going on somewhat ubiquitously. After much ado attempting the access to the beach, we finally sorted it. The water was extremely warm, and this is about 7 am. This beach is probably not the best the Persian Gulf can offer, I am sure. The...

Shortest trip to UAE

Aug 5, 2016 - 55 the hot way

Having just flown through Dubai on the return from Philadelphia, it was mere days before we were to return. This despite the conference that was to happen right after we got back from the weekend dash to Dubai. Motivation: Scott had promised to visit his customers there and perhaps partly to validate the decision not to accept an offer there...? After doing a few rounds with the car rental company, we enjoyed some marital challenges trying to navigate with a first gen, or rather no gen GPS which was perennially lost, and finally managed to...

Apr 27, 2016 - Up, Up, Up

Before we start the day we determine if we can extend our stay at the hotel for one more night as we feel rushed for time. The answer is yes, and we get the same deal. Al has been emailed to pick us up tomorrow instead of today. Sharon and I managed to extend our Big Bus 2 day ticket by a few hours to have just enough time to use this transport to get to the Dubai Mall where entry to the Burj Khalifa begins. I've been up once before but Sharon is anxiously waiting to see it. When we arrive at the mall we have lots of time before we enter so...

Apr 26, 2016 - Big Bus Dubai

Sharon and I began early once again, catching the Big Bus for the first trip out from Marina Mall. It takes a while for us to get to Bur Dubai on the red route. Once there I decide to get off by the Museum. We walk a little towards the arts area but Sharon decides that her time would be better spent at the museum and market area so off we go to the museum. This one is a small one set up beautifully with historic ways of life. Each room is set up as if the Bedouin people were living there. It shows the clever chimneys built to catch the...

Apr 25, 2016 - Dubai

Today is day one of the Dubai Big Bus tour. Walking from our hotel to the Marina Mall is a pleasant walk where we pick up breakfast on the way. The Big Bus departs just outside the front entrance to the mall. We catch the first bus of the day to take advantage of the time we have in Dubai. Each of the three routes on the Big Bus is colour coded. The red route which takes in the city tour, the green route which takes in the beach areas and the blue route which is the marina tour and where we are based. The best use of our time today will be...

Apr 25, 2016 - Op pad in Dubai

No thank you”.
